What Ails Italy: The Competitive Issue of the Italian State

DOMENICO DE MARTINIS
Italy faces a most challenging global financial and economic crisis since the end of World War II. For an economy that grew at a rapid pace between the 1950’s and the 1980’s, Italy has seen slower growth in the last twenty years. Italian policymakers are facing a series of problems that include a contracting gross domestic product (GDP), large unemployment, especially among its young people, high government deficits, large governmental borrowing along with high interest...

Baohuoside-I suppresses cell proliferation and migration by up-regulating miR-144 in melanoma

Ya-Guang Peng & Li Zhang
Context: Baohuoside-I was reported to induce apoptosis in non-small-cell lung cancer and inhibit the growth of multiple myeloma cells. The antitumour potential of baohuoside-I has not been demonstrated in melanoma yet. Objective: To investigate the potential antitumour activity of baohuoside-I against melanoma and elucidate its underlying molecular mechanism. Materials and methods: Cell viability was evaluated by MTT assay. The malignant invasion capacity was measured with trans-well assay. The relative expression change of microRNAs was profiled...

Magnetic-nanoparticles-based fluorescent immunoassay for individual and simultaneous determination of dichlorvos and paraoxon in milk

Marina Yaneva, Yavor Ivanov, Nikola Todorov & Tzonka Godjevargova
A sensitive and rapid magnetic-nanoparticles-based fluorescent immunoassay (MNPs-FIA) for individual and simultaneous determination of dichlorvos (DDVP) and paraoxon in untreated raw milk was developed. The conjugates DDVP–cBSA (cationized bovine serum albumin) and paraoxon–BSA (bovine serum albumin) were labeled by fluorescent dyes. The optimal amount of immobilized polyclonal anti-DDVP and anti-paraoxon antibodies on MNPs (0.375 mg Ab-MNPs) and optimal concentrations of DDVP–cBSA–FITC (18 µg/mL) and paraoxon–BSA–FITC (22 µg/mL) for MNPs-FIA were determined. The calibration curves of...

A novel variable antibody fragment dimerized by the dHLX peptide with enhanced affinity against amantadine compared to its corresponding scFv antibody

Sanlei Xie, Kai Wen, Tao Peng, Jianyi Wang, Kai Yao & Haiyang Jiang
Amantadine (AMA) is an illegally used antiviral drug in the poultry industry, it is necessary to establish a fast, accurate and time-saving detection method for poultry food. The antibody-based immunoassay can achieve fast and accurate requirements. We developed a recombinant antibody-based specificity immunoassay for AMA. In the recombinant antibody, the heavy chain variable region (VH) is connected covalently with the light chain variable region (VL) by the artificial linker. Here, two recombinant antibodies’ single-chain variable...

Public health impact of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine infant immunization programs: assessment of invasive pneumococcal disease burden and serotype distribution

Patricia Izurieta, Priti Bahety, Richard Adegbola, Christopher Clarke & Bernard Hoet
Introduction Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) impact studies have reported substantial reductions in the incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) after implementation of childhood PCV programs. Heterogeneity in surveillance systems, local epidemiology and PCV programs hampers comparisons between studies. We aimed to better understand the impact of childhood PCV programs on overall IPD and serotype distribution. Areas covered We analyzed the impact of PCV programs on the incidence of overall IPD, and the distribution of vaccine...

Molecular dynamics simulations of apo and holo forms of fatty acid binding protein 5 and cellular retinoic acid binding protein II reveal highly mobile protein, retinoic acid ligand, and water molecules

Nathanael H. Hunter, Blair C. Bakula & Chrystal D. Bruce
Structural and dynamic properties from a series of 300 ns molecular dynamics, MD, simulations of two intracellular lipid binding proteins, iLBPs, (Fatty Acid Binding Protein 5, FABP5, and Cellular Retinoic Acid Binding Protein II, CRABP-II) in both the apo form and when bound with retinoic acid reveal a high degree of protein and ligand flexibility. The ratio of FABP5 to CRABP-II in a cell may determine whether it undergoes natural apoptosis or unrestricted cell growth...

Some critics have accused philosophical phenomenology of being dry, abstract and ‘airy fairy’, whereas for many phenomenologists, it is anything but - revealing ‘earthy’, sweaty, fleshy, sensuous corporealities. The purpose of this chapter is to explore some of the ways in which phenomenology as methodology has challenged, and can be applied to challenge, taken-for-granted assumptions, and to generate rich, evocative and detailed insights into the domain of sport and...

Digital Research Report: The Landscape of Climate Research Funding

Digital Science, Daniel Hook, Jonathan Adams, Martin Szomszor & Dimensions Support Team
The USA government proposes policy and funding changes around environmental protection and climate research. As is often the case, it will be difficult to assess the impact until years after the policy has been enacted. However, funding data provide us with a more proximate bellwether than the traditional research analytics. In this report, we profile the balance of ‘climate research’ investment and note its impact on a diverse research portfolio that runs from ecology and...

Digital Research Report: Discovery and Analysis of Global Research Trends Using GRID

Digital Science, Martin Szomszor & Jonathan Adams
In this report we explore the question of 'location' and, in particular, how we consistently identify the organisations that host and facilitate the research process. Using a corpus of sample research articles from the leading open-access journal PLOS ONE, we demonstrate how much attribution to research organisations varies in author affiliations, how this kind of data can be aligned with a reference dataset (GRID), and the potential of analyses resulting from the data integration.

The Connected Culture of Collaboration Report

Digital Science, John Hammersley, Ian Calvert & Daniel Hook
A selection of analyses and articles about collaborative scholarly writing, curated by Overleaf.Overleaf, a collaborative writing and publishing platform that makes the process of writing, editing and publishing academic papers quicker and easier, has released this report which takes an in-depth look at active collaborative research patterns. Rather than examining post-published collaboration patterns, “The Connected Culture of Collaboration” explores new, real-time information on collaboration to provide insights on collaboration patterns on national, state and institution-level...
