Aqua/MODIS is viewing the entire Earth's surface every 1 to 2 days, acquiring data in 36 spectral bands. The Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) provides us quantitative data on global ocean bio-optical properties. The concentration of microscopic marine plants, called phytoplankton, can be derived from satellite observation and quantification of ocean color. SeaWiFS operates as a follow-on sensor to the Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS), which ceased operations in 1986.
