Don’t Risk It. Older Adults Perceive Fewer Future Opportunities and Avoid Social Risk Taking

Rebecca K. Delaney, , Natalie J. Shook, Cameron G. Ford & Philip Lemaster
Drawing from life-span psychology, we conducted two studies to test perceptions of time left in the future as an underlying mechanism for age differences in self-reported social risk taking. Study 1 included 120 younger (25–35 years) and 119 older (60–91 years) community-dwelling adults. Study 2 included 439 participants (18–85 years) mostly recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk. In both studies, older age was associated with rating a lower likelihood of social risk taking (e.g., speaking about...

Equity Crowdfunding: High-Quality or Low-Quality Entrepreneurs?

Daniel Blaseg, Douglas Cumming & Michael Koetter
Equity crowdfunding (ECF) has potential benefits that might be attractive to high-quality entrepreneurs, including fast access to a large pool of investors and obtaining feedback from the market. However, there are potential costs associated with ECF due to early public disclosure of entrepreneurial activities, communication costs with large pools of investors, and equity dilution that could discourage future equity investors; these costs suggest that ECF attracts low-quality entrepreneurs. In this paper, we hypothesize that entrepreneurs...

Anxiolytic effects of polydatin through the blockade of neuroinflammation in a chronic pain mouse model

Shao-Yu Guan, Kun Zhang, , Le Yang, Bin Feng, Dan-Dan Tian, Mei-Rong Gao, , An Liu &
BackgroundChronic pain is frequently comorbid with anxiety disorder, thereby complicating its treatment. Polydatin, a component from the root of Polygonum cuspidatum, has shown neuroprotection in the central nervous system. However, its effects on pain and anxiety processing have been rarely investigated. In this study, mice were injected with complete Freund’s adjuvant (CFA) at the hindpaw to induce pain- and anxiety-like behaviors.ResultsTreatment with polydatin (25 mg/kg) alleviated the anxiety-like behaviors but not pain perception in these...

Control of glutamate release by complexes of adenosine and cannabinoid receptors

Attila Köfalvi, , , Ning-Sheng Cai, Victor Fernández-Dueñas, Samira Ferreira, Ramón Guixà-González, Marta Sánchez-Soto, Hideaki Yano, , Rodrigo Cunha, Ana Sebastião, Francisco Ciruela, Leonardo Pardo, Vicent Casadó & Sergi Ferré
Abstract Background It has been hypothesized that heteromers of adenosine A2A receptors (A2AR) and cannabinoid CB1 receptors (CB1R) localized in glutamatergic nerve terminals mediate the integration of adenosine and endocannabinoid signaling involved in the modulation of striatal excitatory neurotransmission. Previous studies have demonstrated the existence of A2AR-CB1R heteromers in artificial cell systems. A dependence of A2AR signaling for the Gi protein-mediated CB1R signaling was described as one of its main biochemical characteristics. However, recent studies...

Rebel Territorial Control and Civilian Collective Action in Civil War: Evidence from the Communist Insurgency in the Philippines

Michael A. Rubin
Under what conditions do rebel organizations control territory during civil war? How do civilians influence the distribution of territorial control? This article introduces a civilian agency theory, emphasizing community collective action capacity (CAC) defined by underlying social network structure, to complement existing explanations of territorial control. I argue communities with greater CAC mobilize information and resources more efficiently, increasing belligerents’ incentives to control territory. However, CAC also increases community bargaining power to demand costly investments...

Systematic Review of English Early Literacy Interventions for Children Who Are Dual Language Learners

Jin Hee Hur, Patricia Snyder & Brian Reichow
Children who are dual language learners (DLLs) often have more difficulty acquiring English early literacy skills than their English monolingual peers. Much remains to be learned about efficacious early literacy instructional interventions and their effects on English early literacy skills of DLLs. The purposes of this systematic review were to describe key features of English early literacy interventions provided to children who were DLLs and their effects on English early literacy skills. We conducted an...

