Data from: Effect of soil pH increase by biochar on NO, N2O and N2 production during denitrification in acid soils

Alfred Obia, Gerard Cornelissen, Jan Mulder & Peter Dörsch
Biochar (BC) application to soil suppresses emission of nitrous- (N2O) and nitric oxide (NO), but the mechanisms are unclear. One of the most prominent features of BC is its alkalizing effect in soils, which may affect denitrification and its product stoichiometry directly or indirectly. We conducted laboratory experiments with anoxic slurries of acid Acrisols from Indonesia and Zambia and two contrasting BCs produced locally from rice husk and cacao shell. Dose-dependent responses of denitrification and...

Building deformation caused by tunnelling: centrifuge modelling

Stefan Ritter, Giorgia Giardina, Andrea Franza & Matthew DeJong
This paper investigates the deformation of buildings due to tunnelling-induced soil displacements. Centrifuge model tests of 3D printed building models subject to a plane-strain tunnel excavation in dense, dry sand are discussed. The small-scale structures replicate important building characteristics including brittle material properties similar to masonry, a realistic building layout, façade openings, strip footings and a rough soil-structure interface. Digital images were captured during the experiments, enabling image-based measurements of the building response. Results demonstrate...

Data from: Emissions and char quality of flame-curtain \"Kon Tiki\" kilns for farmer-scale charcoal/biochar production

Gerard Cornelissen, Naba Raj Pandit, Paul Taylor, Bishnu Pandit, Magnus Sparrevik & Hans Peter Schmidt
Pyrolysis of organic waste or woody materials yields charcoal, a stable carbonaceous product that can be used for cooking or mixed into soil, in the latter case often termed "biochar". Traditional kiln technologies often used for charcoal production are slow and without treatment of the pyrolysis gases, . This resultings in emissions of gases (mainly methane and carbon monoxide) and aerosols that are both toxic and contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, the most important being...

Data from: Biochar from \"Kon Tiki\" flame curtain and other kilns: effects of nutrient enrichment and kiln type on crop yield and soil chemistry

Naba Raj Pandit, Jan Mulder, Sarah Elisabeth Hale, Hans Peter Schmidt & Gerard Cornelissen
Biochar application to soils has been investigated as a means of improving soil fertility and mitigating climate change through soil carbon sequestration. In the present work, the invasive shrub "Eupatorium adenophorum" was utilized as a sustainable feedstock for making biochar under different pyrolysis conditions in Nepal. Biochar was produced using several different types of kilns; four sub types of flame curtain kilns (deep-cone metal kiln, steel shielded soil pit, conical soil pit and steel small...
