From Black Box to Shining Spotlight
Andrew J. Sage, Yang Liu & Joe Sato
We introduce a pair of Shiny web applications that allow users to visualize random forest prediction intervals alongside those produced by linear regression models. The apps are designed to help undergraduate students deepen their understanding of the role that assumptions play in statistical modeling by comparing and contrasting intervals produced by regression models with those produced by more flexible algorithmic techniques. We describe the mechanics of each approach, illustrate the features of the apps, provide...

Preparation of bisDOPO-NH2-POSS flame retardant and its application to plywood using modified urea-formaldehyde resin
Mingyu Wen, Junxian Xu, Jiazhi Zhu, Yang Liu, Chao Deng, Junyou Shi & Heejun Park
A new type of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes bisDOPO-NH2-POSS flame retardant consisting of one polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS), two units of 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) and reactive –NH2 groups, was synthesized and characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, and 31P NMR. It was applied to modified conventional environmentally friendly E0 grade urea formaldehyde (UF) resin to prepare flame-retardant plywood. Two other POSS structure flame retardants were used for comparison. The results showed that the addition of bisDOPO-NH2-POSS flame retardant...

IMPROVING EXPLOSIVE BODY CAPACITY IN FEMALE SHORT TRACK SPEED SKATERS
Jianjun Li, Xinchao Ge & Yang Liu
ABSTRACT Introduction The peculiar characteristics of short track speed skating should be integrated into the psychology of competitions; it is considered that elite athletes engaged in this particular sport should have a healthy psychic condition. Objective Investigate the explosive power of female speed skaters in short track speed skating. Methods 10 key athletes from the national short track speed skating team were selected, and explosive power was tested by T-test, hexagonal test, and pro sensitivity...
IMPACTS OF PHYSICAL COORDINATION TRAINING ON SPEED IN SHORT TRACK SPEED SKATING
Xinchao Ge, Jianjun Li & Yang Liu
ABSTRACT Introduction Although the development time of short-track speed skating in China is relatively short, with the joint efforts of many athletes and coaches, the special technical level can be comparable with that of European and American countries. Objective Verify the impacts of physical coordination training on speed in short track speed skating. Methods Athletes from the provincial skating team were randomly selected and distributed into control and experimental groups to apply the training method...
