Shaohui Zheng, Shang Jin, Min Jiao, Wenjun Wang, Xiaoyu Zhou, Jie Xu, Yong Wang, Peipei Dou, Zhen Jin, Changyu Wu, Jingjing Li, Xinting Ge & Kai Xu
In this study, a novel intelligent nanoplatform to integrate multiple imaging and therapeutic functions for targeted cancer theranostics. The nanoplatform, DOX@Gd-MFe3O4 NPs, was constructed Gd-doped mesoporous Fe3O4 nanoparticles following with the doxorubicin (DOX) loading in the mesopores of the NPs. The DOX@Gd-MFe3O4 NPs exhibited good properties in colloidal dispersity, photothermal conversion, NIR triggered drug release, and high T1/T2 relaxicity rate (r1=9.64 mM−1s−1, r2= 177.71 mM−1s−1). Benefiting from the high MR contrast, DOX@Gd-MFe3O4 NPs enabled simultaneous...

Novel modified nano-silica/polymer composite in water-based drilling fluids to plug shale pores

Fei Liu, Zheng Zheng, Xiuying Wang, Xiaqing Li, Zhaoxiang Zhang, Xuewu Wang, Xiaodong Dai, Yanping Xin, Qingxue Liu, Hailei Yao, Shunyao Jiang, Chao Liu & Xingyan Li
The rapid growth of global energy demand necessitates high-performance water-based drilling fluids (WDFs) with excellent-plugging performance in the deep excavation of shale gas formation. Herein, we report an organic-inorganic nanocomposite (NS-D) as a plugging agent in WDFs to plug the nanoporous of shale and abate the hydration expansion of shale by integrating the advantages of inorganic and polymer nano plugging agents. The results of Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-NMR)...

Sex Difference in Lipid Levels in First-Diagnosed Drug-Naïve Depression Patients: A Case-Control and 12-Weeks Follow-up Study

Rui Yang, Lu Wang, Song Cao, Ming Chen, Chu-Jun Wu, Floyd Silva, Man-Jun Shen, Jin-Dong Chen, Mi-Mi Tang & Bi-Lian Liu
Patients with depression have a high prevalence of developing dyslipidemia. In this study, we aim to investigate the difference of serum lipids, including total cholesterol (TCH), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglycerides (TG), between the depressed patients and healthy controls. Sex differences in lipids and their psychological correlations were also included. The study included 56 healthy controls (males/females =26/30) and 110 first-diagnosed drug-naïve outpatients (males/females =35/75). A total of 42 patients...

Targeted therapy of rheumatoid arthritis via macrophage repolarization

Xu Zhou, Dandan Huang, Runkong Wang, Mingquan Wu, Liyang Zhu, Wei Peng, He Tu, Xuangeng Deng, He Zhu, Zhong Zhang, Xinming Wang & Xi Cao
The polarization of macrophages plays a critical role in the physiological and pathological progression of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Activated M1 macrophages overexpress folate receptors in arthritic joints. Hence, we developed folic acid (FA)-modified liposomes (FA-Lips) to encapsulate triptolide (TP) (FA-Lips/TP) for the targeted therapy of RA. FA-Lips exhibited significantly higher internalization efficiency in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells than liposomes (Lips) in the absence of folate. Next, an adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA) rat model was established...

Genomics-guided isolation and identification of active secondary metabolites of Bacillus velezensis BA-26

Buqing Wang, Chao Liu, Xuemiao Yang, Yana Wang, Feiyan Zhang, Huicai Cheng, Liping Zhang & Hongwei Liu
Here we report the discovery and identification of antibacterial substances from the secondary metabolites of a new strain Bacillus velezensis BA-26. The whole genome of B. velezensis BA-26 was sequenced. Its genome data were annotated, and four potentially unknown gene clusters and nine known secondary metabolite synthetic gene clusters were analyzed and excavated by antiSMASH software. Based on the predicted secondary metabolites from the genome of strain BA-26, the material identification of isolated and purified...

Bayesian Approaches for Handling Hypothetical Estimands in Longitudinal Clinical Trials With Gaussian Outcomes

G. Frank Liu, Jiajun Liu, Fang Chen, Roee Gutman & Kaifeng Lu
The International Council for Harmonisation (ICH) recently published an E9(R1) addendum that requires the estimand associated with the study objective in clinical trials to be clearly defined. One of the challenges in defining an estimand is the estimand’s handling of intercurrent events (ICEs) that affect the collection or interpretation of the data for the study. Among the strategies for handling ICEs, sponsors may prefer to examine hypothetical strategies that assess the theoretical or attributable efficacy...

Long non-coding RNA LINC00958 promotes colorectal cancer progression by enhancing the expression of LEM domain containing 1 via microRNA miR-3064-5p

Zhaoxia Luo, Shunxin Hao, Jian Yuan, Kai Zhu, Shuo Liu, Jing Zhang & Lei Yao
Colorectal cancer is a common cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Thus, there is an urgent need to determine the mechanism of progression of colorectal cancer. In this study, we investigated the function and mechanism of long non-coding RNA LINC00958, providing a new biomarker for colorectal cancer. The expression of LINC00958, miR-3064-5p, and LEM domain containing 1 (LEMD1) in colorectal cancer tissues and cell lines was analyzed using reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). The...

Potent immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory bisindole alkaloids from Melodinus fusiformis

Lu Liu, Ming-Jun Xie, Wen-Bing Zhou, Jin-Tang Wang, Jia-Yi Wang, Afsar Khan, Ya-Ping Liu, Jian-Xin Cao, Gui-Guang Cheng & Wen-Yuan Mao
Phytochemical investigation of Melodinus fusiformis led to a new aspidosperma-aspidosperma bisindole alkaloid (BIA), bis-19β-hydroxyvenalstonidine (1), together with three known BIAs (2–4). The structures were established by extensive analysis of their HRESIMS, NMR data, and comparing with the reported data. BIA 1 is an almost symmetrical structure, linked by C3–C14’ bond, while BIAs 2–4 are reported for the first time from the plant. The cytotoxic, immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory activities of BIAs 1–4 were evaluated in vitro....
