Can We Retrofit Suburban Arterials?

Paul Hess, Michael Piper & Andre Sorensen
The multilane arterial roadway is a central feature of post–World War II (WWII) suburbs that challenges efforts to create more transit-oriented regions. Retrofitting suburbs is an important planning goal, but research examining the urban form of arterials and their potential for transformation has been scarce. We analyzed four suburban corridors in the Toronto (Canada) region developed during different periods of suburbanization. We found that the walkability of corridors declined as modernist planning ideas were more...

Prevalence of cataract among Australian commercial airline pilots

Kyoko Miura, Minas Coroneo, Jean Claude Dusingize, Catherine M. Olsen, Rick Tinker, Ken Karipidis, Ian Hosegood & Adèle C. Green
Because little is known about cataract in pilots, we estimated prevalence by anonymously ascertaining all commercial airline pilots diagnosed with cataract 2011–2016 using the electronic Medical Records System of the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority. Of 14,163 Australian male commercial pilots licensed in 2011, 1286 aged ≥60 had biennial eye examinations showing a cataract prevalence of 11.6%. Among 12,877 pilots aged <60, based on compulsory eye examinations only when first licensed, prevalence was 0.5%. There...

Maternal asthma during pregnancy and extremes of body mass index increase the risk of perinatal mortality: a retrospective cohort study

Jui Das, Christine Andrews, Vicki Flenady & Vicki L. Clifton
Asthma during pregnancy and extremes of body mass index (BMI) are independently associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes but the impact of the two conditions combined are currently unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the contribution of maternal BMI to adverse birth outcomes in pregnancies complicated by asthma. The study utilized the routinely collected perinatal data on births at the Mater Mother’s Hospital Brisbane, Australia, from January 2008 to December 2019. BMI was...

Synthesis, crystal structure and DFT study of N-(6-sulfamoylpyridin-3-yl)acetamide

Jun-Li Xiao, Qian Guo, Pan-Chang Shi, Wen-Fang Deng, Zhi-Xu Zhou & Chun-Shen Zhao
In this study, the target compound was synthesized from 6-(benzylthio)pyridine-3-amine. The single crystal of the title compound was identified by X-ray diffraction. The molecular structure was further calculated by the density functional theory (DFT) and compared with the X-ray data. The results of conformational analysis showed that the DFT-optimized molecular structure was consistent with the crystal structure determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The molecular electrostatic potential and frontier molecular orbital of the title compound were...

Cost-effectiveness of single-inhaler triple therapy for patients with severe COPD: a systematic literature review

Rezwanul Hasan Rana, Khorshed Alam, Syed Afroz Keramat & Jeff Gow
Evidence from non-randomized studies shows benefits for single-inhaler users compared with multiple-inhaler users who receive the same medication. As a result, comparative cost-effectiveness studies are required to inform treatment decisions with an increasing choice of medications and devices for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This study conducted a systematic literature review to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of using a single combination inhaler regimen for patients with severe COPD. This review also investigated the health impact on...

Tigliane-and daphnane-type diterpenoids from the buds of Daphne genkwa with their cytotoxic activities

Ying Chen, Cai-Lin Zhao, Wei Dong, Fei-Fan Song, Li-Na Guo, Hong-Lian Zhang, Lv Zhen, Li Li, Jin Ye & Bo Song
Two new tigliane- and daphnane-type diterpenoids, given the trivial names daphnegens A–B (1–2) were isolated from the buds of Daphne genkwa. Their structures were assigned on the basis of extensive spectroscopic. The absolute configurations of both compounds were determined by comparison of their calculated and experimental CD curves. In addition, compounds 1–2 were tested for their cytotoxic activities against MCF-7 and HepG-2 human cancer cell lines, and compound 2 showed remarkable cytotoxic activity against HepG-2...

Sensitive Colorimetric Determination of Cyromazine Using a Gold Nanoparticle (Au NP) Based Sensor with Smartphone Detection

Qiang Shi, Ting Wang, Ying Zheng, Qian Guo, Bing Wang & Sujuan Zhu
A highly sensitive colorimetric sensor based on the aggregation of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and a smartphone camera as detector is reported for the determination of cyromazine. In the presence of cyromazine, a decrease in the characteristic SPR absorbance peak of Au NPs is observed at 520 nm. A color change in the solution of Au NPs was observed from burgundy to purple and then to blue gray with a red shift of the absorbance...