Does the Residential Landscape Contextualize Friendships? Examining the Causes and Consequences of Affiliating with Older Friends

Alexis Yohros & Gregory M. Zimmerman
Objectives:Examine the relationships among structural disadvantage, friendship network age composition, and violent offending by investigating the contextual and individual etiology of affiliating with older friends and exploring the mechanisms that link friendship network age composition to violent offending.Method:Hierarchical linear models analyze 8,481 respondents distributed across 1,485 census tracts from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. Social network data are used to construct a measure of the proportion of a respondent’s friendship network...

X-Porous TTA technique for stabilization of the CCL-deficient stifle in the dog

X-Porous TTA is a variant of the conventional tibial tuberosity advancement for the treatment of the cruciate-deficient stifle in the dog. Although the basic principles are the same, the technique presents some peculiarities. The most important specific feature is represented by the use of a single screw on the tibial side of the plate. The tibial screw will function as a hinge, allowing the tibial crest to exert cyclic compression on the tibial metaphysis during...

Construction and characterization of a high-quality cDNA library of Cymbidium faberi suitable for yeast one- and two-hybrid assays

, , , & Yin Zhou
Abstract Background Cymbidium faberi is one of the oldest cultivars of oriental orchids, with an elegant flower fragrance. In order to investigate the molecular mechanism and the functions of related proteins in the methyl jasmonate (MeJA) signaling pathway, one of the main components of flower fragrance in C. faberi, yeast one- and two-hybrid three-frame cDNA libraries were constructed. Results In this study, a modified cDNA library used for yeast one- and two-hybrid screening was successfully...

A method for functional testing constitutive and ligand-induced interactions of lysin motif receptor proteins

Chun-Lian Li, De-Xing Xue, Yi-Han Wang, Zhi-Ping Xie & Christian Staehelin
Abstract Background Plant receptors with lysin motifs (LsyM) recognize microbial signals such as fungal chitin and lipo-chitooligosaccharidic Nod factors of nitrogen-fixing rhizobia. It is generally assumed that ligand-induced dimerization of LysM receptors is an essential step in activation of intracellular kinase domains and downstream signaling. Consequently, genes required for plant defense and establishment of symbiosis are expressed. We recently found that three LysM receptor proteins (namely LYK1, LYK4 and LYK5) of Arabidopsis thaliana form a...

Lena Gustafsson, Mats Hannerz, Matti Koivula, Ekaterina Shorohova, Ilkka Vanha-Majamaa & Jan Weslien
Abstract Retention approaches in forest management are today common in several North European countries, integrated into the clearcutting practice as a way to promote biodiversity and maintain ecosystem functions. Individual green trees and retention patches (tree groups) are retained at final harvest, and deadwood is left at site or created. Here, we review research on retention in Sweden, Finland, Norway, the Baltic States, and NW Russia, with special focus on biodiversity. Following the first publication...

Uncontrolled hypertension among patients with comorbidities in sub-Saharan Africa: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis

Shukri Mohamed, , , Ivy Chumo, Martin Mutua, & Paramjit Gill
Abstract Background Uncontrolled hypertension is the most important risk factor and leading cause of cardiovascular diseases. It is predicted that the number of people with hypertension will increase, and a large proportion of this increase will occur in developing countries. The highest prevalence of uncontrolled hypertension is reported in sub-Saharan Africa, and treatment for hypertension is unacceptably low. Hypertension commonly co-exists with comorbidities and this is associated with poorer health outcomes for patients. This review...

Mining of favorable alleles for seed reserve utilization efficiency in Oryza sativa by means of association mapping

Nour Ali, , , Dina Abdulmajid, Lal Bux, , &
Abstract Background Wet direct-seeded rice is a possible alternative to conventional puddled transplanted rice; the former uses less water and reduces labor requirements. Improving seed reserve utilization efficiency (SRUE) is a key factor in facilitating the application of this technology. However, the QTLs controlling this trait are poorly investigated. In this study, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was conducted using a natural population composed of 542 accessions of rice (Oryza sativa L.) which were genotyped...
