Functional Outlier Detection for Density-Valued Data with Application to Robustify Distribution-to-Distribution Regression

Xinyi Lei, Zhicheng Chen & Hui Li
Distributional data analysis, concerned with the statistical analysis of data objects consisting of random probability distributions in the framework of functional data analysis (FDA), has received considerable interest in recent years and is increasingly applied in various fields including engineering. Outlier detection and robustness are of great practical interest; however, these aspects remain unexplored for distributional data. To this end, this study focuses on density-valued outlier detection and its application in robust distributional regression. Specifically,...

The emerging COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection poses severe challenges to global public health. Serum antibody testing is becoming one of the critical methods for the diagnosis of COVID-19 patients. We investigated IgM and IgG responses against SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid (N) and spike (S) protein after symptom onset in the intensive care unit (ICU) and non-ICU patients. 130 blood samples from 38 COVID-19 patients were collected. The levels of IgM and IgG specific to N and...

The association between social resources and depression among female migrants affected by domestic violence

Pan Teng, Brian J. Hall & Ling Li
Interpersonal violence (IPV) is associated with higher risk of depression. Female Chinese rural-to-urban migrants may experience greater depression following exposure to IPV due to lack of social support and integration within their receiving communities. The current study estimated the prevalence of IPV among rural-to-urban migrants in Guangzhou, China, and evaluated the moderating effects of social resources on migrant's depression symptoms. We recruited 1,368 women (1,003 migrants and 365 local-born) of childbearing age from population and...

Data for: Both Conifer II and Gnetales are characterized by a high frequency of ancient mitochondrial gene transfer to the nuclear genome

Sheng-Long Kan, Ting-Ting Shen, Jin-Hua Ran & Xiao-Quan Wang
Background: Mitochondrial gene transfer/loss is common in land plants, and therefore the fate of missing mitochondrial genes has attracted more and more attention. The gene content of gymnosperm mitochondria varies greatly, supplying a system for studying the evolutionary fate of missing mitochondrial genes. Results: Here we studied the tempo and pattern of mitochondrial gene loss/transfer in gymnosperms represented by all 13 families, using high-throughput sequencing of both DNA and cDNA. All 41 mitochondrial protein-coding genes...

Longitudinal association between dietary protein intake and survival in peritoneal dialysis patients

Shu-Hong Bi, Xiaoxiao Wang, Wen Tang, Tao Wang, Baohua Li & Chunyan Su
Decreased dietary protein intake (DPI) may lead to protein-energy malnutrition and may be associated with increased mortality risk. We hypothesized that longitudinal changes in dietary protein intake have independent associations with survival in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. 668 stable PD patients were selected in the study from January 2006 to January 2018 and were followed up until December 2019. Their three-day dietary records were collected at the baseline (the sixth month after PD) and thereafter...

Prolonged infection and possible evolution of SARS-CoV-2 in patients living with uncontrolled HIV-1 infection highlight the importance of an effective vaccination regimen, yet the immunogenicity of COVID-19 vaccines and predictive immune biomarkers have not been well investigated. Herein, we report that the magnitude and persistence of antibody and cell-mediated immunity (CMI) elicited by an Ad5-vectored COVID-19 vaccine are impaired in SIV-infected macaques with high viral loads (> 105 genome copies per ml plasma, SIVhi) but...

Niclosamide is a potential candidate for the treatment of chemo-resistant osteosarcoma

Xiaoling Huang, Wei Wang & Yong Li
Abstract Chemotherapy is the main treatment option for advanced osteosarcoma, which is the most common type of primary bone malignancy. However, patients develop resistance rapidly and many succumb to the disease. Niclosamide, an anthelmintic drug, has been recently identified to display potent and selective anti-cancer activity. In this work, we show that niclosamide at sub-micromolar concentrations inhibits proliferation and migration, and induces apoptosis in both parental and chemo-resistant osteosarcoma cells, with much less toxicity in...

Structural insight into TIPE1 functioning as a lipid transfer protein

Sujian Cao, Ye Zhang, Haoqian Jiang, Xuben Hou & Wei Wang
As a member of the tumor necrosis factor-α-induced protein 8 (TNFAIP8/TIPE) family, TIPE1 has been found to be associated with many cellular signaling pathways in regulating apoptosis, autophagy, and tumorigenesis. However, the position of TIPE1 in the signaling network remains elusive. Here we present the crystal structure of zebrafish TIPE1 in complex with phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) at a resolution of 1.38 Å. By comparison with structures of other three TIPE family proteins, a universal phospholipid-binding mode...
