Land Cover Map 2007 (vector, N. Ireland)

R.D. Morton, C. Rowland, C.M. Wood, L. Meek, G. Marston, G. Smith, R. Wadsworth & I. Simpson
LCM2007 is a parcel-based thematic classification of satellite image data covering the entire United Kingdom. The map updates and upgrades the Land Cover Map of Great Britain (LCMGB) 1990 and LCM2000. Like the earlier 1990 and 2000 products, LCM2007 is derived from a computer classification of satellite scenes obtained mainly from Landsat, IRS and SPOT sensors. It also covers Northern Ireland and incorporates information derived from other ancillary datasets. LCM2007 was classified using a nomenclature...

Data from: Increasing temperature, not mean temperature, is a cue for avian timing of reproduction

Sonja Verena Schaper, Alistair S. Dawson, Peter J. Sharp, Phillip Gienapp, Samuel P. Caro, Marcel E. Visser, Sonja V. Schaper & Alistair Dawson
Timing of reproduction in temperate zone birds is strongly correlated with spring temperature, with an earlier onset of breeding in warmer years. Females adjust their laying between years to be synchronized with local food sources and thereby optimize reproductive output. However, climate change currently disrupts the link between predictive environmental cues and spring phenology. To investigate direct effects of temperature on the decision to lay, and its genetic basis, we used pairs of Great Tits...

Data from: Evolutionary significance of the invasion of introduced populations into the native range of Meconopsis cambrica

Francisco J Valtueña, Christopher D Preston & Joachim W Kadereit
The long history of the deliberate or accidental, human-mediated dispersal of flowering plants has led to the introduction of foreign genotypes of many species into areas of Europe hitherto occupied by potentially distinct native populations. Studies of the genetic and evolutionary consequences of such changes are handicapped by the difficulty of identifying the surviving native populations of many species in the absence of clear morphological differences. We investigated the relationship between putative native and introduced...

Data from: Phylogeography of a Tertiary relict plant, Meconopsis cambrica (Papaveraceae), implies the existence of northern refugia for a temperate herb

Francisco J. Valtueña, Christopher D. Preston & Joachim W. Kadereit
The perennial herb Meconopsis cambrica, a western European endemic, is the only European species of the otherwise Himalayan genus Meconopsis and has been interpreted as a Tertiary relict species. Using rbcL and ITS sequence variation, we date the split between M. cambrica and its sister clade Papaver s.str. to the Middle to Upper Miocene (12.8 My, 6.4-19.2 My HPD). Within M. cambrica, cpDNA sequence variation reveals the existence of two groups of populations with a...

Observations of Fukushima fallout in Great Britain

N.A. Beresford, C.L. Barnett, B.J. Howard, D.C. Howard, A.N. Tyler, S. Bradley & D. Copplestone
Following the Fukushima accident in March 2011, grass samples were collected from 42 sites around Great Britain during April 2011. Iodine-131 was measurable in grass samples across the country with activity concentrations ranging from 10 to 55 Bq per kg dry matter. Concentrations were similar to those reported in other European countries. Rainwater and some foodstuffs were also analysed from a limited number of sites. Of these, I-131 was only detectable in sheep's milk (c....
