Huihui Wang, Yue Wang, Xu Jing, Zhenjia Chen & Xiaowen Wang
A simple, fast, air-assisted liquid-liquid micro-extraction technique using the solidification of a floating organic droplet method was developed for the extraction of three strobilurin fungicides in water samples before analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography equipped with a diode array detector (HPLC-DAD). In this method, a low-density solvent (1-dodecanol) was used as the extraction solvent. Fine extraction solvent droplets were rapidly formed and dispersed into the water samples through air-pumping by syringe rather than an organic...

Injury perceptions and their association with recovery outcomes in adults with traumatic orthopaedic injuries: a scoping review

Prudence Butler, Thi Nguyen, Melita J. Giummarra, Shaun O’Leary & Michele Sterling
How people perceive their injury may be associated with recovery. This scoping review used the Common Sense Model of Illness Perceptions (CSM) as a framework to: (1) characterise injury perceptions; (2) describe biopsychosocial factors related to injury perceptions, and (3) determine how injury perceptions are associated with recovery outcomes. A broad search strategy was used across eight databases to identify studies exploring injury perceptions and related concepts in adults with traumatic orthopaedic injuries. Two reviewers...

Streptococcus agalactiae glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) elicits multiple cytokines from human cells and has a minor effect on bacterial persistence in the murine female reproductive tract

Matthew J. Sullivan, Kelvin G. K. Goh, Ruby Thapa, Debasish Chattopadhyay, Deepak S. Ipe, Benjamin L. Duell, Lahiru Katupitiya, Dean Gosling, Dhruba Acharya & Glen C. Ulett
Streptococcus agalactiae glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), encoded by gapC, is a glycolytic enzyme that is associated with virulence and immune-mediated protection. However, the role of GAPDH in cellular cytokine responses to S. agalactiae, bacterial phagocytosis and colonization of the female reproductive tract, a central host niche, is unknown. We expressed and studied purified recombinant GAPDH (rGAPDH) of S. agalactiae in cytokine elicitation assays with human monocyte-derived macrophage, epithelial cell, and polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) co-culture infection...

Helen C. Sherrell, Liam T. B. Dunn, Dell Horey, Vicki Flenady & Sailesh Kumar
Involving patients and consumers in research design helps ensure relevance for those affected by the problem being investigated and can optimize recruitment to clinical trials. This is particularly important when conducting research involving pregnant women. We investigated women’s motivations to participate in a hypothetical randomized control trial (RCT) of a third-trimester screening test for intrapartum fetal compromise (IFC) and adverse perinatal outcomes. Women attending for routine antenatal care at a tertiary center were invited to...

Can We Retrofit Suburban Arterials?

Paul Hess, Michael Piper & Andre Sorensen
The multilane arterial roadway is a central feature of post–World War II (WWII) suburbs that challenges efforts to create more transit-oriented regions. Retrofitting suburbs is an important planning goal, but research examining the urban form of arterials and their potential for transformation has been scarce. We analyzed four suburban corridors in the Toronto (Canada) region developed during different periods of suburbanization. We found that the walkability of corridors declined as modernist planning ideas were more...

Kyoko Miura, Minas Coroneo, Jean Claude Dusingize, Catherine M. Olsen, Rick Tinker, Ken Karipidis, Ian Hosegood & Adèle C. Green
Because little is known about cataract in pilots, we estimated prevalence by anonymously ascertaining all commercial airline pilots diagnosed with cataract 2011–2016 using the electronic Medical Records System of the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority. Of 14,163 Australian male commercial pilots licensed in 2011, 1286 aged ≥60 had biennial eye examinations showing a cataract prevalence of 11.6%. Among 12,877 pilots aged <60, based on compulsory eye examinations only when first licensed, prevalence was 0.5%. There...

Xiaocui Song, Li Ge, Dongsha Wang, Li Li, Dongmei Ma & Xiu Li
Previous studies have shown that 4G/5G polymorphism in promoter region of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) gene can affect insulin sensitivity by elevating the level and activity of plasma PAI-1. In order to elucidate the relationship between the polymorphism of PAI-1 gene and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), we used transmission disequilibrium test (TDT) to study the family of PCOS. Eight hundred and fifty-five participants consisting of 285 trios (mother, father and offspring with PCOS) were recruited...
