Simulation of a Sugarcane Biorefinery for Food Products

T. Lopez-Arenas, O. Anaya-Reza, M. Gonzalez-Contreras, R. Quintero-Ramirez & M. Sales-Cruz
This paper aims to highlight the usefulness of molasses from sugarcane as raw material for the production of food products. The main goal is to establish the conceptual design and the simulation of a sugarcane biorefinery in terms of process flowsheet diagrams. However, a fundamental issue is the decision of the bioproducts of the biorefinery and their percentage of production in relation to the total amount of sugar extracted by the juice and bagasse from...

Development of palladium-based oxygen scavenger : optimization of substrate and palladium layer thickness

Wolfgang Lohwasser, Selçuk Yildirim, Nadine Rüegg & Bettina Röcker
Oxygen scavenging films based on vacuum deposited palladium layers were developed to remove residual oxygen remaining in food packages after modified atmosphere packaging. Palladium (Pd) was coated on to a range of packaging films and in different thicknesses using magnetron sputtering technology. To improve the substrate surface, an additional silicon oxide (SiOx) layer was also applied to the films before Pd deposition. To determine the oxygen scavenging activity, the scavenger films were placed into an...

Environmental Management in event planning - a Life Cycle approach, the Roskilde Festival case

Alexandra Bonou & Stig Irving Olsen
This LCA-based study estimates the environmental impacts of the activities happening on the Roskilde Festival’s site during its 8 day length. The purpose is to prioritize policies and mitigation actions. The system boundaries include: audience transportation; accommodation, food and water consumption; electricity and fuel consumption; waste management. The impact assessment was carried out according to the EDIP method. The results revealed that main contributors to all impact categories are the transportation of festival goers and...

Wpływ gryzoni na regenerację lasu z uwzględnieniem zaburzeń naturalnych i antropogenicznych

Aleksandra Wróbel
The role of the rodents in forest regeneration includes both negative (seed and seedlings consumption) and positive (seed dispersal) aspects. The objective of this paper is to review the knowledge of this dual effect of the rodents on forest regeneration after disturbance, particularly in temperate managed forest stands. Many studies have demonstrated that consumption of seeds and seedlings by rodents can substantially inhibit regeneration of forest stands after disturbance. Small mammal predation on oak, pine...
