Micro-nano fiber-assisted active photoacoustic spectroscopy for gas sensing
mengpeng Hu, Hui Zhang, Weibiao Wang & Qiang Wang
We report on the development of all-fiber active photoacoustic spectroscopy, where active photoacoustic effect is generated by embedding a micro-nano fiber inside a fiber laser resonator to exploit the evanescent field of the high intracavity power. Acetylene detection at 1530.37 nm was selected for gas sensing demonstration. With a small diameter of 1.1 μm, the tapped fiber exploited ~20% intracavity power for the evanescent-wave photoacoustic excitation, while only introduced a low intrinsic cavity loss of...

Intimate partner violence (IPV) causes substantial physical and psychological trauma. Restrictions introduced in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including lockdowns and movement restrictions, may exacerbate IPV risk and reduce access to IPV support services. This cross-sectional study examines IPV during COVID-19 restrictions in 30 countries from the International Sexual HeAlth and REproductive Health (I-SHARE) study conducted from July 20th, 2020, to February, 15th, 2021. IPV was a primary outcome measure adapted from a World Health...
Rapid desensitization through immunoadsorption during cardiopulmonary bypass. A novel method to facilitate human leukocyte antigen incompatible heart transplantation
Richard W Issitt, Eamonn Cudworth, Mario Cortina-Borja, Arun Gupta, Delordson Kallon, Richard Crook, Michael Shaw, Alex Robertson, Victor T Tsang, Sophie Henwood, Vivek Muthurangu, Neil J Sebire, Michael Burch & Matthew Fenton
BackgroundAnti-human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-antibody production represents a major barrier to heart transplantation, limiting recipient compatibility with potential donors and increasing the risk of complications with poor waiting-list outcomes. Currently there is no consensus to when desensitization should take place, and through what mechanism, meaning that sensitized patients must wait for a compatible donor for many months, if not years. We aimed to determine if intraoperative immunoadsorption could provide a potential desensitization methodology.MethodsAnti-HLA antibody-containing whole blood...
Access to employment: A comparison of autistic, neurodivergent and neurotypical adults’ experiences of hiring processes in the United Kingdom
Jade Davies, Brett Heasman, Adam Livesey, Amy Walker, Elizabeth Pellicano & Anna Remington
Autistic people face high unemployment rates. One reason for this may be that hiring processes are inaccessible. This study aimed to establish autistic people’s unique experiences of hiring processes in the United Kingdom, by comparing them to the experiences of non-autistic neurodivergent people and neurotypical people. Using qualitative and quantitative data from 225 autistic, 64 non-autistic neurodivergent and 88 neurotypical adults, we identified a series of (dis)similarities in participants’ views and experiences of recruitment for...

Understanding and Improving Older People’s Well-Being through Social Prescribing Involving the Cultural Sector: Interviews from a Realist Evaluation
Jordan Gorenberg, Stephanie Tierney, Geoff Wong, Amadea Turk, Sebastien Libert, Caroline Potter, Kathryn Eccles, Shona Forster, Kerryn Husk, Helen J. Chatterjee, Emma Webster, Beth McDougall, Harriet Warburton, Lucy Shaw & Kamal R. Mahtani
Social prescribing is a non-clinical approach to addressing social, environmental, and economic factors affecting how people feel physical and/or emotionally. It involves connecting people to “community assets” (e.g., local groups, organizations, and charities) that can contribute to positive well-being. We sought to explain in what ways, for whom, and why the cultural sector can support social prescribing with older people. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 28 older people (aged 60+) and 25 cultural sector staff....

Background:The prognostic significance of non-disabling relapses in people with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) is unclear. Objective:To determine whether early non-disabling relapses predict disability accumulation in RRMS.Methods:We redefined mild relapses in MSBase as ‘non-disabling’, and moderate or severe relapses as ‘disabling’. We used mixed-effects Cox models to compare 90-day confirmed disability accumulation events in people with exclusively non-disabling relapses within 2 years of RRMS diagnosis to those with no early relapses; and any early disabling relapses. Analyses...
The Influence of Comorbidity and Perceived Complexity on Outcomes of Referrals to Children and Young Person Mental Health Services (UK): A Mixed Methods Vignette Study
Georgia R Byrne, Roz Shafran, Katy Whadcock & Sophie D Bennett
Children and young people (CYP) with long-term physical conditions (LTCs) are four times more likely to develop mental health disorders yet many cannot access Children and Young People’s Mental Health Services (CYPMHS) or evidence-based interventions. This study aimed to understand the reasons for this; presence of an LTC neurodevelopmental disorder, or service requirements. 79 CYP mental health practitioners were randomly assigned to read vignettes depicting a hypothetical referral letter for a child with a mental...

Observation of Zn dendrite growth via operando digital microscopy and time-lapse tomography
Wenjia Du, Zhenyu Zhang, Francesco Iacoviello, Shangwei Zhou, Rhodri Owen, Rhodri Jervis, Dan Brett & Paul Shearing
The zinc-ion battery is one of the promising candidates for next-generation energy storage devices beyond lithium technology due to the earth abundance of Zn materials and their high volumetric energy density (5855 mA h cm-3). To date, the formation of Zn dendrites during charge-discharge cycling still hinders practical application. It is, therefore, crucial to understand the formation mechanism of the zinc dendritic structure before effectively suppressing its growth. Here, the application of operando digital optical...

Health Behaviors and Mental Health during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Evidence from the English Longitudinal Study of Aging
Giorgio Di Gessa & Paola Zaninotto
Stay-at-home and lockdown measures during the COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on health-related behaviors which in turn posed a risk to mental health, particularly among older people. In this study, we investigated how changes to health behaviors (physical activity, sleeping, eating, and drinking) impacted mental health (depression, quality of life, and life satisfaction) during and beyond the initial phase of the COVID-19 lockdown. Using data from Wave 9 (2018/19) and two COVID-19 sub-studies (June/July 2020;...

Risk Ahead: Actigraphy-Based Early-Warning Signals of Increases in Depressive Symptoms During Antidepressant Discontinuation
Yoram K. Kunkels, Arnout C. Smit, Olga Minaeva, Evelien Snippe, Sandip V. George, Arie M. van Roon, Marieke Wichers & Harriëtte Riese
Antidepressant discontinuation increases the risk of experiencing depressive symptoms. In a repeated single-subject design, we tested whether transitions in depression were preceded by increases in actigraphy-based critical-slowing-down-based early-warning signals (EWSs; variance, kurtosis, autocorrelation), circadian-rhythm-based indicators, and decreases in mean activity levels. Four months of data from 16 individuals with a transition in depression and nine without a transition in depression were analyzed using a moving-window method. As expected, more participants with a transition showed at...
