Nickel hyperaccumulation, elemental profiles and agromining potential of three species of Odontarrhena from the ultramafics of Western Iran

Mohammad Ghafoori, Mansour Shariati, Antony van der Ent & Alan J. M. Baker
The profiles of trace and major elements in three Odontarrhena species from the ultramafics of Western Iran (O. callichroa, O. penjwinensis and O. inflata) were evaluated to provide detailed information on their soil-plant relationships and potentials for agromining. The mean concentrations of Ni in leaf dry matter of these three species were 877, 3,270 and 2,720 mg kg−1, respectively. The mean concentrations of total soil Ni at sites Mazi Ban, Kamyaran and Ghala Ga were...

Since 2009, the AuSCR has provided national data on consecutive patients admitted to hospital with acute stroke or TIA, which has been used to inform improvements to the health system.
In 2021, 62 hospitals contributed data to the AuSCR. Information is presented from...

Matrix shapes and calculations behind standard artificial neural networks

Ger Post
This educational tool developed at the University of Melbourne aims to give students a better understanding of the Python code for artificial neural networks and the matrix shapes and calculations behind that code. For each step through the artificial neural network (both the forward pass and back propagation) the corresponding code is given. Students are asked to write down for each step the dimensions of the matrix calculations, before checking their answers (correct answers are...

Efficacy and safety of novel-targeted drugs in the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension: a Bayesian network meta-analysis

Wenhai Fu, Wenjun He, Yuexin Li, Yangxiao Chen, Jingyi Liang, Hui Lei, Lin Fu, Yanghang Chen, Ni Ren, Qian Jiang, Yi Shen, Ran Ma, Tao Wang, Xinni Wang, Nuofu Zhang, Dakai Xiao & Chunli Liu
Background: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a severe and fatal clinical syndrome characterized by high blood pressure and vascular remodeling in the pulmonary arterioles, which is also a rapidly progressing disease of the lung vasculature with a poor prognosis. Although PAH medication made great advances in recent years, the efficacy and safety of the medication are unsatisfactory. Therefore, we aimed to update and expand previous studies to explore the efficacy and safety of PAH-targeted medications....

Logistical flows, frictions, and ‘contact zones’

Louis Cyuzuzo
With the rise of US-China tensions in recent years, logistical chokepoints such as the Suez Canal are yet again central to geopolitical rivalry. While more minor actors are unable to exert significant influence over the organization of global supply chains, US-China tensions offer opportunities for hedging that had been drastically reduced at the end of the Cold War, as the author discusses in Panama and Djibouti.

A study to determine suitable and robust intensity measures for reinforced concrete slab subjected to fire

Akshay Baheti, David Lange & Vasant Matsagar
Performance-based structural design is still in a comparatively developmental phase for fire hazard when compared to that of, for example, earthquake excitation. Addressing a significant weakness in performance-based design for fire, the present study aims to propose appropriate intensity measures (IM) for a fire hazard that has a robust correlation with certain engineering demand parameter (EDP) and which may subsequently be linked to the damage / loss estimation a priori, in a structure subjected to...

Blended Synchronous Learning Guide

James Thompson & James Helal
Blended Synchronous Learning (BSL) is a Teaching and Learning Activity Type, whereby the same teaching and learning activities are experienced by all students at the same time, with some students face-to-face and others online.
The BSL Guide includes a taxonomy of four BSL approaches, based on consultations with teaching staff in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning (ABP) at the University of Melbourne. These include: BSL in a BSL Room, Livestreamed Sessions, Distributed...
