Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use, knowledge, and behaviors around their use and misuse in Irish collegiate student-athletes

Siobhán O’Connor, Noel McCaffrey, Enda Whyte, Kieran Moran & Peter Lacey
Objectives: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly used by athletes to treat injuries but are also reportedly misused as performance or recovery aids. This study aimed to investigate NSAID use, knowledge, and behavior regarding use and misuse of NSAIDs in Irish student-athletes. Methods: One hundred and forty-nine (21.2 ± 3.5 years) student-athletes completed an anonymous questionnaire online. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the data. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were utilized to examine whether...

Elucidating differential nano-bio interactions of multi-walled andsingle-walled carbon nanotubes using subcellular proteomics

Joseph D. T. Ndika, Jukka Sund, Harri Alenius & Anne Puustinen
Understanding the relationship between adverse exposure events and specific material properties will facilitate predictive classification of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) according to their mechanisms of action, and a safe-by-design approach for the next generation of CNTs. Mass-spectrometry-based proteomics is a reliable tool to uncover the molecular dynamics of hazardous exposures, yet challenges persist with regards to its limited dynamic range when sampling whole organisms, tissues or cell lysates. Here, the simplicity of the sub-cellular proteome was...

High-luminance perovskite light-emitting diodes with high-polarity alcohol solvent treating PEDOT:PSS as hole transport layer

Mengge Wu, Dan Zhao, Zijun Wang & Junsheng Yu
Abstract Background Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) are fabricated with a structure of indium tin oxide (ITO)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS)/CH3NH3PbBr3 (MAPbBr3)/1,3,5-tris(2-N-phenylbenzimidazolyl) benzene (TPBi)/Ag. PEDOT:PSS films treated with alcohols including methanol, ethanol, and isopropanol are used to realize high-performance PeLEDs. Among them, by using PEDOT:PSS film treated by methanol as the hole transport layer, the PeLED with a maximum luminance of 2075 cd m−2 and a maximum current efficiency of 0.38 cd A−1 is achieved. Meanwhile, the result...

Koreans and Germans: Cultural Differences in Hand Movement Behaviour and Gestural Repertoire

Zi Hyun Kim & Hedda Lausberg
The present study compares hand movement behaviour and gestural repertoire between the Korean and German participants. Video clips of the hand movement behaviour of participants during description of their appreciation of dance stimuli were analysed with NEUROGES system. The German participants in general executed significantly more gestures than the Koreans. Concerning gesture repertoire, however, the Germans showed more emotional and emphasising gesture, and gesture presenting motion quality, while the Koreans displayed more pointing and pantomiming...

Intergenerational Transmission of Gender Attitudes: Evidence from India

Diva Dhar, Tarun Jain & Seema Jayachandran
This paper examines the intergenerational transmission of gender attitudes in India, a setting with severe discrimination against women and girls. We use survey data on gender attitudes (specifically, about the appropriate roles and rights of women and girls) collected from nearly 5500 adolescents attending 314 schools in the state of Haryana, and their parents. We find that when a parent holds a more discriminatory attitude, his or her child is about 11 percentage points more...

The Effect of a Workfare Programme on Psychological Wellbeing in India

Magda Tsaneva, MAGDA TSANEVA, Uttara Balakrishnan & UTTARA BALAKRISHNAN
Little is known about the effect of poverty alleviation programmes on mental health. In this paper we use variation in district implementation dates and location of residence to examine the short-run effect of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in India on psychological wellbeing. We find that in the first year of the programme, women in recipient districts were less likely to experience depression symptoms. The effects of the programme on men’s mental health, on...
