Removal of harmful algae by Shigella sp. H3 and Alcaligenes sp. H5: algicidal pathways and characteristics

Gang Xue, Xiaonuan Wang, Chenlan Xu, Binxue Song & Hong Chen
Application of algicidal bacteria is a promising technology to control harmful algal blooms (HABs). In this study, algicidal bacteria strains Shigella sp. H3 and Alcaligenes sp. H5 were obtained via two different isolation methods from the same lake water sample, with optimal algicidal efficiencies 96% and 74% against algae mixture. The Shigella sp. H3 and Alcaligenes sp. H5 lysed algae cells through cells-to-cells direct contact and secretion of algicidal metabolites, respectively. The stronger algicidal capability...

Angiopoietin-like protein 8, molecular cloning and regulating lipid accumulation in goat intramuscular preadipocytes

Wei Huang, Yaqiu Lin, Hua Xiang, Jiangjiang Zhu & Yong Wang
This study aimed to clone the full-length open reading frame (ORF) of goat ANGPTL8 gene sequence, reveal its molecular and expression characteristics, and explore its effect on the differentiation of goat intramuscular preadipocytes. The full-length ORF sequence of goat ANGPTL8 gene was cloned by RT-PCR technology, and bioinformatics analysis was performed by related biological software. RT-qPCR was used to detect the expression of ANGPTL8 mRNA in goat tissues. Further use of RNA interference to study...

Temporal and Spatial Characteristics of Flocculated Suspended Solids in a Deep Reservoir: an in situ Observation in the Biliuhe Reservoir

Yuyu Liu, Yuqing Feng, Xin Jiang, Shiguo Xu, Lin Zhu & Guoqing Sang
The amount of total suspended solids (TSS) is the most visible indicator for evaluating water quality in reservoirs. Previous investigations paid more attention to TSS of the surface layer in reservoirs, while suspended particles are prone to settle, resuspend, and aggregate at the bottom of reservoir. There may be different patterns of the TSS in different depths. Hence, it is significant to explore the temporal and spatial characteristics of suspended solids in different depths of...

A new diterpenoid alkaloid from Delphinium gyalanum C. Marquand & Airy Shaw

Xinyu Li, Meizhen Ye, Feng Gao, Xianli Zhou, Lin Chen & Shuai Huang
A new C19-diterpenoid alkaloid named gyalanutine A (1) and fourteen known compounds 2-15 were isolated from the plant of Delphinium gyalanum C. Marquand & Airy Shaw. Compound 1 displayed an unusual lycoctonine-type C19-diterpenoid alkaloid skeleton with the cleavage of N-C19 and C7-C17 bonds, and the construction of the N-C7 bond. Structures were identified by multiple spectroscopic analyses including 1 D, 2 D NMR, IR and HR-ESI-MS. Compounds were tested for acetylcholinesterase inhibitory and anti-inflammatory activity.

Block-wise Variable Selection for Clustering via Latent States of Mixture Models

Beomseok Seo, Lin Lin & Jia Li
Mixture modeling is a major paradigm for clustering in statistics. In this paper, we develop a new block-wise variable selection method for clustering by exploiting the latent states of the hidden Markov model on variable blocks or the Gaussian mixture model. The variable blocks are formed by depth-first-search on a dendrogram created based on the mutual information between any pair of variables. It is demonstrated that the latent states of the variable blocks together with...

Chemical composition characteristics and source analysis of PM2.5 in Jiaxing, China: Insights into the effect of COVID-19 outbreak

Chuanfang Xiong, Yinglong Zhang, Jing Yan, Xiaoxia Yang, Qiongzhen Wang, Rui Tu & Yi He
Jiaxing is a medium-sized city in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), which showed complex local and surrounding pollution sources. To study the COVID-19 impact on the ambient PM2.5 in Jiaxing, we collected the PM2.5 samples from January 2 to April 25, 2020 and analyzed their chemical compositions (including carbon components, water-soluble ions (WSIs), and inorganic elements). The concentration of PM2.5 was 83.13 ± 30.93 μg/m3 before COVID-19 pandemic, and then remarkably decreased with COVID-19 outbreak...

The Reinforcement of Sludge-Recycling Enhanced Flocculation by the Acid Activation of Settled Sludge

Wei Wei, Lin Sheng, Haoyang Gong, Dong Zhou, Xinli Cai & Shuguang Zhu
Sludge-recycling enhanced flocculation (SEF) is an effective method for enhancing flocculation. In the conventional SEF process, the settled sludge is recirculated into the flocculation process without any further treatment. However, studies have shown that the efficacy of the SEF process could be improved by pre-treating the sludge. In this work, the acid activation of sludge was performed using a range of pH values (1.0 – 6.0) and charge states, with and without long-chain bridging. The...

Amniotic fluid and urine metabolomic alterations associated with pregnant women with Down syndrome fetuses

Xiaohang Chen, Liang Hu, Jinjiang Su, Xiaoyi Liu, Xiaojin Luo, Yuanyuan Pei, Yushan Gao & Fengxiang Wei
Down syndrome (DS) is a chromosomal disorder caused by a third copy of all or part of chromosome 21. Clinical observations and preclinical studies both suggest that DS may be associated with significant metabolic and bioenergetic alterations. But the metabolic alterations in pregnant women carrying DS fetuses still remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the characteristic metabolomics and lipidomics changes during fetal development of DS. The AF and random urine specimens were selected from...
