Early sex reversal during embryonic development in the Nile tilapia

Carole Rougeot, Samane Y. Kanfitine, Christian Prignon, Vincent Gennotte & Charles Mélard
The aim of this work was to study the effect of hormonal sex-reversal treatment during embryonic development of Nile tilapia. XX and XY embryos were incubated in 17 α-methyltestosterone or in 17α-ethynylestradiol during embryonic development. Mean survival rates of embryos 5 days post-hatching ranged from 13.1% to 63.9%. XY embryos incubated in E2 displayed a significant proportion of females (from 50.6 to 79.0%) and XX embryos incubated in MT a significant proportion of males (from...

Motility characteristics of spermatozoa in cod (Gadus morhua) and hake (Merluccius merluccius)

Jacky Cosson, Anne-Laure Groison, Marc Suquet & Christian Fauvel
As in many marine fish, motility is triggered by osmotic pressure (OP) in cod and hake spermatozoa and motility ranges several minutes with a high velocity (above 50 μm/s) period restricted to 100 s. A decrease in the flagellar beat frequency (BF) is partly responsible of this briefness. Detailed observations of the flagella during the motility period showed: 1) sea water provokes OP damages (blebs) which impair the correct wave propagation 2) waves become restricted...

Gene bashing of ceh-6 locus identifies genomic regions important for ceh-6 rectal cell expression and rescue of its mutant lethality

Arnaud Ahier, Shashi Kumar Suman & Sophie Jarriault
Loss of the activity of certain genes, such as ceh-6, can lead to lethality at early developmental stages, precluding the study of their function later on during development. Indeed, it was reported that more than 80% of ceh-6(mg60) animals died during embryogenesis exhibiting various phenotypes, including an abnormal rectal area and absent excretory canal cell (Bürglin and Ruvkun 2001). mg60 is a 1.4kb deletion allele that removes ceh-6 second exon and is believed to cause...

Labour use on Australian agriculture

Peter Martin, Lucy Randall & Tom Jackson
Data on agricultural labour use and workforce profile collected through surveys of broadacre, dairy, vegetable and fruit and nut farms in 2018-19 are presented here as a data visualisation product. Users can select from a range of options to understand the seasonality of labour use, the profile of workers and recruitment difficulties experienced in 2018-19. Data can be customised by users, to display information for a range of worker types, regions and farm sizes.

Review of Giuris (Teleostei: Eleotridae) from Indo-Pacific islands, with description of three new species

Philippe Keith & Marion I. Mennesson
Giuris species from the Indo-Pacific area are reviewed. Eight species are recognized including three new species. These are described using genetic and morphomeristic approaches. The species differ by a high percentage of divergence in partial COI gene (495 bp) and by several characters including the number of pectoral fin rays, the number of scales in transverse forward series, the number of scales around the eye, the interorbital length, and the body depth at first dorsal...

Reevaluation of the Perciformes from the Late Cretaceous Marília Formation of Brazil and its confirmation as a Siluriformes

Paulo M. Brito, François J. Meunier & Yuri M. Alves
A fossil spine, originally described as belonging to Perciformes from the Late Cretaceous Marília Formation, Bauru Basin, Southeastern Brazil, is here restudied based on paleohistology. In addition to the overall morphology of the spine, our histological results point to the presence of pseudolamellar bone with embedded star-shaped osteocytes. These results confirm the recent redescription of this specimen as a Siluriformes, and confirm the absence, so far, of Percomorpha in freshwater deposits from the Cretaceous of...

Seasonal-related homologous regulation of goldfish liver Estrogen receptor subtypes

Erik R. Nelson & Hamid R. Habibi
Treatment with estrogen was found to increase expression of estrogen receptor subtypes (ERα, ERβ1 or ERβ2) in the liver of goldfish during regressed gonadal stage. Here, we test the hypothesis that homologous ER regulation may occur in a seasonal-dependant manner. To make seasonal comparison, we investigated homologous regulation of the ERs expression in the livers of goldfish at mid-late stage of gonadal recrudescence. The results demonstrate that homologous regulation of the ER subtypes are different...

Estrogenic response of wild roach from the Seine River (France)

Perrine Maltret-Geraudie, Marie Gerbron & Christophe Minier
The aquatic environment is the final destination for most chemicals released in the environment, as a consequence freshwater populations are inevitably exposed and may suffer from adverse effects. Fish have been widely used as models for determining the effect of environmental pollutants on vertebrate reproductive function. Several studies have demonstrated endocrine disrupting effects on fish living in rivers that receive treated sewage effluents. To investigate the estrogenic effects of effluents from the Seine River, plasmatic...

French ichthyological records for 2018

Samuel P. Iglésias &
Uncommon records of fishes may evidence local or global changes in fish composition resulting from environmental change or anthropogenic activities. Significant records of uncommon marine fishes, including migrant, non-native, cryptic, rare and threatened species, collected in French waters or by French vessels in European waters, observed by scuba divers or beachgoers, are reported for the year 2018. They include first, new, rare and unusual records for the following 52 species: Hexanchus griseus, Squatina squatina, Gymnura...
