Fei Huang, Le Wang, Qian Zhang, Zhengce Wan, Liu Hu, Ranran Xu, Anying Cheng, Yongman Lv & Qingquan Liu
This study explored whether lipid disorders or an elevated atherogenic index of plasma (AIP, a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases) could predict major kidney function decline. We conducted a retrospective 7-year cohort study of 3712 Chinese adults followed up between 2010 and 2017. Major kidney function decline was defined as a ≥ 30% reduction in the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) from baseline. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to evaluate the relationship between lipid...

Mice deficient in UXT exhibit retinitis pigmentosa-like features via aberrant autophagy activation

Mingyu Pan, Yue Yin, Xinxia Wang, Quanyi Wang, Lele Zhang, Haiyang Hu & Chen Wang
UXT (ubiquitously expressed prefoldin like chaperone), a small chaperone-like protein, is widely expressed in diverse human and mouse tissues and is more abundant in retina and kidney. However, the functional characterization of UXT at tissue level was largely unknown. Here, we reported that mice deficient in UXT exhibited salient features of retinal degenerative disease, similar to retinitis pigmentosa. Conditional knockout (CKO) of Uxt led to retinal degeneration and pigmentation in mice retina along with significant...

Sichuan Province is located at the transitional junction regions of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the low-altitude plains. It also serves as the corridor of Sino-Tibetan-speaking population migration and expansion since neolithic expansion of Proto-Tibeto-Burman populations from Middle/Upper Yellow River during Majiayao period (3300–2000 BC). However, the population structure and the corresponding genetic diversity of forensic-related markers in this region remain unclear. Thus, we genotyped 30 insertion-deletion (InDel) markers in 444 samples from four ethnic groups...

Composite quasi-likelihood for single-index models with massive datasets

Rong Jiang, Meng-Fan Guo & Xin Liu
The single-index models (SIMs) provide an efficient way of coping with high-dimensional nonparametric estimation problems and avoid the “curse of dimensionality.” Many existing estimation procedures for SIMs were built on least square loss, which is popular for its mathematical beauty but is non-robust to non-normal errors and outliers. This article addressed the question of both robustness and efficiency of estimation methods based on a new data-driven weighted linear combination of convex loss functions instead of...

Takae Ebihara, Peijun Gui, Chika Ooyama, Koichi Kozaki & Satoru Ebihara
Cough, an important respiratory symptom, predominantly involves the brainstem, and the urge-to-cough is modulated by the cerebral cortex. Lewy body disease is associated with decreased cough reflex sensitivity and central respiratory chemosensitivity. Additionally, the insula, associated with the urge-to-cough, shows decreased activation and atrophy in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). We investigated the relationships between cognition and cough reflex and the urge-to-cough and compared the differences in responses of patients with DLB and other dementia...

Proscillaridin A slows the prostate cancer progression through triggering the activation of endoplasmic reticulum stress

Fan Wang, Lin Liu, Yu Tong, Linfeng Li, Yanfeng Liu & Wei-Qiang Gao
Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second commonly diagnosed malignancy in men over the world. Although androgen deprivation therapy for advanced PCa patients has significantly improved their survival, the majority of these patients eventually develop castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). Proscillaridin A (Pro A), a cardiac glycoside that is clinically used to treat various heart failure diseases, has been reported to have anticancer activity in several cancers. However, whether Pro A exerts an inhibitory effect on PCa...
