Bases and clinical applications of clonality assays in the analysis of neoplastic progression

Salvador J. Diaz-Cano
Appropriately applied, these tools can establish the clonal evolution of tumor cell populations (tumor heterogeneity), pick up early relapses, distinguish recurrent tumors from other metachronic neoplasms, and differentiate field transformation from metastatic tumor growths in synchronic and histologically identical neoplasms.

Sentinel Node Biopsies in the Management of Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer

Salvador J. Diaz-Cano
The routine implementation of “new” prognostic variables in tumour pathology will be worth only for cases where the prognostic information provided by other conventional methods is unreliable. Currently, the sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is one those widely applied fashionable techniques aiming to identify microscopic metastatic deposits in the first lymph node draining the tumour area. The use of SLN in non-melanoma skin cancers can effectively identify a subgroup of patients at high risk of...

Liquid Handling Processes Impact Computational Modeling in Drug Discovery

Antony Williams
The introduction of new pharmaceutical drugs has slowed while money and effort expended by the industry has dramatically increased. We suggest that some of that effort may be inadvertently wasted in drug screening and quantitative structure-activity relationship studies where results can be strongly skewed by the method of liquid handling and the protocol used. Recent work has demonstrated that dispensing processes have a profound influence on estimates of IC50. What appear to be minor modifications...

Evolution of total pressure in near microjet region

Max Rife
Large eddy simulations of a high Reynolds number Mach 0.9 jet fitted with 8, uniformly distributed microjets with a pressure ratio of 1.89 have been performed. This animation of total pressure contours in the near microjet region demonstrates the main-microjet interaction. Parcels of high total pressure are shown to be periodically separated from the injected microjet fluid by the main jet shear layer. These high total pressure regions then propagate downstream in the mian jet...

Video of picture wing fly startling a jumping spider

Ian Dworkin
This video demonstrates the interaction between a picture wing fly Delphinia picta (Fabricius) (Insecta: Diptera: Ulidiidae (=Otitidae)) and a zebra jumping spider, Salticus scenicus. It demonstrates that at least this one species from the Ulidiidae shows a similar anti-predator behaviour to that observed by Tephritid flies. Namely it uses a a "wing rowing" behaviour of its banded wings to startle the spider. This is possibly mimicking the territorial display of jumping spiders (which is what...
