Poly(oxymethylene) Ethers: Potential Diesel Fuels with Low Sooting Tendencies

Junqing Zhu, Fan Liang Chan, Thomas D. Foust, Stephen Lucas, Matthew J. Montgomery, Lisa D. Pfefferle, Kenneth F. Reardon, Bret C. Windom & Charles McEnally
Presentation given at the 2020 Virtual AIChE Annual Meeting, November 17 2020.
Soot has been identified as the second largest source of climate change after CO2 and it contributes to ambient fine particulates that cause millions of deaths worldwide each year. Diesel engines are a major contributor to total soot emissions because diesel fuels have high sooting tendencies. Poly(oxymethylene) ethers (POMEs) are biomass-derived sustainable diesel fuels reported to have low soot emissions from engines. The structures...

Transkribus - Handwritten Text Recognition for Premodern Documents (SIMS 2020 Lightning Talk)

Tobias Hodel
Transkribus is a platform for text recognition and can be used via the Transkribus Expert Software (available after registration: transkribus.eu). Through Transkribus different tools for document analysis and text recognition can be directly applied. The intro demonstrates very briefly how Transkribus can help with regards to premodern documents especially since a variety of pre-trained models are already available: for Latin (prints and handwriting), for early modern vernaculars in French, Dutch, English, and German. For more...

4AT11_pdf_Our Story_Oral Histories of Women from Turkey

&
This is a transcription of one of the interviews we conducted for our project "Women's Media and Memory". In this project, we aim to record and archive women's memories in Turkey by conducting oral history interviews. In the light of this research, we want to look at feminist understanding of Turkey's history through women's narratives.

Autistic-led post-diagnostic peer support for adults: a qualitative examination of community priorities

Catherine Crompton
Presented at the Scottish Autism Research Group (SARG) conference - 23rd August 2021
Background: Diagnosis in adulthood can be a life changing event, impacting identity, relationships, and mental health. The lack of post-diagnostic support has been highlighted by autistic adults, their allies, clinicians, and service providers, and is a source of distress for autistic adults, reinforcing feelings of social isolation and rejection. Peer support may be a cost-effective, flexible and sustainable model to provide community-based support...

Gabrielė Grigorjeva
This lecture was part of the Postsocialism & Art project led by Dr Nela Milic and Ewelina Warner.
"Beyond (post)communism. A decolonial glimpse into the art of the former Soviet 'colonies" A predominant understanding of the art emerging from the former state socialist countries still firmly connects it with the communist legacy or its denial. This simplified narrow view fails to see other, no less important aspects of these art trajectories that often link with...

Can isotope tools rapidly fill gaps in knowledge of nitrate sources and sinks needed for water quality policy?

Baisden, W. T., Rissmann, C., Horton, T., Wells, N. S., & Clough, T. J. (2015, 1-4 December 2015). Can isotope tools rapidly fill gaps in knowledge of nitrate sources and sinks needed for water quality policy? 2015 NZHS Conference: From Data to Knowledge, Hamilton.
Aims Management of nitrate pollution through the implementation of New Zealand’s National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management (2014) creates strong demand for understanding of the sources and sinks (attenuation) of nitrate...

Coupling models instead of coupling codes: two toy examples

Olivier Lafitte
Coupling models or coupling codes: two examples where the coupled model has better properties than each model. In a simple setting (1d in space), a model of porous media (which is characterized by a degenerate parabolic equation) is coupled with the behavior of the medium, the resulting system is a non degenerate heat equation. Similarly, the diffusion equation of neutronics, which coefficients depend on the local temperature of the nuclear core, is (classically) an eigenvalue...

Approximation and learning with tree tensor networks - lecture 2

Anthony Nouy
Many problems in computational and data science require the approximation of high-dimensional functions. Examples of such problems can be found in physics, stochastic analysis, statistics, machine learning or uncertainty quantification. The approximation of high-dimensional functions requires the introduction of approximation tools that capture specific features of these functions. In this lecture, we will give an introduction to tree tensor networks (TNs), or tree-based tensor formats. In part I, we will present some general notions about...

Independent variablesThe independent variables were Bedside Manner (good or poor) and Depiction (five levels of realism).
Bedside MannerBedside Manner had two conditions, good or poor, designed to exhibit high warmth or low warmth, respectively. The doctor’s bedside manner was depicted mainly via dialogue (40% of the total), nonverbal expression, and gestures. The high-warmth doctor showed patience, care, and empathy toward...
