Range extension of tripletail Lobotes surinamensis (Lobotidae) in the Adriatic Sea. A northernmost record in the Mediterranean

Jakov Dulčić, Branko Dragičević, Lovrenc Lipej & Mauro Štifanić
On 12th May 2013, a specimen of Lobotes surinamensis (Lt = 342 mm, W = 845.32 g) was caught in Raša Bay (Northern Adriatic, southern coast of Istra Peninsula). This is the northernmost occurrence of this species in the Adriatic and Mediterranean Sea.

Cumulative toll of exposure to stressors in Canadians: An allostatic load profile

Errol M. Thomson, Harun Kalayci & Mike Walker
The cumulative toll of exposure to stressors (psychosocial, chemical, physical) can contribute to disease processes. The concept of allostatic load, essentially the cost of maintaining physiological stability in response to environmental demands, may be useful in assessing broad population health impacts of stressors beyond morbidity and mortality. In this study, allostatic load scores were generated for Canadians using data from cycles 1, 2, and 3 (2007 to 2013) of the Canadian Health Measures Survey, and...

xbp-1 mRNA splicing is attenuated under prolonged exposure to ER stress

Jennifer Tsialikas & Yair Argon
IRE-1 is an endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane-bound protein that mediates the unfolded protein response (UPR) when cells are under ER stress. Once activated, IRE-1 cleaves an intron from the xbp-1 mRNA (Calfon et al. 2002). This yields an active XBP-1 transcription factor, which activates transcription of ER chaperones and other genes involved in protein biosynthesis. Splicing of the xbp-1 intron can be measured by a shift in size in an agarose gel (Shen et al....

Texture du gypse dans les mousses minérales

Annabelle Phelipot-Mardele & Christophe Lanos

UNC-108/RAB-2 is required for C. elegans stress-induced sleep

Bryan Robinson & Cheryl Van Buskirk
In a genetic screen for mutants defective in stress-induced sleep (SIS) we isolated csn2, an allele of the UNC-108/RAB-2 GTPase. The point mutation in unc-108(csn2) is identical to that in the previously characterized loss-of-function allele unc-108(n3263), substituting a glutamine in place of a glycine that is conserved among Ras superfamily members (Mangahas et al., 2008). Similar to other unc-108(lf) mutants, csn2 animals move slowly (not shown). Here we show that unc-108(csn2) as well as previously...

Méthodologie d’étude des digues anciennes en terre de latérites au Burkina Faso

Angelbert Biaou, Abdoulaye Nadjibou, Abdou Lawane, Tariq Ouahbi, Anne Pantet & Saïd Taibi

P. Monnot, C. Poinclou, P. Blanc, A. Rojo, L. Molez & C. Lanos

Morphological characterization of striped seabream (Lithognathus mormyrus, Sparidae) in some Mediterranean lagoons

Ibtissem Hammami, Lilia Bahri-Sfar, Myriam Kaouèche, Gael Grenouillet, Sovan Lek, M. Hichem Kara & Oum Kalthoum Ben Hassine
Morphological variation of Lithognathus mormyrus (Linnaeus, 1758) samples harvested in six Mediterranean lagoons was investigated using 23 truss elements and 11 conventional linear measurements. Multivariate analyses revealed a highly significant morphological discrimination between western Mediterranean basin samples (lagoons of Bizerta, Ghar El Melh and Mellah) that differ from each other but are also differentiated from the oriental lagoon samples (lagoons of El Biban, Farwa and Venice) by some variables, which are related to the head...

Histological study of the median lingual dental plate of the Cretaceous fish †Palaeonotopterus greenwoodi (Teleostei: Osteoglossomorpha) from the Kem-Kem beds, Morocco

François J. Meunier, Didier Dutheil & Paulo M. Brito
We describe the histology of the lingual dental plate of an extinct Notopteridae, †Palaeonotopterus greenwoodi, from the Cenomanian Kem-Kem Beds in Morocco. The lingual dental plate is bulky. Its regular and more or less smooth crushing surface does not exhibit any teeth externally. The plate is composed of several superimposed layers of side-by-side teeth. The teeth are attached to each other by a small amount of cellular bony tissue that may contain some vascular canals....
