Genome-wide differentially methylated genes in prostate cancer tissues from African-American and Caucasian men

, , , , , , , &
Increasing evidence suggests that aberrant DNA methylation changes may contribute to prostate cancer (PCa) ethnic disparity. To comprehensively identify DNA methylation alterations in PCa disparity, we used the Illumina 450K methylation platform to interrogate the methylation status of 485,577 CpG sites focusing on gene-associated regions of the human genome. Genomic DNA from African-American (AA; 7 normal and 3 cancers) and Caucasian (Cau; 8 normal and 3 cancers) was used in the analysis. Hierarchical clustering analysis...

Applicability of medium-size basis sets in calculations of molecular dynamic polarisabilities

Angelika Baranowska-Łączkowska, Berta Fernández, Antonio Rizzo & Filip Pawłowski
Static and dynamic average polarisabilities and polarisability anisotropies of seven linear non-polar and polar molecules are calculated within the CCS, CC2, and CC3 approximations using a range of medium-sized basis sets: the polarised LPol-n (n = ds, dl, fs, fl), the aug-pc-n (n = 1, 2), the def2-SVPD, and -TZVPD basis sets. Reference values are obtained using a hierarchy of Dunning's (d-)aug-cc-pVXZ (X = D, T, Q, 5) basis sets. The results are discussed together...

Solvent-based extraction optimisation for efficient ultrasonication-assisted ginsenoside recovery from Panax quinquefolius and P. sikkimensis cell suspension lines

Tanya Biswas, , Ajay Kumar Mathur & Archana Mathur
The present study aims at developing an extraction protocol for efficient ginsenoside recovery from cell suspensions of Panax quinquefolius and P. sikkimensis. Methanol (100%, 70% and 30%), water (40°C, 90°C), water-saturated butanol and butanol-saturated water were compared for their ultrasonication-assisted ginsenoside retrieval efficacy. HPLC and HP-TLC analysis revealed 100% methanol as the best solvent for maximum retrieval of Rb (diol) and Rg (triol) ginsenosides (P. quinquefolius: Rb: 0.189, Rg: 3.163 mg/g DW; P. sikkimensis: Rb:...

A) Tissue receiving 20% of the shock received the highest weighting (1) while tissue receiving 10% and 100% of the shock received fixed weightings of 0

The cumulative weighting distribution (b) demonstrates that while approximately 80% of the tissue receives at least 24% of the full shock strength, only 20% of the tissue receives 60% of the full shock strength.Copyright information:Taken from "Extended charge banking model of dual path shocks for implantable cardioverter defibrillators"http://www.biomedical-engineering-online.com/content/7/1/22BioMedical Engineering OnLine 2008;7():22-22.Published online 1 Aug 2008PMCID:PMC2527568.

ERPs are displayed with varying onsets: . from sentence onset, . from the verb's last syllable, and . noun average starting at verb offset.

A novel autophagy/mitophagy inhibitor liensinine sensitizes breast cancer cells to chemotherapy through DNM1L-mediated mitochondrial fission

Jing Zhou, , Yi Zheng, Han-Ming Shen, , , Cheng Huang, Peng Li & Ning Gao
Autophagy inhibition has been widely accepted as a promising therapeutic strategy in cancer, while the lack of effective and specific autophagy inhibitors hinders its application. Here we found that liensinine, a major isoquinoline alkaloid, inhibits late-stage autophagy/mitophagy through blocking autophagosome-lysosome fusion. This effect is likely achieved via inhibiting the recruitment of RAB7A to lysosomes but not to autophagosomes. We further investigated the effects of autophagy inhibition by liensinine on the therapeutic efficacy of chemotherapeutic drugs...

Studies on phytochemicals, antibacterial efficacy and antioxidant potency of Capparis sepiaria on enteric pathogens

Zahid Iqbal, , , , , , , , & Mohsin
In this investigation, Capparis sepiaria was analysed for its phytochemical constituents qualitatively and quantitatively. The antibacterial property of aqueous, ethanolic and hexane extracts of Capparis sepiaria was studied against different bacteria include Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella typhi, Enterobacter aerogenes, and Shigella flexineri. Hexane extract of Capparis sepiaria showed the maximum growth inhibition zone of 20.4±0.2 mm at concentration of 500 mg against Salmonella typhi. Please mention the highest inhibition result including extract name and...

Natural products as sources of new fungicides (II): antiphytopathogenic activity of 2,4-dihydroxyphenyl ethanone derivatives

, Wei Shi, , Yu-Bin Bai & Jin-Ming Gao
A series of 17 simple 1-(2,4-dihydroxyphenyl) ethanones were synthesised, and their structures characterised by 1H, 13C NMR and ESI-MS. Their in vitro antifungal activities were evaluated against five phytopathogenic fungi including Glomerella cingulate, Botrytis cirerea, Fusarium graminearum, Curvularia lunata and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum by the mycelial growth inhibition assay. Compounds 2g and 2h exhibited broad-spectrum inhibitory activity against the mycelial growth of the tested pathogens with IC50 values in the range of 16–36...

Chemical composition, antioxidant and antibacterial properties of Pteranthus dichotomus from Algerian Sahara

Mohammed Benkhaled, , Zina Allaoua, Ammar Dibi, Christophe Long, Mohammed Cherif Aberkane, Soumia Bouzidi & Ahmed Kassah-Laouar
The phytochemical study of ethyl acetate and n-butanol extracts of Pteranthus dichotomus Forssk. led to the isolation and identification of 11 compounds, including three glycolipids 1–3, one lignan 4, three flavonoids 5–7 and four phytosterols 8–11. Structures of the isolated compounds have been elucidated by analysis of 1D and 2D NMR data, and mass spectrometry EI-MS and ESI-MS and by comparison with literature data. Furthermore, the ethyl acetate and n-butanol extracts were examined for their...
