Skin swabbing protocol to collect DNA samples from small-bodied fish species

William Norton
Fish species are commonly used as experimental models in the laboratory. DNA is routinely collected from these animals to permit identification of their genotype. The current standard procedure to sample DNA is fin clipping, which involves anaesthetising individuals and removing a portion of the caudal fin. While fin clipping reliably generates good quality DNA samples for downstream applications, there is evidence that it can alter health and welfare, leading to infection and impacting on the...

Corine land cover 2012 (revised) for the UK, Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey

B. Cole, B. De La Barreda, A. Hamer, T. Codd, M. Payne, L. Chan, G. Smith & H. Balzter
This dataset is the 2012 revised Corine Land Cover (CLC) map, consisting of 44 classes in the hierarchical three level Corine nomenclature, produced during the CLC2018 production to improve the CLC2012 inventory. CLC 2018, CLC change 2012-2018 and CLC 2012 revised are three of the datasets produced within the frame of the Copernicus programme on land monitoring. Corine Land Cover (CLC) provides consistent information on land cover and land cover changes across Europe; these two...

Data from: A Silurian ophiuroid with soft tissue preservation

Reece Carter, Mark Sutton, Derek Briggs, David Siveter & Derek Siveter
Palaeozoic brittle stars are not equipped with the fused arm ossicles (vertebrae) that facilitate the remarkable mode of walking that characterizes living forms. Here we describe a stem ophiuroid from the Herefordshire Lagerstätte (Silurian, Wenlock Series) which is remarkable in preserving the body cavity uncompacted and long tube feet which lack suckers. We tentatively assign the specimen to Protaster. The morphology of the arms and attitude of the specimen suggest that locomotion was achieved by...

Urination data for Welsh Mountain ewes grazing upland and lowland pastures in North Wales, 2016

K.A. Marsden, L. Lush, J.A. Holmberg, M.J. Whelan, A.J. King, R.P. Wilson, A.F. Charteris, L.M. Cardenas, D.L. Jones & D.R. Chadwick
The data contains urination metrics including frequency, volume, chemical composition, estimated urine patch N loading rates and metabolomics profile of individual urine events from sheep (Welsh Mountain ewe) grazing a semi-improved upland pasture and a lowland improved pasture located in North Wales, UK. Urine collection studies were run in the spring, summer and autumn of 2016 for the semi-improved site and in autumn of 2016 on the lowland improved pasture. Sheep were housed in urine...

Home-based exercise for people living with frailty and chronic kidney disease: a mixed-methods pilot randomised controlled trial

Andrew Nixon, Theodoros Bampouras, Helen Gooch, Hannah Young, Kenneth Finlayson, Neil Pendleton, Sandip Mitra, Mark Brady & Ajay Dhaygude
Background and Aims: Frailty is highly prevalent in adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is associated with adverse health outcomes. However, exercise training may improve physical function leading to associated improvements in outcomes. The EX-FRAIL CKD trial (ISRCTN87708989) aimed to inform the design of a randomised controlled trial (RCT) that investigates the efficacy of a progressive home-based exercise programme in pre-frail and frail older adults with CKD. Methods: Patients aged ≥65 years with CKD...

Wild bee abundance and species richness, survey data from Leighfield Forest, Leicestershire and Rutland, 2020

J. Szczur, M. Rayner & C. Stoate
This dataset contains records on the abundance and species richness of wild bees along transects in ten 1x1 km survey squares of the Leighfield forest region of Leicestershire and Rutland, UK collected in the Spring and Summer of 2020. The dataset also contains a 10 m resolution raster land cover map of the survey sites and spatially referenced GIS files of the survey transect paths. The work was carried out by the data authors to...

The first Silurian trilobite with three-dimensionally preserved soft parts reveals novel appendage morphology

Mark Sutton, Derek Siveter, Richard Fortey, Derek Briggs & David Siveter
The first Silurian trilobite known with soft parts preserved, a Dalmanites species, is described from the Herefordshire Lagerstätte. Biramous appendages and much of the alimentary system are evident. High-fidelity three-dimensional preservation reveals a novel, double arrangement of the exopod filaments, interconnected by a presumed membranous sheet. This morphology explains a misinterpretation of the exopod as supporting spiral structures, originally reported nearly 150 years ago. The new exopod morphology is considered primarily respiratory in function and...
