Risk analysis for confined space entries: critical analysis of four tools applied to three risk scenarios

Damien Burlet-Vienney, , Ali Bahloul & Brigitte Roberge
Investigation reports of fatal confined space accidents nearly always point to a problem of identifying or underestimating risks. This paper compares 4 different risk analysis tools developed for confined spaces by applying them to 3 hazardous scenarios. The tools were namely (i) a checklist without risk estimation (Tool A), (ii) a checklist with a risk scale (Tool B), (iii) a risk calculation without a formal hazard identification stage (Tool C) and (iv) a questionnaire followed...

Passively Track WiFi Users with an Enhanced Particle Filter using Power-based Ranging

Zan Li & Torsten Braun
Passive positioning systems produce user location information for third-party providers of positioning services. In this work, we provide a passive tracking system for WiFi signals with an enhanced range-only particle filter using fine- grained power. Our proposed particle filter, WVT-BPF, provides an improved observation likelihood and is equipped with a single coordinated turn model to address the challenges in passive positioning. The anchor nodes for WiFi signal sniffing use software defined radio techniques to extract...

Anti-quorum sensing activity of selected sponge extracts: a case study of Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Boris Pejin, Aleksandra Talevska, Ana Ciric, Jasmina Glamoclija, , & Marina Sokovic
The anti-quorum sensing activities towards the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA01 (pyocyanin production, biofilm formation and twitching and flagella motility) of two crude extracts (methanol and acetone) of the freshwater sponge Ochridaspongia rotunda (Arndt, 1937) were evaluated in vitro for the first time. Both extracts demonstrated P. aeruginosa pyocyanin inhibitory activity, reducing its production for 49.90% and 42.44%, respectively. In addition, they both showed higher anti-biofilm activity (48.29% and 53.99%, respectively) than ampicillin (30.84%). Finally, O....

Toward stratified treatments for bipolar disorders

Andreas Wolf & Gregor Hasler
In bipolar disorders, there are unclear diagnostic boundaries with unipolar depression and schizophrenia, inconsistency of treatment guidelines, relatively long trial-and-error phases of treatment optimization, and increasing use of complex combination therapies lacking empirical evidence. These suggest that the current definition of bipolar disorders based on clinical symptoms reflects a clinically and etiologically heterogeneous entity. Stratification of treatments for bipolar disorders based on biomarkers and improved clinical markers are greatly needed to increase the efficacy of...

Synthesis, characterization, interactions with DNA and bovine serum albumin (BSA), and antibacterial activity of cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes containing dithiocarbamate derivatives

Titas Mukherjee, , , , Geeta Hundal &
Three mononuclear cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes having dithiocarbamate ligands, [IrIII(2-C6H4py)2(L)] (where 2-C6H4py = 2-phenylpyridine; and L1H = 4-MePipzcdtH, L2H = MorphcdtH, and L3H = 4-BzPipercdtH for 1, 2, and 3, respectively), were synthesized from [Ir(2-C6H4py)2Cl]2·1/4CH2Cl2 by displacing the two bridging chlorides with one dithiocarbamate ligand. The complexes were characterized using physicochemical and spectroscopic tools along with structural analysis of [Ir(2-C6H4py)2(L2)] (2) by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Structural analysis of 2 showed a distorted octahedron in which...

Transcutaneous oxymetry determined with near-infrared spectroscopy of the anterior compartment of the leg in patients with chronic exertional compartment syndrome

Juan Gabriel Ríos-Kristjánsson, Xavier Gasol, David Domínguez, Teresa Pagès, Ginés Viscor & Antonio Turmo-Garuz
We describe the usefulness of NIRS technology in order to the non-invasive diagnosis of chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS).

Light aerobic exercise can reduce the cardiopulmonary impact of intermittent hypobaric hypoxia exposure in trained rats

Ginés Viscor, Juan Gabriel Ríos-Kistjánsson, David Rizo-Roca, Cristian A. Núñez-Espinosa, Joan Ramon Torrella & Teresa Pagès
Supplementary light aerobic exercise in normoxic conditions could be beneficial for trained individuals in order to reduce the physiological alterations on the cardiopulmonary system induced by altitude exposure.

Defining Sustainability through Developers' Eyes: Recommendations from an Interview Study

Mário Rosado De Souza, Robert Haines & Caroline Jay
Defining 'software sustainability' in the context of research, and determining how best to support it, remains a considerable challenge. The research reported here approaches the question from a new direction by asking research software developers to provide their own experience of and opinions about sustainability.
Two main themes emerged from the study: intrinsic sustainability - concerned with aspects of the software itself - and extrinsic sustainability - concerned with the environment in which it is developed....

A method to induce skeletal muscle damage in trained rats

Juan Gabriel Ríos-Kistjánsson, David Rizo-Roca, Inês Ferreira, Joan Ramon Torrella, Teresa Pagès & Ginés Viscor
A method for skeletal muscle injury induction in trained rats is described and validated by means of the monitorization of several skeletal muscle injury plasma markers.

Newspaper Sales in Japan: Basic Business Model

Scott Koga-Browes
The 'hanbaiten' newspaper sales office can be seen to have two sources of income - the subscribers to whom it retails papers and from whom it collects subscriotion fees, and the local advertisiers who pay it to insert and distribute their advertising sheets (chirashi) to local readers/subscribers/consumers.

Liquid Handling Processes Impact Computational Modeling in Drug Discovery

Antony Williams
The introduction of new pharmaceutical drugs has slowed while money and effort expended by the industry has dramatically increased. We suggest that some of that effort may be inadvertently wasted in drug screening and quantitative structure-activity relationship studies where results can be strongly skewed by the method of liquid handling and the protocol used. Recent work has demonstrated that dispensing processes have a profound influence on estimates of IC50. What appear to be minor modifications...

Spatial EAP Pattern (Polytrode Recordings)

Isabel Delgado Ruz
This dataset contains recordings from mouse auditory cortex and barrel cortex. Neurons were classified as inhibitory/excitatory based on spike waveform ([1]) and separated into putative morphological classes based on parameters fitted to reproduce the recorded EAP spatial pattern. On each movie: -waveform of the extracellular action potential (EAP) recorded on the electrode array (displaying the channel with the largest amplitude) -EAP spatial pattern: heatmap showing the strength of the signal recorded on the electrode array....
