RT-qPCR expression patterns of the 21 contigs used for RNA-Seq expression data validation. The expression values were measured in each of the three resistant F2 plants (R1, R2, R3; red bars) and each of the three sensitive F2 plants (S1, S2, S3; green bars) used for RNA-Seq in each experimental modality. RT-qPCR expression data is normalised using three reference genes. (PPTX 876 kb)

RT-qPCR validation of the RNA-Seq expression patterns of 21 contigs. The expression values were computed for the resistant (R, black bars) or the sensitive pool (S, white bars) for each experimental modality. Normalised expression values were measured by RT-qPCR and averaged for the F2 three plants in each pool (A) or were computed as RPKM values from RNA-Seq data (B). Pearson’s coefficient correlation computed between RT-qPCR and RNA-Seq expression patterns are given in red. (PPTX...

Number of contigs differentially regulated between phenotypes. Six-way Venn diagrams show the number of contigs up-regulated at each time-point in the sensitive pool compared to the resistant pool (A) or in the resistant pool compared to the sensitive pool (B). UT, untreated; xHAT, x hours after herbicide treatment. (PPTX 111 kb)

Probability sheaves

Alex Simpson
In the Articel "The dawning of the age of stochasticity", Tao observes that the probability theory concerns itself with properties that are \preserved with respect to extension of the underlying sample space", in much the same way that modern geometry concerns itself with properties that are invariant with respect to underlying symmetries. Reformulating this in category-theoretic language, probabilistic concepts organise themselves into presheaves over a category of sample spaces. In this talk, I observe that...

RT-qPCR expression patterns of 11 candidate NTSR contigs. 1/4 A Crash course in topos theory : the big picture

André Joyal
About half of the topos theory of SGA4 is devoted to categorical generalities. They are now subsumed by the modern theory of (locally) presentable categories. I will sketch this theory, stressing the results that are important for topos theory. The category of complete lattices and sup-preserving maps is a toy example of this theory.

Movement and fusion of UBQLN2 inclusions in Neuro2A. Live imaging was performed on Neuro2A pFeGFP-hUBQLN2P497H transfected cells. Pictures of a single cell were taken each minute over a 2 h period starting at 24 h after transfection (n = 3). Neuro2A transfected with pFeGFP-hUBQLN2WT display the same aggregates movement. We observed different aggregates combining together over this period. Small aggregates seemed to all combined with the bigger aggregate. (AVI 467717 kb)

2/4 A Crash course in topos theory : the big picture

André Joyal
I will sketch an overall picture of topos theory and of the theory of locales. It includes the notion of sheaf on a site, the notion of forcing topology, of geometric morphism and Giraud's theorem. A useful principle is that a topos is a commutative ring-like object. Every topos is a quotient of a free topos, like every commutative ring is a quotient of a polynomial ring.

Scholars@Cornell: Visualizing the scholarly record

Muhammad Javed & Sandy Payette
As stewards of the scholarly record, Cornell University Library is developing a data and visualization service known as Scholars@Cornell with the goal of improving the visibility of Cornell research and enabling discovery of explicit and latent patterns of scholarly collaboration. We provide aggregate views of data where dynamic visualizations become the entry points into a rich graph of knowledge that can be explored interactively to answer questions such as: Who are the experts in what...

Evaluating Publications Across Business Disciplines: Inferring Interdisciplinary 'Exchange Rates' from Intradisciplinary Author Rankings [NWB'2016 presentation slides]

Timo Korkeamäki, Jukka Sihvonen & Sami Vähämaa
This paper proposes a novel approach for comparing publications across business disciplines. Specifically, we aim to provide an objective method for evaluating the interdisciplinary value of publications based on intradisciplinary author rankings. Using publication data from the leading journals in accounting, economics, finance, management, and marketing, we first construct intradisciplinary author rankings and then utilize these rankings to estimate the marginal effect of an additional publication on the individual’s ranking within her own discipline. Based...

Jesus, my Comfort at Thy Judgment!

Adriana Monaen
This material is a declaration of love. It is art.
Dear Reader,Did you know that words are spirits? It is why words, and thoughts, hurt us or bring us joy. Emotion is of the mind, of the soul. I know, some of us do not believe in the existence of a spiritual world. Do they believe that thoughts do not exist? I believe that our God is Lord Jesus Christ. And I see that thoughts want...
