Olga PM Saweri, Neha Batura, Justin Pulford, M. Mahmud Khan, Xiaohui Hou, William S Pomat, Andrew J Vallely & Virginia Wiseman
Abstract Background Papua New Guinea (PNG) has one of the highest burdens of HIV and syphilis in pregnancy in the Asia-Pacific region. Timely and effective diagnosis can alleviate the burden of HIV and syphilis and improve maternal and newborn health. Supply-side factors related to implementation and scale up remain problematic, yet few studies have considered their impact on antenatal testing and treatment for HIV and syphilis. This study explores health service availability and readiness for...

High-efficiency liquid luminescent solar concentrator based on CsPbBr3 quantum dots

Shaohua Li, Zida Zheng, Yi Zhang, Yue Liu, Xueyun Liu & Xiaowei Zhang
Performance degradation is still a challenge for the development of conventional polymer luminescent solar concentrator (LSC). Liquid LSC (L-LSC) may be an alternative due to polymerization-free fabrication. Here, we have prepared a CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs)-based L-LSC by injecting the QDs solution into a self-assembly quartz glass mold. The as-fabricated L-LSC performance is evaluated by optical characterization and photo-electrical measurement. The external quantum efficiency of the L-LSC is up to 13.44%. After coupling the commercial...

Silicon bowtie structure based all-nonmetal metamaterial (ANM) terahertz device has been developed, which has comparable efficiency to that of their metallic counterparts, and better compatibility with modern semiconductor fabrication processes. Moreover, with the same structure but highly tunable ANM is successfully fabricated through integrating with a flexible substrate, it demonstrates large tunability over a wide frequency range. Such a device can be used in terahertz systems for numerous applications, and potentially be a promising substitute...

Ultra-wideband antireflection assisted by a continuously varying temporal medium

Yi Zhang, Liang Peng, zhengjie huang, Lixin Ran & Dexin Ye
We demonstrate that reflectionless propagation of electromagnetic waves between two different materials can be achieved by designing an intermediate temporal medium, which can work in an ultra-wide frequency band. Such a temporal medium is designed with consideration of a multi-stage variation of the material’s permittivity in the time domain. The multi-stage temporal permittivity is formed by a cascaded quarter-wave temporal coating, which is an extension of the antireflection temporal coating by Pacheco-Peña et al [[1]...

Electrically induced adiabatic frequency conversion in an integrated lithium niobate ring resonator

Xiaotong He, Luis Cortes Herrera, Kwadwo Opong-Mensah, Yi Zhang, Meiting Song, Govind Agrawal & Jaime Cardenas
Changing the frequency of light outside the laser cavity is essential for fields that require precise frequencies such as optical communication, ultracold molecules and single photon sources. Frequency conversion is usually accomplished by nonlinear wave mixing. However, integrating a system with the required high-power optical pump onto a photonic chip is challenging. To achieve on-chip optical frequency conversion, we electrically tune a lithium niobate ring resonator to induce adiabatic frequency conversion. In this work, frequency...

Abstract Background The COMPERA 2.0 4-stratum (4-S) risk score has been demonstrated superior over the 3-stratum (3-S) one in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension and medically managed patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). We aimed to determine the prognostic value of the original 4-S and 3-S COMPERA 2.0 risk score and two new derivative versions in CTEPH patients who underwent balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA). Methods We retrospectively enrolled 175 BPA-treated patients with CTEPH. We...

Engineered second-order nonlinearity in silicon nitride

Yi Zhang, Juniyali Nauriyal, Meiting Song, Marissa Granados Báez, Xiaotong He, Timothy MacDonald & Jaime Cardenas
The lack of a bulk second-order nonlinearity (χ(2)) in silicon nitride (Si3N4) keeps this low-loss, CMOS-compatible platform from key active functions such as Pockels electro-optic (EO) modulation and efficient second harmonic generation (SHG). We demonstrate a successful induction of χ(2) in Si3N4 through electrical poling with an externally-applied field to align the Si-N bonds. This alignment breaks the centrosymmetry of Si3N4, and enables the bulk χ(2). The sample is heated to over 500°C to facilitate...

Abstract Background Ventilatory power is a novel index which could reflect both ventilation efficiency and peripheral blood flow. However, its clinical value in pulmonary hypertension (PH) is rarely discussed. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the diagnostic and prognostic value of ventilatory power as well as its association with disease severity in PH. Methods Consecutive patients with normal hemodynamics and patients diagnosed with PH between September, 2012 and December, 2020 in Fuwai hospital...

Loss of miR-637 promotes cancer cell stemness via WASH/IL-8 pathway and serves as a novel prognostic marker in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract Background Esophageal carcinoma is the highly lethal cancer in the world, predominantly in some areas of East Asia. We previously reported that overexpression of cytoskeleton regulator Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein and SCAR Homolog (WASH) associates with poor prognosis of patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). However, the molecular mechanism and clinical significance involved in WASH overexpression have not been fully elucidated. Methods Bioinformatics analysis and luciferase reporter assay were used to predict and validate...

Abstract Background After emerging in China, the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) quickly spread to all parts of the country and became a global public health emergency. The Chinese government immediately took a series of protective and quarantine measures to prevent the spread of the virus, and these measures may have negative effects on behavior and psychological health. This study aimed to examine the associations between factors related to COVID-19 measures and mental health symptoms...

Abstract Background Zoonoses are public health threats that cause severe damage worldwide. Zoonoses constitute a key indicator of One Health (OH) and the OH approach is being applied for zoonosis control programmes of zoonotic diseases. In a very recent study, we developed an evaluation system for OH performance through the global OH index (GOHI). This study applied the GOHI to evaluate OH performance for zoonoses in sub-Saharan Africa. Methods The framework for the OH index...

Low intratumor heterogeneity correlates with increased response to PD-1 blockade in renal cell carcinoma

Background:Intratumor heterogeneity (ITH) has been shown to be inversely associated with immune infiltration in several cancers including clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), but it remains unclear whether ITH is associated with response to immunotherapy (e.g. PD-1 blockade) in ccRCC.Methods:We quantified ITH using mutant-allele tumor heterogeneity, investigated the association of ITH with immune parameters in patients with ccRCC (n = 336) as well as those with papillary RCC (pRCC, n = 280) from The Cancer...

Background:To achieve favorable hemodynamics, the number of balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) sessions varied significantly among patients with inoperable chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). Increased BPA sessions burdened patients financially and psychologically. We aim to identify baseline characteristics that could predict early BPA response. Methods:Consecutive patients who were diagnosed with inoperable CTEPH and received BPA between May 2018 and October 2021 at Fuwai Hospital were retrospectively collected. Patients were categorized into ‘Early BPA responders’ or ‘Non-early BPA...
