American Alligator Home Range and Movement Patterns in Coastal South Carolina

Abby Lawson
*I gave variations of of this talk at the following meetings:-May 25th, 2016, Crocodile Specialist Group Working Meeting-March 11th, 2016, Palmetto Alligator Research Symposium-March 9th, 2016, South Carolina Chapter of the Wildlife Society Annual Meeting
ABSTRACT:Movement patterns have profound implications for many ecological processes like species abundance and distribution, predator-prey interactions, and habitat selection. In the southeastern United States, American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) are a keystone species, capable of altering habitat structure and function. Therefore, alligator...

Sarah Woodfield, , Kathleen Scorsone, Yin Liu & Peter Zage
CHP-134, Kelly, LAN-5, NGP, and SK-N-DZ cells remain resistant to binimetinib at doses exceeding 15 μM. Neuroblastoma cells were treated with increasing concentrations of binimetinib for 120 h and cell viability was determined by MTT assays. (PPTX 60 kb)

Potentially Predatory Journals in Scopus: Descriptive Statistics and Country-level Dynamics [NWB'2016 presentation slides]

Tatiana Savina & Ivan Sterligov
Global rise of metrics-based research assessments is leading to a surge of so-called predatory publishers. These firms and individuals are actively selling WoS\Scopus “indexing” services to authors using gold-Open access model, and are not investing in credible peer review for their journals. In order to get indexed and to attract authors they mimic respected well-established venues. In turn, authors are motivated by simple metric-based evaluations, especially those that treat all WoS\Scopus-indexed papers equally.

Altmetrics @ HULib [NWB'2016 presentation slides]

Susanna Nykyri
Recent changes in scholarly communication and new technology have led to a practical need to expand current bibliometric services at the Helsinki University Library. Traditional bibliometrics measures only a minor part of the attention received and impact of scientific publications. In altmetrics the emphasis is on societal impact, and a broader scope of research artifacts are of interest. Altmetrics aims to catch these new forms and routes of scholarly communication, beyond traditional citations.

Top Ten Alternative Metrics Trends and Research Analytics

Long gone are the days when the only thing researchers produced were research articles. Now, there are almost a countless number of outputs including datasets, videos, books & book chapters, blog posts, posters, figures, musical scores, source code and many more.
How do you measure the impact of these alternative outputs? Or, what about articles that do not get cited? If you are involved in clinical research or translational science then you already know these...

Fetoplacental biometry at 28 dpc for the second generation. Female rabbits inhaled 1mg/m3 of NPs, 2 hours/day, 5 days/week, from 3 dpc to 27dpc. Dams were allowed to give birth generation F1. Adult F1 female (7.5 months of age) were mated and euthanized pregnant at 28 dpc. Fetoplacental units of generation F2 were collected in control (C) and exposed (E) groups. Effect of grand-dam (F0) pregnancy exposure to engine diesel exhaust on second-generation fetuses was...

Indicators as Judgment Devices: The Use of Bibliometrics for Evaluating Candidates for Professorships in Biomedicine and Economics [NWB'2016 presentation slides]

Björn Hammarfelt
The number of publications has been a fundamental merit in the competition for academic positions since the late 18th century. Today, the simple counting of publications has been supplemented with a whole range of bibliometric measures, which supposedly not only measure the volume of research but also its impact. In this study, we investigate how bibliometrics are used for evaluating the impact and quality of publications in two specific settings: biomedicine and eco-nomics. Our study...

Philosophical and theoretical considerations on bibliometric analysis [NWB'2016 presentation slides]

& Alexander D. Rushforth
Previously we explored the distinction between evaluative and descriptive bibliometrics (van Leeuwen, 2004). While the main argument in making this distinction was the ‘reach’ of the conclusions drawn in descriptive bibliometric studies in comparison to evaluative applications of bibliometrics, it never felt really fully elaborated. In this next step we will use a French tradition of philosophy and history of science to further align our thoughts on the distinction between descriptive and evaluative bibliometrics.

Building on some of earlier work of using robots and graphics to teaching and develop Java programming skills.
Previous assignment in problem-solving part of the module have involved robots (Turner and Hill, 2008; Turner and Hill, 2010). Problem raised by the students, robots were not always available when they wanted them.

More than Twenty Years of Research Evaluation in the Netherlands: The Role of Bibliometrics and Bibliometric Expert Organizations [NWB'2016 presentation slides]

Sabrina Petersohn
This paper studies the evolution of the national system of assessment of public research in the Netherlands in the context of Dutch science policy and university governance. It puts a specific focus on the use and relevance of the bibliometric indicators as a tool for measuring scientific quality in former and current evaluation practices.

The study draws on policy documents, archival material and 11 expert interviews with bibliometricians and science policy stakeholders. Also more than 200...

Additional file 1: of Ultrasound-guided cannulation of hemodialysis access

Ultrasound-guided deep peripheral vein cannulation. The brachial vein (depthâ =â 5Â mm) of the mid-arm is cannulated as the blood-returning site under real-time ultrasound guidance. Normally, this vein is not punctured because it is usually invisible, impalpable, and sandwiched between the median nerve and brachial artery. Without dynamic probe scanning, precise and safe cannulation of this vein is difficult. (MP4 13095 kb)
