Fangyuan Hua, Xiaoyang Wang, Xinlei Zheng, Robert Dorazio, Brendan Fisher, Lin Wang, Jianguo Zhu, Ya Tang, Douglas W. Yu & David S. Wilcove
Reforestation is a critical means of addressing the environmental and social problems of deforestation. China’s Grain-for-Green Program (GFGP) is the world’s largest reforestation scheme. Here we provide the first nationwide assessment of the tree composition of GFGP forests and the first combined ecological and economic study aimed at understanding GFGP’s biodiversity implications. Across China, GFGP forests are overwhelmingly monocultures or compositionally simple mixed forests. Focusing on birds and bees in Sichuan Province, we find that...
Data from: IL-33 mediated iLC2 activation and neutrophil IL-5 production in the lung response after severe trauma: a reverse translation study from a human cohort to a mouse trauma model

Background: The immunosuppression and immune dysregulation that follows severe injury includes type 2 immune responses manifested by elevations in interleukin (IL) 4, IL5, and IL13 early after injury. We hypothesized that IL33, an alarmin released early after tissue injury and a known regulator of type 2 immunity, contributes to the early type 2 immune responses after systemic injury. Methods and findings: Blunt trauma patients admitted to the trauma intensive care unit of a level I...
Mice deficient in UXT exhibit retinitis pigmentosa-like features via aberrant autophagy activation
Mingyu Pan, Yue Yin, Xinxia Wang, Quanyi Wang, Lele Zhang, Haiyang Hu & Chen Wang
UXT (ubiquitously expressed prefoldin like chaperone), a small chaperone-like protein, is widely expressed in diverse human and mouse tissues and is more abundant in retina and kidney. However, the functional characterization of UXT at tissue level was largely unknown. Here, we reported that mice deficient in UXT exhibited salient features of retinal degenerative disease, similar to retinitis pigmentosa. Conditional knockout (CKO) of Uxt led to retinal degeneration and pigmentation in mice retina along with significant...

Statistical Learning for Individualized Asset Allocation
Yi Ding, Yingying Li & Rui Song
We establish a high-dimensional statistical learning framework for individualized asset allocation. Our proposed methodology addresses continuous-action decision-making with a large number of characteristics. We develop a discretization approach to model the effect of continuous actions and allow the discretization frequency to be large and diverge with the number of observations. We estimate the value function of continuous-action using penalized regression with our proposed generalized penalties that are imposed on linear transformations of the model coefficients....
