Cultural influences on perception of disability and disabled people: a comparison of opinions from students in the United Kingdom (UK) Pakistan (PAK) about a generic wheelchair using a semantic differential scale

Salman Asghar, George Edward Torrens & Robert Harland
Assistive Technology (AT) product use occurs within a socio-cultural setting. The growth internationally in the AT product market suggests that designers need to be aware of the influences that diverse cultures may have on the societal perception of an AT product through its semantic attributes. The study aimed to evaluate the visual interaction with an AT product by young adults from Pakistan, a collectivist society, and the United Kingdom (UK), an individualist society. A paper-based...

A review of gait disorders in the elderly and neurological patients for robot-assisted training

Asim Ghaffar, Abbas A. Dehghani-Sanij & Sheng Quan Xie
Purpose: Ambulation is an important objective for people with pathological gaits. Exoskeleton robots can assist these people to complete their activities of daily living. There are exoskeletons that have been presented in literature to assist the elderly and other pathological gait users. This article presents a review of the degree of support required in the elderly and neurological gait disorders found in the human population. This will help to advance the design of robot-assisted devices...

Memorandum of Understanding Template for Open Educational Resources (OER) Projects

Clarke Iakovakis
Open Educational Resource (OER) authoring projects demand a high level of organization and planning, ideally as early in the project as possible. A memorandum of understanding (MOU) is a flexible agreement between parties to establish the outcomes, tasks, and timetables of a project. The MOU Template for OER Authoring Projects is intended for use by libraries and prospective OER authors, allowing each partner to think through their objectives, needs, and contributions, in order to reach...

Sorafenib-loaded hydroxyethyl starch-TG100-115 micelles for the treatment of liver cancer based on synergistic treatment

Guofei Li & Limei Zhao
Tumor microenvironment is closely related to the occurrence and development of liver cancer. Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are an important part of tumor microenvironment promoting tumor deterioration and metastasis by inhibiting immune cells. Previous studies showed that PI3Kγ inhibitor could reverse the phenotype of TAMs, relieve immunosuppression and sensitize chemotherapy drugs, suggesting that the combination of PI3Kγ inhibitor and chemotherapeutics is likely to bring new breakthroughs in the treatment of liver cancer. Based on it, this...

Photodynamic therapy – hypericin tetraether liposome conjugates and their antitumor and antiangiogenic activity

Nikola Plenagl, Lili Duse, Benjamin Sebastian Seitz, Nathalie Goergen, Shashank Reddy Pinnapireddy, Jarmila Jedelska, Jana Brüßler & Udo Bakowsky
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an established noninvasive tumor treatment. The hydrophobic natural occurring pigment hypericin shows a lot of attractive properties for the application in PDT. Hence, the administration to biological systems or patients requires the formulation in drug carriers enabling sufficient bioavailability. Therefore, free hypericin was encapsulated by the thin film hydration method or a hypericin-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex (Hyp-HPβCD) was incorporated by dehydration-rehydration vesicle method in either conventional or ultra-stable tetraether lipid (TEL) liposomes....

Surface-engineered polyethyleneimine-modified liposomes as novel carrier of siRNA and chemotherapeutics for combination treatment of drug-resistant cancers

Livia P. Mendes, Can Sarisozen, Ed Luther, Jiayi Pan & Vladimir P. Torchilin
Modification of nanoparticle surfaces with PEG has been widely considered the gold standard for many years. However, PEGylation presents controversial and serious challenges including lack of functionality, hindered cellular interaction, allergic reactions, and stimulation of IgM production after repetitive dosing that accelerates blood clearance of the nanoparticles. We report the development of novel liposomal formulations surface-modified with a low molecular weight, branched polyethyleneimine (bPEI)–lipid conjugate for use as an alternative to PEG. The formulations had...

Transient blood–brain barrier disruption is induced by low pulsed electrical fields in vitro: an analysis of permeability and trans-endothelial electric resistivity

The blood–brain barrier (BBB) is limiting transcellular and paracellular movement of molecules and cells, controls molecular traffic, and keeps out toxins. However, this protective function is the major hurdle for treating brain diseases such as brain tumors, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, etc. It was previously demonstrated that high pulsed electrical fields (PEFs) can disrupt the BBB by inducing electroporation (EP) which increases the permeability of the transcellular route. Our goal was to study the effects...

Defining Functional Therapy in Research Involving Children with Cerebral Palsy: A Systematic Review

Mellanie Geijen, Marjolijn Ketelaar, Leanne Sakzewski, Robert Palisano & Eugene Rameckers
Aim: To review definitions and elements of interventions in studies, which used the word “functional” to describe their intervention for children with cerebral palsy (CP), and to determine whether definitions and elements are similar to criteria of functional therapy described in the Dutch Guidelines. Methods: Systematic review of intervention studies, which used the word “functional” to describe interventions for children with CP. We described criteria of functional therapy that were used to describe the intervention,...

Feeding of an Amazonian splash tetra (Lebiasinidae)

Bruno Soares & Naraiana Benone
We provide supplementary information, R functions and dataset supporting the paper "Do local environmental factors structure the trophic niche of the splash tetra Copella arnoldi? A test in an Amazonian stream system", submitted to the journal Acta Amazonica.
Data.xls comprises dietary information of all specimens that exhibited gut contents and dietary indices of splash tetra Copella arnoldi in 20 Amazonian streams, with related environmental conditions (stream's width and depth, flow velocity and canopy opening).
nmds.tiff provides a...

Muscle activity in throwing with the dominant and non-dominant arm

Johann P. Kuhtz-Buschbeck & Patrick Keller
Muscle activation patterns of the dominant and non-dominant arm were compared during two unconstrained throwing tasks (dart throws, underhand throws). Electromyographic (EMG) signals were recorded from shoulder (anterior and posterior deltoid), upper arm (biceps and triceps brachii) and hand (thenar) muscles in 12 healthy volunteers. Mean and peak EMG amplitudes of both arms did not differ significantly and their EMG curves were nearly congruent. Also the timing of the EMG bursts was alike for the...

Comparative evaluation of the microbial safety of boiled locally vended ready-to-drink, HTST pasteurized and UHT bovine milk sold in Nakawa Division of Metropolitan Kampala

Timothy Omara
This study evaluated the microbial safety of vended boiled, pasteurized and UHT milk sold in Nakawa, Kampala-Uganda. 15 milk samples were analyzed; 2 samples had Salmonella, 5 had S. aureus with a count of 1.66+0.02 log10CFU/ml. E. coli was detected in 8 samples with 1.0+0.02 to 3.0+0.01log10CFU/ml count. A high load of 3.0+0.1log10CFU/ml was obtained in 3 samples with E. coli. Four E. coli positive samples had a contamination load of 2.0+0.015log10 CFU/ml of which...
