Functional beta diversity of New Zealand fishes: characterising morphological turnover along depth and latitude gradients, with derivation of functional bioregions
Elisabeth Myers, David Eme, Libby Liggins, Euan Harvey, Clive Roberts & Marti Anderson
Changes in the functional structures of communities are rarely examined along multiple large-scale environmental gradients. Here, we describe patterns in functional beta diversity for New Zealand marine fishes vs depth and latitude, including broad-scale delineation of functional bioregions. We derived eight functional traits related to food acquisition and locomotion and calculated complementary indices of functional beta diversity for 144 species of marine ray-finned fishes occurring along large-scale depth (50 - 1200 m) and latitudinal gradients...
Population abundance data and species range maps
Mathieu Chevalier, Olivier Broennimann & Antoine Guisan
Aim – The abundant-center hypothesis (ACH) predicts a negative relationship between species abundance and the distance to geographic range center. Since its formulation, empirical tests of the ACH have involved different settings (e.g. the distance to the ecological niche or to the geographic range center), but studies found contrasting support for this hypothesis. Here, we evaluate whether these discrepancies might stem from differences regarding the context in which the ACH is tested (geographical or environmental),...
Carbon dioxide flux and isotopic composition from sedimentary rock weathering, Draix-Bleone Critical Zone Observatory, France
G. Soulet, R.G. Hilton, M.H. Garnett & S. Klotz
The measurements and data contained here were obtained to study the release of carbon dioxide during the chemical weathering of sedimentary rocks. The primary aim of the research was to explore how these CO2 fluxes were related to environmental parameters (temperature, hydrology). Weathering of sedimentary rocks can result in CO2 release from the oxidation of rock organic carbon oxidation, but also due to the oxidation of sulfide minerals, production of sulfuric acid and subsequent release...
Species ecology explains the various spatial components of genetic diversity in tropical reef fishes

Generating genomic data for 19 tropical reef fish species of the Western Indian Ocean, we investigate how species ecology influences genetic diver- sity patterns from local to regional scales. We distinguish between the α, β and γ components of genetic diversity, which we subsequently link to six ecological traits. We find that the α and γ components of genetic diversity are strongly correlated so that species with a high total regional genetic diversity display systematically...
Changes in foraging mode caused by a decline in prey size have major bioenergetic consequences for a small pelagic fish

Global warming is causing profound modifications of aquatic ecosystems and one major outcome appears to be a decline in adult size of many fish species. Over the last decade, sardine populations in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean Sea) have shown severe declines in body size and condition as well as disappearance of the oldest individuals, which could not be related to overfishing, predation pressure, or epizootic diseases. In this study, we investigated whether this...

Transmissible cancers are parasitic malignant cell lineages that acquired the ability to infect new hosts from the same species, or sometimes related species. First described in dogs and Tasmanian devils, transmissible cancers were later discovered in some marine bivalves affected by a leukemia-like disease. In Mytilus mussels, two lineages of Bivalve Transmissible Neoplasia (BTN), both emerged in a M. trossulus founder individual, have been described to date (MtrBTN1 and MtrBTN2). Here, we performed an extensive...
Environmental DNA metabarcoding to monitor tropical reef fishes in Providencia island
Camille Albouy, Polanco Andrea & Pellissier Loïc
Environmental DNA (eDNA) provides a revolutionary method to monitor species in marine ecosystems from animal DNA present in the water. Examining the capacity of eDNA to provide accurate biodiversity measures in species-rich ecosystems such as coral reefs is a prerequisite for their long-term monitoring. Here, we surveyed a Colombian tropical marine reefs, Providencia Island using eDNA method. We collected a large quantity of surface water (30 L per filter) above the reefs and applied a...
