The current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic was the result of the rapid transmission of a highly pathogenic coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), for which there is no efficacious vaccine or therapeutic. Toward the development of a vaccine, here we expressed and evaluated as potential candidates four versions of the spike (S) protein using an insect cell expression system: receptor binding domain (RBD), S1 subunit, the wild-type S ectodomain (S-WT), and the...

Why do public sectors perform high-level green public procurement practice? A new insight with fsQCA approach

Meng Ye, Yanlin Ma & Junqi Liu
Despite extensive studies on drivers for public sector’s green public procurement (GPP) practice, existing studies have not yet introduced configuration analysis based on holistic perspective into this field. This study, based on the Chinese background, focuses on the public sector and develops a conceptual model from a holistic perspective. Survey data are collected and we adopt the fsQCA approach for further testing, aiming to explore which combinations of GPP motivators can induce high-level GPP practice...

Comparison of the accelerating effect of graphene oxide and graphene on anaerobic transformation of bisphenol F by Pseudomonas sp. LS

Hong Lu, Jingyi Li, Ze Fu, Xiaolei Wang, Jiti Zhou & Jing Wang
It was found that bisphenol F (BPF) could be anaerobically transformed to 4,4-dihydroxybenzophenone using nitrate as an electron acceptor by Pseudomonas sp. LS. However, BPF removal was a slow process under anaerobic conditions. In the present study, effects of graphene oxide (GO) and graphene on the anaerobic transformation of BPF were studied in detail. Results showed that GO (2–10 mg/L) and graphene (2–20 mg/L) could increase the anaerobic biotransformation rate of BPF. For GO-mediated system,...

Therapeutic targeting of the USP2-E2F4 axis inhibits autophagic machinery essential for zinc homeostasis in cancer progression

Macroautophagy/autophagy is a conserved cellular process associated with tumorigenesis and aggressiveness, while mechanisms regulating expression of autophagic machinery genes in cancers still remain elusive. Herein, we identified E2F4 (E2F transcription factor 4) as a novel transcriptional activator of cytoprotective autophagy crucial for zinc homeostasis in cancer cells. Gain- and loss-of-function studies showed that E2F4 promoted autophagy in a cell cycle-dependent manner, resulting in facilitated degradation of MT (metallothionein) proteins, elevated distribution of Zn2+ within autophagosomes,...

Nitric oxide generated by Piriformospora indica-induced nitrate reductase promotes tobacco growth by regulating root architecture and ammonium and nitrate transporter gene expression

Han Li, Shenghua Fu, Jingwei Zhu, Weichang Gao, Lin Chen, Xiang Li, Shaoyu Zhang, Sha Zheng, Heng Zhang & Yanxia Liu
Nitric oxide (NO) is involved not only in the regulation of plant growth, development, and stress responses but also in the regulation of plant-microbe interactions. Here, we demonstrate that Piriformospora indica can induce tobacco nitrate reductase to produce a NO signal in roots which enhances nitrogen uptake capacity by inducing the expression of ammonium and nitrate transporter genes and the development of lateral root and root hair, thereby promoting tobacco growth. In addition, the NO...

Flow line of density functional theory in heterogeneous persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes for pollutant degradation: A review

Binghua Jing, Juan Li, Chunyang Nie, Junhui Zhou, Didi Li & Zhimin Ao
Persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (P-AOPs), as the commonly used technologies, attract intensive attention, because persulfate is stable and safe with various activation methods, and the generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) are highly active. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations can analyze the intrinsic mechanism and specific pathways of P-AOPs at microscopic level, which is difficult to be realized in experiments. Recent DFT discoveries for P-AOPs have induced tremendous interest in persulfate activation or pollutant degradation pathways,...

Cardiac disorder-related adverse events for aryl hydrocarbon receptor agonists: a safety review

Although cardiac disorder-related adverse events (AEs) have been reported in patients treated with aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) agonists, their safety profiles remain unknown. Here, we identified significant cardiac disorders associated with AHR agonists and further evaluated their relevance. Database queries were performed using OpenVigil 2.1 and AEs voluntarily submitted to Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) between 2004 and 2020 were included. This study based on the Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities...

Optimal Model Averaging of Mixed-Data Kernel-Weighted Spline Regressions

Jeffrey S. Racine, Qi Li, Dalei Yu & Li Zheng
Model averaging has a rich history dating from its use for combining forecasts from time-series models (Bates and Granger) and presents a compelling alternative to model selection methods. We propose a frequentist model averaging procedure defined over categorical regression splines (Ma, Racine, and Yang) that allows for mixed-data predictors, as well as nonnested and heteroscedastic candidate models. We demonstrate the asymptotic optimality of the proposed model averaging estimator, and develop a post-averaging inference theory for...

Xiao-Ai Zhang, Feng Tian, Yue Li, Xiao-Long Zhang, Bao-Gui Jiang, Bao-Cheng Liu, Jing-Tao Zhang, Shen Tian, Heng Ding, Shuang Li, Hao Li, Li-Qun Fang & Wei Liu
We identified relapsing fever (RF) Borrelia in 1.45% (145/10426) of the ticks and 1.40% (40/2850) of the wild mammals in a field investigation in China. Three RF Borrelia species, including human-pathogenic Borrelia miyamotoi, Borrelia persica and unclassified Babesia sp. were determined. Main species determined from ticks was B. miyamotoi (44.14%), followed by the unclassified Borrelia sp. (42.76%), and Borrelia theileri (13.10%). In wild mammals, main species found was B. persica (57.50%), followed by the unclassified...
