Data from: Transgender transitioning and change of self-reported sexual orientation

Matthias K. Auer, Johannes Fuss, Nina Hoehne, Günter K. Stalla, Caroline Sievers & Nina Höhne
Objective: Sexual orientation is usually considered to be determined in early life and stable in the course of adulthood. In contrast, some transgender individuals report a change in sexual orientation. A common reason for this phenomenon is not known. Methods: We included 115 transsexual persons (70 male-to-female “MtF” and 45 female-to-male “FtM”) patients from our endocrine outpatient clinic, who completed a questionnaire, retrospectively evaluating the history of their gender transition phase. The questionnaire focused on...

Statistical Learning for Individualized Asset Allocation

Yi Ding, Yingying Li & Rui Song
We establish a high-dimensional statistical learning framework for individualized asset allocation. Our proposed methodology addresses continuous-action decision-making with a large number of characteristics. We develop a discretization approach to model the effect of continuous actions and allow the discretization frequency to be large and diverge with the number of observations. We estimate the value function of continuous-action using penalized regression with our proposed generalized penalties that are imposed on linear transformations of the model coefficients....

Insulin sensitivity in mesolimbic pathways predicts and improves with weight loss in older dieters

Stefanie Brassen
Central insulin is involved in the regulation of hedonic feeding. Insulin resistance in overweight has recently been shown to reduce the inhibitory function of insulin in the human brain, but how this affects future weight management is unclear. Also unknown is the role of central insulin sensitivity on eating behavior of older people, who are highly vulnerable to hyperinsulinemia and in whom neural target systems of insulin action undergo age-related changes. Here, fifty overweight, pre-diabetic...

Data from: Pupil diameter tracks lapses of attention

Ruud L. Van Den Brink, Peter R. Murphy & Sander Nieuwenhuis
Our ability to sustain attention for prolonged periods of time is limited. Studies on the relationship between lapses of attention and psychophysiological markers of attentional state, such as pupil diameter, have yielded contradicting results. Here, we investigated the relationship between tonic fluctuations in pupil diameter and performance on a demanding sustained attention task. We found robust linear relationships between baseline pupil diameter and several measures of task performance, suggesting that attentional lapses tended to occur...

Data from: Biofilm morphotypes and population structure among Staphylococcus epidermidis from commensal and clinical samples

Harris, Rose Jeeves & Samuel K. Sheppard
Bacterial species comprise related genotypes that can display divergent phenotypes with important clinical implications. Staphylococcus epidermidis is a common cause of nosocomial infections and, critical to its pathogenesis, is its ability to adhere and form biofilms on surfaces, thereby moderating the effect of the host’s immune response and antibiotics. Commensal S. epidermidis populations are thought to differ from those associated with disease in factors involved in adhesion and biofilm accumulation. We quantified the differences in...

Long non-coding RNA PCAT1 drives clear cell renal cell carcinoma by upregulating YAP via sponging miR-656 and miR-539

Rui Wang, Bin Zheng, Hongyan Liu & Xiuxian Wan
Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is the most common RCC subtype with high metastasis, poor prognosis and conventional chemotherapy resistance. Prostate cancer associated transcript 1 (PCAT1) is an important lncRNA that was reported to be involved in cell proliferation, migration and invasion of several types of cancer cells. However, its role in ccRCC is still undetermined. This study found that PCAT1 levels were elevated in ccRCC tumors as well as several ccRCC cells, and...

Data from: Hedonic processing in humans is mediated by an opioidergic mechanism in a mesocorticolimbic system

Christian Buchel, Stephan Miedl & Christian Sprenger
It has been hypothesized that the pleasure of a reward in humans is mediated by an opioidergic system involving the hypothalamus, nucleus accumbens and the amygdala. Importantly, enjoying the pleasure of a reward is distinct from incentive salience induced by cues predicting the reward. We investigated this issue using a within subject, pharmacological challenge design with the opioid receptor antagonist naloxone and fMRI. Our data show that blocking opioid receptors reduced pleasure associated with viewing...

Response to fumaric acid esters for plaque type psoriasis in real-world practice is largely independent of patient characteristics at baseline – a multivariable regression analysis from the German Psoriasis Registry PsoBest

Kristian Reich, Ulrich Mrowietz, Christina Sorbe, Ralph von Kiedrowski, Sebastian Diemert, Lisa Schaeffer, Natalia Kirsten, Nesrine Ben-Anaya & Matthias Augustin
Fumaric acid esters (FAEs) are a well-established treatment option for long-term therapy of moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. This study examines effectiveness of FAEs for the treatment of plaque psoriasis in real-world practice at 12 months and if patient characteristics affect the odds of clinical response. A descriptive, multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted in a cohort drawn from the German registry PsoBest. Baseline patient characteristics were assessed as potential treatment effect modifiers. 444 patients...

Psychometric properties of the Questionnaire for Secondary Traumatization

Katharina Weitkamp, Judith K. Daniels & Fionna Klasen
During the past several years, there has been a growing interest in the negative effects that providing therapy may have on therapists. Of special interest is a phenomenon called secondary traumatization, which can arise while working with traumatized clients. To develop a simple screening tool for secondary traumatization, a quantitative assessment instrument was constructed using a data-driven approach based on qualitative interviews with affected trauma therapists as well as experienced supervisors in trauma therapy. The...

Data from: Catecholaminergic regulation of learning rate in a dynamic environment

Marieke Jepma, Peter R. Murphy, Matthew R. Nassar, Mauricio Rangel-Gomez, Martijn Meeter & Sander Nieuwenhuis
Adaptive behavior in a changing world requires flexibly adapting one’s rate of learning to the rate of environmental change. Recent studies have examined the computational mechanisms by which various environmental factors determine the impact of new outcomes on existing beliefs (i.e., the ‘learning rate’). However, the brain mechanisms, and in particular the neuromodulators, involved in this process are still largely unknown. The brain-wide neurophysiological effects of the catecholamines norepinephrine and dopamine on stimulus-evoked cortical responses...

Nature videos for PTSD: protocol for a mixed-methods feasibility study

Thiemo Knaust, Anna Felnhofer, Oswald David Kothgassner, Max Reinke, Matthew Browning, Helge Höllmer & Holger Schulz
Background: Given the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), particularly among military personnel, new treatment approaches are needed. One may be virtual relaxation interventions, especially 360-degree nature videos, since studies have demonstrated their relaxation effects for healthy participants. If these relaxation effects can be reproduced in patients with PTSD, they may offer a viable tool to reduce distress and hyperarousal. Objective: This research protocol describes a planned study that will examine the relaxation effects of...
