Feasibility and effectiveness of thoracic spine mobilization on sympathetic/parasympathetic balance in a healthy population - a randomized controlled double-blinded pilot study

Slavko Rogan, Jan Taeymans, Peter Clarys, Ron Clijsen & Amir Tal-Akabi
Background Physiotherapists often use thoracic spine mobilization (TSM) to reduce pain in patients with back disorders via a reduction of sympathetic activity. There is a “trade-off” in the activity of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system activity. A sympathetic/parasympathetic balance (SPB) is needed to guarantee body homeostasis. However, body homeostasis is seldom considered as an aim of the treatment from the perspective of most physiotherapists. Strong empirical evidence for the effects of TSM on the...

Estimating shear properties of walnut wood: a combined experimental and theoretical approach.

E. V. Bachtiar, M. Rüggeberg, S. Hering, M. Kaliske & Peter Niemz
In this study, several theoretical models to numerically estimate shear properties of orthotropic materials are introduced. These approaches are based on the combination of Hankinson’s empirically derived formula with other empirical and analytical calculations. Next to shear moduli, which are estimated from the elastic moduli and Poisson’s ratios, shear strengths are also estimated from the in-axis strengths. The models are validated by mechanical tests on walnut wood (Juglans regia L.), for which a sufficient data...

Mixed mode fracture behavior of welded wood joints investigated with the Arcan test

Martin Rhême, John Botsis, Joël Cugnoni & Parviz Navi
Friction welding of wood is an assembly method that is still under investigation and development. A possible application for welded wood joints is the fabrication of multi-layered panels (i.e., cross-laminated panels). In an effort to model the behavior of such products, work is needed to characterize the mechanical strength and fracture properties of welded joints produced with parallel and crossgrain orientations. The present work addresses combined experimental and numerical investigations into the strength and fracture...

Methods to determine wood moisture content and their applicability in monitoring concepts.

Philipp Dietsch, Steffen Franke, Bettina Franke, Andreas Gamper & Stefan Winter
The reaction of wood to moisture forms an integral part of any task in connection with this natural and renewable building material. Changes in wood moisture content lead to changes of virtually all physical and mechanical properties (e.g. strength and stiffness properties) of wood. Another effect of changes of the wood moisture content is the associated shrinkage or swelling of the material. The existence of high moisture content can initiate decay or growth of fungi....

Effectiveness of non-pharmaceutical interventions to prevent falls and fall-related fractures in older people living in residential aged care facilities – a systematic review and network meta-analysis protocol

Michiel Twiss, Roger Hilfiker, Timo Hinrichs, Eling D. De Bruin & Slavko Rogan
an eminent public health goal. Evidence on the effectiveness of non-pharmaceutical methods to prevent falls and fall-related fractures in residential aged care facilities (RACFs) is unclear. This review aims to assess and rank the effectiveness of the most common fall- and fracture prevention strategies of non-pharmaceutical nature in RACFs. Method: This systematic review with network-meta-analysis follows the guidelines from the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocol (PRISMA-P). We will conduct the systematic...

Improvement of ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) bonding quality with one-component polyurethane adhesive and hydrophilic primer for load-bearing application.

Gaspard Clerc, Martin Lehmann, Joseph Gabriel, Dario Salzgeber, Frédéric Pichelin, Thomas Strahm & Peter Niemz
The increasing quantity of hardwood growing in the Swiss forest represents an opportunity for the future of the wood industry. Glued laminated timbers made of hardwood offer higher strength and stiffness properties than the softwood equivalents, and they are often used in combination with softwood for local reinforcement. Additionally, their visual aspect can be an attractive selling argument. Until now, phenol resorcinol adhesive (PRF, Aerodux 185) has preferably been used for the bonding of ash...

Faded Shine... Use and Degradation of Metal Brass Powder in two 19th Century Paintings.

E.S.B. Ferreira, D. Gros, Nadim Scherrer & Stefan Zumbühl
During the examination of two 19th century oil paintings by Swiss artists, the Reading pastor (ca. 1885) by Ferdinand Hodler (1853–1918) and Portrait of a young girl (ca. 1888) by Filippo Franzoni (1857–1911), it was observed that in particular locations, the surface had an unusually granular texture, given by the application of metallic particles and the presence of large translucent green agglomerates. In this paper we investigate the composition and origin of the metal particles...

Jan Taeymans, Vera Blaser, Melanie Kneubühl & Slavko Rogan

Importance of Primary Forests for the Conservation of Saproxylic Insects

Thibault Lachat & Joerg Müller
Primary forests represent the ultimate intact habitat for saproxylic insects. However, their extent has been considerably reduced over the past centuries, and those remaining are very heterogeneously distributed. Primary forests are still locally abundant in tropical and boreal zones but are rare in temperate zones. Consequently, many saproxylic insects that were adapted to typical characteristics of primary forests, such as large amounts of dead wood or overmature and senescent trees, might have become extinct regionally...

Utilization of inorganic mineral filler material as partial replacement for wood fiber in medium density fiberboard (MDF) and its effect on material properties

Tomasz Ozyhar, Tobias Depnering, Cathy Ridgway, Matthias Welker, Joachim Schoelkopf, Ingo Mayer & Heiko Thömen
The influence of inorganic mineral filler addition on the material properties of medium density fiberboard (MDF) was inves- tigated at varying densities. Fibreboards with 10, 20 and 30% fibers replaced by calcium carbonate weight basis (dry/dry) and with target densities of 550, 700 and 850 kgm−3, respectively, were manufactured in a laboratory scale environment. The fiberboards were prepared by adding the mineral filler in dry powder form to the wood fibers to which urea formaldehyde...

Derivatization Technique To Identify Specifically Carbonyl Groups by Infrared Spectroscopy: Characterization of Photooxidative Aging Products in Terpenes and Terpeneous Resins

Stefan Zumbühl, Andreas Brändle, Andreas Hochuli, Nadim C. Scherrer & Walter Caseri
Analysis of bioorganic materials by infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) is frequently limited due to overlapping of diagnostic bands from the various components, which poses a fundamental problem to this analytical technique. The distinction of oxidized di- and triterpenes, for example, is hindered by the superposition of similar absorption bands of carbonyl functional groups summing up to a broad, nondistinctive signal. This study presents a technique for selective fluorination of various carboxylic acids by exposure to gaseous...
