Complement receptor 3 (CD11b/CD18) is an important receptor that mediates adhesion, phagocytosis and chemotaxis in various immunocytes. The conidia of the medically-important pathogenic fungus, Aspergillus fumigatus can be internalized into alveolar epithelial cells to disseminate its infection in immunocompromised host; however, the role of CR3 in this process is poorly understood. In the present study, we investigated the potential role of CR3 on A. fumigatus internalization into type II alveolar epithelial cells and its effect...

Angiopoietin-like protein 8, molecular cloning and regulating lipid accumulation in goat intramuscular preadipocytes

Wei Huang, Yaqiu Lin, Hua Xiang, Jiangjiang Zhu & Yong Wang
This study aimed to clone the full-length open reading frame (ORF) of goat ANGPTL8 gene sequence, reveal its molecular and expression characteristics, and explore its effect on the differentiation of goat intramuscular preadipocytes. The full-length ORF sequence of goat ANGPTL8 gene was cloned by RT-PCR technology, and bioinformatics analysis was performed by related biological software. RT-qPCR was used to detect the expression of ANGPTL8 mRNA in goat tissues. Further use of RNA interference to study...

An analysis of the optimal intrusion force of the maxillary central incisor with root horizontal resorption using the finite element method and curve fitting

Xin Zhang, Min-Qi Li, Jie Guo, Heng-Wei Yang, Jian Yu & Guo-Ju Li
There are no studies on the optimal intrusion force in orthodontic patients with the existing root resorption (RR). The study aimed to analyze the optimal intrusion force for central incisors with existing horizontal root resorption using the finite element method (FEM). We calculated the optimal intrusion force using the finite element method and curve fitting. We found that with the increase of the maxillary central incisor’s root horizontal resorption length, the optimal intrusion force interval’s...

Removal of harmful algae by Shigella sp. H3 and Alcaligenes sp. H5: algicidal pathways and characteristics

Gang Xue, Xiaonuan Wang, Chenlan Xu, Binxue Song & Hong Chen
Application of algicidal bacteria is a promising technology to control harmful algal blooms (HABs). In this study, algicidal bacteria strains Shigella sp. H3 and Alcaligenes sp. H5 were obtained via two different isolation methods from the same lake water sample, with optimal algicidal efficiencies 96% and 74% against algae mixture. The Shigella sp. H3 and Alcaligenes sp. H5 lysed algae cells through cells-to-cells direct contact and secretion of algicidal metabolites, respectively. The stronger algicidal capability...

The demulsification of oily wastewater by a hyperbranched polymer grafted SiO2

Yu Zhang, Jiazhe Kuang, Bin Li, Yuanzhu Mi, Ying Yang & Xuening Feng
In this work, a PAMAM@SiO2 demulsifier was synthesized by the reaction of a hyperbranched poly (amido amine) (PAMAM) and KH570 modified SiO2. The structure, morphology and composition of PAMAM@SiO2 were characterized by FT-IR, SEM and EDS. The effect of the concentration of PAMAM@SiO2, salinity and temperature on the demulsification performance was systematically studied. The results showed that the transmittance of aqueous phase after demulsification could reach as high as 92.1% at optimal conditions, and corresponding...

The present study investigated the therapeutic effects of the curcumin derivative 3-[(1E)-2-(1H-indol-6-yl)ethenyl]-5-[(1E)-2-[2-methoxy-4-(2-pyridylmethoxy)phenyl]ethenyl]-1H-pyrazole (GT863) in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The inhibitory effect of GT863 on superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) aggregation was evaluated in cell-free assays. GT863 interfered with the conformational changes of the SOD1 protein and later, oligomeric aggregation. Furthermore, its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects were evaluated in cell-free and cultured cell assays. GT863 inhibited H2O2− and glutamate-induced cytotoxicity and activated an antioxidant responsive element...

Bismuth-doped g-C3N4/ZIF-8 heterojunction photocatalysts with enhanced photocatalytic performance under visible light illumination

Qian Yang, Wensong Lin, Zhichang Duan, Sen Xu, Junnan Chen & Xin Mai
In this work, g-C3N4/ZIF-8 heterojunction photocatalysts were synthesized by the process which the metal organic framework ZIF-8 nanoparticles were grown onto the g-C3N4 layer in situ. Bismuth element was doped into the as-prepared g-C3N4/ZIF-8 material and new type of Bi@g-C3N4/ZIF-8 composite photocatalysts were manufactured, in which the doping element acts in adjusting the band gap in the photocatalysts. The prepared photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, FESEM, TEM, FTIR, XPS, UV-Vis DRS, photoluminescence and photo-electrochemical experiments....
