Data from: Species delimitation and phylogeny in the genus Nasutitermes (Termitidae: Nasutitermitinae) in French Guiana

Virginie Roy, Reginaldo Constantino, Vincent Chassany, Stephanie Giusti-Miller, Michel Diouf, Philippe Mora & Myriam Harry
Species delimitation and identification can be arduous for taxa whose morphologic characters are easily confused, which can hamper global biodiversity assessments and pest species management. Exploratory methods of species delimitation that use DNA sequence as their primary information source to establish group membership and estimate putative species boundaries are useful approaches, complementary to traditional taxonomy. Termites of the genus Nasutitermes make interesting models for the application of such methods. They are dominant in Neotropical primary...

Analyses on the fungus-farming termite, Macrotermes natalensis

Kings and queens of eusocial termites can live for decades, while queens sustain a nearly maximal fertility. To investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying their long lifespan, we carried out transcriptomics, lipidomics and metabolomics in Macrotermes natalensis on sterile short-lived workers, long-lived kings and five stages spanning twenty years of adult queen maturation. Reproductives share gene expression differences from workers in agreement with a reduction of several aging-related processes, involving upregulation of DNA damage repair and...

Informal employment in the Kabylia region (Algeria): labour force segmentation, mobility and earnings

Youghourta Bellache, Omar Babou, Oksana Nezhyvenko & Philippe Adair
A pooled sample of 3,290 Algerian workers from two regional household surveys captures the determinants of access to the formal vs. informal labour market segments. Youth, female gender and low educational attainment drive informal employment. Segmentation does not preclude occupational mobility, rather towards formal segments. Earnings functions on a sub-sample of 1,753 of formal and informal employees highlight an average 25 per cent wage gap, being lower among women, whereas gender pay gap is lower...

Data from: Asexual queen succession in the higher termite Embiratermes neotenicus

Romain Fougeyrollas, Klára Dolejšová, David Sillam-Dussès, Virginie Roy, Chantal Poteaux, Robert Hanus & Yves Roisin
Asexual queen succession (AQS), in which workers, soldiers and dispersing reproductives are produced sexually while numerous non-dispersing queens arise through thelytokous parthenogenesis, has recently been described in three species of lower termites of the genus Reticulitermes. Here, we show that AQS is not an oddity restricted to a single genus of lower termites, but a more widespread strategy occurring also in the most advanced termite group, the higher termites (Termitidae). We analysed the genetic structure...

La retraite : un évènement protecteur pour la santé de tous (LIEPP Policy Brief, n°59)

Thomas Barnay & Eric Defebvre

Margaret Josion-Portail, Abdelmajid Amine & Audrey Bonnemaizon

FragSAD: A database of diversity and species abundance distributions from habitat fragments

Habitat destruction is the single greatest anthropogenic threat to biodiversity. Decades of research on this issue have led to the accumulation of hundreds of data sets comparing species assemblages in larger, intact, habitats to smaller, more fragmented, habitats. Despite this, little synthesis or consensus has been achieved, primarily because of non‐standardized sampling methodology and analyses of notoriously scale‐dependent response variables (i.e., species richness). To be able to compare and contrast the results of habitat fragmentation...
