Evaluation of cytotoxicity and biodistribution of mesoporous carbon nanotubes (pristine/-OH/-COOH) to HepG2 cells in vitro and healthy mice in vivo

Yujing Du, Zhipei Chen, M. Irfan Hussain, Ping Yan, Chunli Zhang, Yan Fan, Lei Kang, Rongfu Wang, Jianhua Zhang, Xiaona Ren & Changchun Ge
Mesoporous carbon nanotubes (mCNTs) hold great promise interests, owing to their superior nano-platform properties for biomedicine. To fully utilize this potential, the toxicity and biodistribution of pristine and surface-modified mCNTs (-OH/-COOH) should preferentially be addressed. The results of cell viability suggested that pristine mCNTs induced cell death in a concentration-dependent manner. As evidence of reactive oxygen species (ROS), malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), pristine mCNTs induced noticeable redox imbalance. 99mTc tracing data suggested that...

Booster vaccination is required to elicit and maintain COVID-19 vaccine-induced immunity in SIV-infected macaques

Pingchao Li, Qian Wang, Yizi He, Chenchen Yang, Zhengyuan Zhang, Zijian Liu, Bo Liu, Li Yin, Yilan Cui, Peiyu Hu, Yichu Liu, Pingqian Zheng, Wei Wang, Linbing Qu, Caijun Sun, Suhua Guan, Liqiang Feng & Ling Chen
Prolonged infection and possible evolution of SARS-CoV-2 in patients living with uncontrolled HIV-1 infection highlight the importance of an effective vaccination regimen, yet the immunogenicity of COVID-19 vaccines and predictive immune biomarkers have not been well investigated. Herein, we report that the magnitude and persistence of antibody and cell-mediated immunity (CMI) elicited by an Ad5-vectored COVID-19 vaccine are impaired in SIV-infected macaques with high viral loads (> 105 genome copies per ml plasma, SIVhi) but...

It contains 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, and two ribosomal RNA genes. The gene content and organization of the mitogenome...

Genome-wide identification and expression analysis of the CHYR gene family in Phaseolus vulgaris under abiotic stress at the seeding stage

Xianxin Meng, Zhengong Yin, Guangdong Yang, Shuhong Wei, Yifan Guo, Wei Zhang & Qiang Wang
Really Interesting New Gene (RING) proteins are referred to as CHY zinc and ring finger protein (CHYR) members because they have the CHY domain, a type of protein that responds to abiotic stress. However, there are scant data on CHYR members in Phaseolus vulgaris (common bean). This study identified eight CHYR members (PvCHYRs) in the reference genome. A comprehensive analysis was performed to determine function, location, basic information, evolution, motifs, gene structure, cis-acting elements, collinearity,...

Liji Wu, Huasong Chen, Dima Chen, Shaopeng Wang, Ying Wu, Bing Wang, Shengen Liu, Linyan Yue, Jie Yu & Yongfei Bai
Understanding the effects of diversity on ecosystem stability in the context of global change has become an important goal of recent ecological research. However, the effects of diversity at multiple scales and trophic levels on ecosystem stability across environmental gradients remain unclear. Here, we conducted a field survey of α-, β-, and γ-diversity of plants and soil biota (bacteria, fungi, and nematodes) and estimated the temporal ecosystem stability of NDVI in 132 plots on the...

Silica aerogels: from materials research to industrial applications

Chengdong Li, Guihua Zhang, Liangliang Lin, Tingting Wu, Samuel Brunner, Sandra Galmarini, Jianting Bi, Wim J. Malfait, Shanyu Zhao & Kostya Ostrikov
Silica aerogels are advanced materials with outstanding properties, including high specific surface area and porosity, low thermal conductivity, density, dielectric constant, and refractive index. However, the excellent properties of silica aerogels have shown limited utility in industrial applications, primarily as thermal insulation materials, where they hold only a small (1.1–2.6%) market share. The emergence of clean energy technologies stimulated renewed interest in silica and other aerogels. Here the recent advances in the production and applications...

Rickettsia heilongjiangensis, a tick-borne obligate intracellular bacterium and causative agent of spotted fever in China, has attracted increasing concern regarding its capability in causing human rickettsiosis. Here, we conducted a genomic analysis of a new R. heilongjiangensis strain B8 (B8) isolated from the serum of a patient who had been bitten by a Haemaphysalis longicornis tick in Anhui Province, China. The present study sought to identify exclusive genes that might be associated with the pathogenicity...

Identification of geographic origins of Morus alba Linn. through surfaced enhanced Raman spectrometry and machine learning algorithms

Zhang-Wen Ma, Jia-Wei Tang, Qing-Hua Liu, Jing-Yi Mou, Rui Qiao, Yan Du, Chang-Yu Wu, Dao-Quan Tang & Liang Wang
The leaves of Morus alba Linn., which is also known as white mulberry, have been commonly used in many of traditional systems of medicine for centuries. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), mulberry leaf is mainly used for anti-diabetic purpose due to its enrichment in bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids and polysaccharides. However, these components are variable due to the different habitats of the mulberry plant. Therefore, geographic origin is an important feature because it...

Jiashun Zeng, Xiaoxia Liu, Jun Liu, Pengjia Wu & Lei Yang
Aim: This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the clinical value of calprotectin in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. Methods: The data regarding blood calprotectin levels in RA patients were retrieved from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane databases. Results: Thirty-one eligible articles were included. Calprotectin was increased in RA patients compared with healthy controls (mean difference [MD] = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.16–1.79). Calprotectin was positively associated with C-reactive protein (correlation coefficient [CC] = 0.58, 95% CI:...

Functional Outlier Detection for Density-Valued Data with Application to Robustify Distribution-to-Distribution Regression

Xinyi Lei, Zhicheng Chen & Hui Li
Distributional data analysis, concerned with the statistical analysis of data objects consisting of random probability distributions in the framework of functional data analysis (FDA), has received considerable interest in recent years and is increasingly applied in various fields including engineering. Outlier detection and robustness are of great practical interest; however, these aspects remain unexplored for distributional data. To this end, this study focuses on density-valued outlier detection and its application in robust distributional regression. Specifically,...

Development and validation of an LC-MS/MS method for pharmacokinetic study of lobetyolin in rats

Haitao Tian, Pan Zhao, Jing Li, Zhipeng Deng, Gaobin Pu & Hong Wang
Abstract A simple and selective liquid chromatography tandem with mass spectrometry (LC-MS/ MS) method for quantification of lobetyolin in rat plasma was developed and validated. Chromatographic separation was achieved on a Thermo ODS C18 reversed-phase column using 0.1% aqueous formic acid-methanol (50:50, v/v) in an isocratic elution mode at a flow rate of 0.4 mL.min-1. LC/MS performance was done in a positive ion ESI mode and the MS/MS transitions were monitored at m/z 419.3 [M+Na]+...
