An environment is often represented by numerous sensory cues. In order to better survive, an animal often needs to detect and process sensory cues simultaneously to make an appropriate behavioral decision. The Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) genome encodes homologues of a significant number of molecules expressed in mammalian brains, which allows characterizing of the molecular and circuit basis for multi-sensory behavior during decision-making (Bargmann, 1998). In addition, studies have demonstrated various genes and neurons in...
Effects of gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa) administration on male germ cell apoptosis in captive Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus L.)Aldo Corriero, Antonio Medina, Constantinos C. Mylonas, Nicoletta Santamaria, Michele Losurdo, Francisco J. Abascal, Daniela Spedicato, Aida Aprea, Christopher R. Bridges & Gregorio De Metrio
The effects of gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa) administration on testicular maturation and apoptosis of male germ cells of Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus L.) reared in captivity were evaluated. Individuals classified at early and late spermatogenesis were equally present among untreated and GnRHa-treated fish. A lower rate of germ cell apoptosis was observed in GnRHa-treated individuals than in untreated controls. The present study indicates that: (i) wild-caught male Atlantic bluefin tuna reared for 1 to...
In order to improve our understanding of factors determining egg quality in fish, seabass egg batches obtained from 34 females held under standard conditions, were assessed for biological performances and a fraction from each batch was subjected to proteomic analysis. Comparison of proteomic patterns from eggs of different quality revealed differential protein spots among which one was identified as Nucleoside Diphosphate Kinase, a highly conserved protein involved in cell proliferation. This study shows that molecular...
We examined the effects of maturation stimulating hormone, salmon pituitary extract (SPE) or 17α-hydroxyprogesterone (17α-OHP), injections on the post-thaw motility of ayu spermatozoa. Comparative post-thaw motility (percent motility of post-thawed spermatozoa/that of fresh spermatozoa x100) in the Ringer control group showed higher percent motility in the late time than in the early time of the spawning season. Post-thaw motility was higher in the SPE and 17α-OHP groups than in the Ringer control group. These results...
Specific binding of exogenous sex hormones and chemical substances to sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) in carp and rainbow troutMasaki Nagae, Yuichi Suminami, Hiroko Kitagawa, Ken Ichirou Shiroyama, Nobuyuki Ohkubo & Takahiro Matsubara
The binding characteristics of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG ), the most important transporter of sex steroids in blood, was investigated using various kinds of sex steroids in carp and rainbow trout in vivo and in vitro. In vitro binding assay using various kinds of sex steroids revealed androgens (T and 11-KT), estrogens (E2 and EE2) and progestins (17α-P and 17α,20b-DP) have a high affinity to SHBG. However, the affinity of estrone, cortisol, and bisphenol-A to...
Unfertilized rainbow trout eggs were kept at 2 ± 1°C under O2, CO2, N2, air or expired air. Eggs were stored either loose or sealed in PE foil. After 5, 10, 15 and 20 d the pH was recorded and the eggs were fertilized with cryopreserved semen and incubated to the eyed egg stage. Under CO2 eggs succumbed within 1 d. Between air and exhaled air there was no difference. With loose eggs air was...
Sperm chromatin fragmentation and oxidization during short- and long-term storage of sex reversed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) malesSerafín Pérez-Cerezales, Sonia Martínez-Páramo & M. Paz Herráez
Sperm storage is a basic tool for reproductive biotechnology that causes cell damage at different levels. Our objective was to detect DNA strand breaks or nucleotide oxidization promoted by short and long-term storage in spermatozoa from sex-reversed rainbow trout, using the Comet assay and previous digestion with specific endonucleases. Short-term storage promotes strand breaks and oxidization, especially in guanines. Cryopreservation increases DNA fragmentation, but apparently does not cause oxidization, suggesting possible apoptotic events.
High transcript level of a fatty acid-binding protein 11 but not of vitellogenin receptor is correlated to ovarian follicle atresia in a teleost fish (Solea senegalensis)Maria J. Agulleiro, Michèle André, Sofia Morais, Joan Cerdá & Patrick J. Babin
The expression level of vtgr transcripts may be used as a precocious functional marker to quantify the number of oocytes recruited for vitellogenesis and fabp11 mRN A may be a very useful molecular marker for determining cellular events and environmental factors that regulate follicular atresia in fish.
Reproductive and spawning cycle of mudskipper were examined. The reproductive season in this species was between May and early August. The final oocyte maturation and spawning in natural conditions depend on the endocrine changes that are induced by environmental cue such as tidal variability.
Fish egg quality and oocyte transcriptome. A new approach using cDNAs microarrays on oocytes after two ovulation perturbationsEmilie Bonnet, Bernard Jalabert, Alexis Fostier & Julien Bobe
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of photoperiod-advanced spawning and hormonallyinduced ovulation on egg quality and egg transcriptome. Experimentations were performed using 3 groups of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) from an autumn-spawning strain: (i) natural spawning, (ii) photoperiod-advanced, and (iii) hormonally- induced group. For each female, egg quality was evaluated by measuring survival and malformations at yolk-sac resorption. Transcriptome analysis was performed using AGENAE microarrays displaying 9,152 rainbow trout cDNA s....
Cd63 is an adapter protein belonging to the tetraspanin family. As other members, it possesses four membrane-spanning domains, two extracellular loops, and the N- and C-terminus both face the cytoplasm. Cd63 is highly enriched in intraluminal vesicles (ILV) of late endosomes (LE; also called multivesicular bodies, MVB; Termini and Gillette, 2017). Cd63 trafficking to LE occurs via classical routes, i.e. from the ER to the Golgi complex, then to the plasma membrane, from where it...
Tetraspanins (TSPAN) are a family of (33 in humans) scaffold proteins consisting of the name-giving four membrane-spanning domains, two extracellular loops, and an intracellular N- and C-terminus. By forming ‘tetraspanin-enriched microdomains’ they participate in organizing the plasma membrane and serve as multipurpose adapters. Some can be found ubiquitously in most cells, while others are specific to certain cell types. On a subcellular level, enrichment in distinct membrane-associated organelles has been documented for several members (Termini...

UPF1 is an RNA helicase that scans RNA to unwind secondary structures and to displace associated factors (Franks et al., 2010; Fiorini et al., 2015; Lee et al., 2015; Kanaan et al., 2018). UPF1 has been mostly studied for its role in nonsense mediated mRNA decay (NMD) and other translation-dependent RNA quality-control pathways in the cytoplasm (Isken and Maquat, 2008; Kim and Maquat, 2019). However, we have recently reported that UPF1 associates, genome wide, with...
