Global compilation of benthic data sets I, supplement to: Seiter, Katherina; Hensen, Christian; Schröter, Jürgen; Zabel, Matthias (2004): Organic carbon content in surface sediments-defining regional provinces. Deep Sea Research Part I: Oceanographic Research Papers, 51(12), 2001-2026

Katherina Seiter, Christian Hensen, Jürgen Schröter & Matthias Zabel
Approaches to quantify the organic carbon accumulation on a global scale generally do not consider the small-scale variability of sedimentary and oceanographic boundary conditions along continental margins. In this study, we present a new approach to regionalize the total organic carbon (TOC) content in surface sediments (<5 cm sediment depth). It is based on a compilation of more than 5500 single measurements from various sources. Global TOC distribution was determined by the application of a...

Sedimentology of surface samples from the Weddell Sea, Antarctica, supplement to: Diekmann, Bernhard; Kuhn, Gerhard (1999): Provenance and dispersal of glacial-marine surface sediments in the Weddell Sea and adjoining areas, Antarctica: ice-rafting versus current transport. Marine Geology, 158(1-4), 209-231

Bernhard Diekmann & Gerhard Kuhn
Mineralogical and granulometric properties of glacial-marine surface sediments of the Weddell Sea and adjoining areas were studied in order to decipher spatial variations of provenance and transport paths of terrigenous detritus from Antarctic sources. The silt fraction shows marked spatial differences in quartz contents. In the sand fractions heavy-mineral assemblages display low mineralogical maturity and are dominated by garnet, green hornblende, and various types of clinopyroxene. Cluster analysis yields distinct heavy-mineral assemblages, which can be...

Respiration and dissolution in sediments of the western Atlantic, supplement to: Hales, Burke; Emerson, Steven R; Archer, David E (1994): Respiration and dissolution in the sediments of the western North Atlantic: estimates from models of in situ microelectrode measurements of porewater oxygen and pH. Deep Sea Research Part I: Oceanographic Research Papers, 41(4), 695-719

Burke Hales, Steven R Emerson & David E Archer
We present in situ microelectrode measurements of sediment formation factor and porewater oxygen and pH from six stations in the North Atlantic varying in depth from 2159 to 5380 m. A numerical model of the oxygen data indicates that fluxes of oxygen to the sediments are as much as an order of magnitude higher than benthic chamber flux measurements previously reported in the same area. Model results require dissolution driven by metabolic CO2 production within...

Global data compilation of benthic data sets II, supplement to: Seiter, Katherina; Hensen, Christian; Zabel, Matthias (2005): Benthic carbon mineralization on a global scale. Global Biogeochemical Cycles, 19, GB1010

Katherina Seiter, Christian Hensen & Matthias Zabel
In this study we present a global distribution pattern and budget of the minimum flux of particulate organic carbon to the sea floor (J POC alpha). The estimations are based on regionally specific correlations between the diffusive oxygen flux across the sediment-water interface, the total organic carbon content in surface sediments, and the oxygen concentration in bottom waters. For this, we modified the principal equation of Cai and Reimers [1995] as a basic monod reaction...

Geochemical analysis at ODP Site 207-1259 from the Demerara Rise in the western equatorial Atlantic, supplement to: März, Christian; Beckmann, Britta; Franke, Christine; Vogt, Christoph; Wagner, Thomas; Kasten, Sabine (2009): Geochemical environment of the Coniacian-Santonian western tropical Atlantic at Demerara Rise. Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology, 273(3-4), 286-301

Christian März, Britta Beckmann, C Franke, Christoph Vogt, Thomas Wagner & Sabine Kasten
Organic carbon-rich shales deposited during the Coniacian–Santonian Oceanic Anoxic Event 3 were drilled during ODP Leg 207 at Demerara Rise. We present integrated high-resolution geochemical records of core intervals from ODP Sites 1259 and 1261 both from nannofossil biozone CC14. Our results reveal systematic variations in marine and detrital sediment contribution, depositional processes, and bottom water redox conditions during black shale formation at two locations on Demerara Rise in different paleo-water depths. A combination of...

Seawater carbonate chemistry and biological processes during experiments with oyster Crassostrea gigas, 2009, supplement to: Havenhand, Jonathan N; Schlegel, Peter (2009): Near-future levels of ocean acidification do not affect sperm motility and fertilization kinetics in the oyster Crassostrea gigas. Biogeosciences, 6(12), 3009-3015

Jonathan N Havenhand & Peter Schlegel
An increasing number of studies are now reporting the effects of ocean acidification on a broad range of marine species, processes and systems. Many of these are investigating the sensitive early life-history stages that several major reviews have highlighted as being potentially most susceptible to ocean acidification. Nonetheless there remain few investigations of the effects of ocean acidification on the very earliest, and critical, process of fertilization, and still fewer that have investigated levels of...
