Spatial distribution and ecological risk of heavy metal in surface sediment of Old Brahmaputra River, Bangladesh
Md. Sirajul Islam, Rifat Shahid Shammi, Rahiatul Jannat, Md. Humayun Kabir & Md. Saiful Islam
The study was conducted to investigate the concentrations, distributions, sources, and potential ecological risk of heavy metals in surface sediments from the Old Brahmaputra River. Sediment samples were collected from five sampling stations and analyzed with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). The results showed that mean concentrations (mg/kg) of heavy metals were in order of Ni (58.82) > Cr (32.45) > Pb (21.04) > Cu (14.24) > Cd (3.81) > As (2.02). Element-specific...

This work aimed to determine the level of some toxic elements (As, Cr, Cd, and Pb) in the water of the Rupsha River, Bangladesh, concerning their potential dangers to human exposure. The elemental concentrations (mg/L) were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrometer and found to decrease in the order of Cr (0.041) > Pb (0.029) > As (0.004) > Cd (0.002). The level of elements in this river water surpasses various international limits, making it unfit...

A transcriptomic catalog of Tenualosa ilisha (Hilsa shad), constructed by assembling RNA-Seq reads generated in the next generation sequencing (NGS) platform from different tissues including brain, gill, kidney, liver, and muscle collected from different aquatic habitats (fresh, brackish, and sea waters). De novo assembly of the sequences obtained from 46 cDNA libraries revealed 462,085 transcript isoforms that were subsequently annotated using the Universal Protein Resource Knowledgebase (UniPortKB) as a reference.

Data from: Devario in Bangladesh: species diversity, sibling species, and introgression within danionin cyprinids (Teleostei: Cyprinidae: Danioninae)
Sven O. Kullander, , Michael Norén & Abdur Rob Mollah
Four species of Devario are recorded from Bangladesh: D. aequipinnatus, D. anomalus, D. coxi, new species, and D. devario. Devario aequipinnatus has a wide distribution in northern India and Bangladesh. Devario coxi, from southeastern Bangladesh near Cox's Bazar, differs from D. aequipinnatus in mtDNA (COI, p-distance 1.8%), colouration, proportional measurements, and meristics. The minor morphological differences and low frequency of overlapping meristics suggest relatively recent separation of D. coxi from other D. aequipinnatus. Devario anomalus...
Pathogenicity and virulence of Marburg virus

Marburg virus (MARV) has been a major concern since 1967, with two major outbreaks occurring in 1998 and 2004. Infection from MARV results in severe hemorrhagic fever, causing organ dysfunction and death. Exposure to fruit bats in caves and mines, and human-to-human transmission had major roles in the amplification of MARV outbreaks in African countries. The high fatality rate of up to 90% demands the broad study of MARV diseases (MVD) that correspond with MARV...

Qualitative research in suicidology: a systematic review of the literature of low-and middle-income countries
Humayun Kabir, Sarah Wayland & Myfanwy Maple
Abstract Background Suicide is more prevalent among disadvantaged, discriminated, and marginalised people with the majority of global suicide deaths occurring in the low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). This can be attributed to sociocultural contexts and exacerbated by access to limited resources and services that can assist with early identification, treatment, and support. Accurate information on the personal experiences of suicide is lacking, as many LMICs legislate that suicide is illegal. Methods This study aims to review...

Immunoglobulins content in colostrum, transitional and mature milk of Bangladeshi mothers: influence of parity and sociodemographic characteristics
Hashemi Akhter, Farina Aziz, Fahim Rahmat Ullah, Monira Ahsan & Sheikh Nazrul Islam
Background.
The study investigated the concentration of IgA, IgM and IgG in colostrum, transitional and mature milk and the effect of parity, age, BMI and family income on secreted immunoglobulin contents of human milk.
Methods.
Sequential samples of colostrum, transitional and mature milk were collected from 38 women. Enzymelinked immunosorbent assay was used to analyse the immunoglobulin concentrations.
Results.
The study revealed that IgA was the dominant immunoglobulin and mean concentration in colostrum, transitional and...
The role of trust and habit in the adoption of mHealth by older adults in Hong Kong: a healthcare technology service acceptance (HTSA) model
Justina Yat Wa Liu, Golam Sorwar, Mohammed Sajedur Rahman & Md Rakibul Hoque
Abstract Background Evidence from the literature suggests that mobile health (mHealth) services can potentially improve healthcare outcomes among older adults. Hence, the government of Hong Kong has recently taken several community and information technology (IT) services initiatives to train older adults on how to enhance their abilities and interest in using mHealth technology. Although mHealth services have been widely implemented globally, their adoption and use by older adults are very low, including those in Hong...

Effect of Thermal Radiation on Biomagnetic Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer over an Unsteady Stretching Sheet
Md. Jahangir ALAM, Md. Ghulam MURTAZA, Efstratios E. TZIRTZILAKIS & Mohammad FERDOWS
This study examines the influence of thermal radiation on biomagnetic fluid, namely blood that passes through a two-dimensional stretching sheet in the presence of magnetic dipole. This analysis is conducted to observe the behavior of blood flow for an unsteady case, which will help in developing new solutions to treat diseases and disorders related to human body. Our model is namely biomagnetic fluid dynamics (BFD), which is consistent with two principles: ferrohydrodynamic (FHD) and magnetohydrodynamic...
DNA-based assessment of environmental degradation in an unknown fauna: the freshwater macroinvertebrates of the Indo-Burmese hotspot
, Alfred Burian, Thomas Creedy & Alfried Vogler
New methods are required for biomonitoring of poorly known tropical ecosystems, but biological assessments of environmental status are limited by insufficient information on taxonomy, composition, and ecology of local communities. The current work applies DNA-based assessment to establish the impact of various types of anthropogenic disturbances on the freshwater macroinvertebrates in an understudied biodiversity hotspot in South Asia, an area that attracts increasing attention for the loss of aquatic ecosystems. We sampled 16 river systems...
