Yong Xie, Conghua Song, Hong Cheng, Canxia Xu, Zhenyu Zhang, Jiangbin Wang, Lijuan Huo, Qin Du, Jianming Xu, Ye Chen, Xiaomei Zhang, Guoxin Zhang, Guibin Yang, Xiuli Zuo, Tao Guo, Yapi Lu, Fen Wang, Xuehong Wang, Kun Zhuang, Shiyao Chen, Wenzhong Liu & Nonghua Lu
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) recurrence remains a significant public health concern. The study aimed to assess H. pylori reinfection rate and identify its risk factors in China. This prospective open cohort, observational study was performed at 18 hospitals across 15 provinces in China. Consecutive patients who received the successful initial eradication during 1 January 2012 and 31 December 2018 were eligible for enrolment. H. pylori recurrence was defined as reinfection that occurred at more than...

Renin-angiotensin system inhibitors improve the clinical outcomes of COVID-19 patients with hypertension

Juan Meng, Guohui Xiao, Juanjuan Zhang, Xing He, Min Ou, Jing Bi, Rongqing Yang, Wencheng Di, Zhaoqin Wang, Zigang Li, Hong Gao, Lei Liu & Guoliang Zhang
The dysfunction of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) has been observed in coronavirus infection disease (COVID-19) patients, but whether RAS inhibitors, such as angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) and angiotensin II type 1 receptor blockers (ARBs), are associated with clinical outcomes remains unknown. COVID-19 patients with hypertension were enrolled to evaluate the effect of RAS inhibitors. We observed that patients receiving ACEI or ARB therapy had a lower rate of severe diseases and a trend toward a...

Robust RNA-seq data analysis using an integrated method of ROC curve and Kolmogorov–Smirnov test

Shengping Yang, Kun Zhang & Zhide Fang
It is a common approach to dichotomize a continuous biomarker in clinical setting for the convenience of application. Analytically, results from using a dichotomized biomarker are often more reliable and resistant to outliers, bi-modal and other unknown distributions. There are two commonly used methods for selecting the best cutoff value for dichotomization of a continuous biomarker, using either maximally selected chi-square statistic or a ROC curve, specifically the Youden Index. In this paper, we explained...

Personalized Policy Learning Using Longitudinal Mobile Health Data

Xinyu Hu, Min Qian, Bin Cheng & Ying Kuen Cheung
Personalized policy represents a paradigm shift one decision rule for all users to an individualized decision rule for each user. Developing personalized policy in mobile health applications imposes challenges. First, for lack of adherence, data from each user are limited. Second, unmeasured contextual factors can potentially impact on decision making. Aiming to optimize immediate rewards, we propose using a generalized linear mixed modeling framework where population features and individual features are modeled as fixed and...

Comparison of the accelerating effect of graphene oxide and graphene on anaerobic transformation of bisphenol F by Pseudomonas sp. LS

Hong Lu, Jingyi Li, Ze Fu, Xiaolei Wang, Jiti Zhou & Jing Wang
It was found that bisphenol F (BPF) could be anaerobically transformed to 4,4-dihydroxybenzophenone using nitrate as an electron acceptor by Pseudomonas sp. LS. However, BPF removal was a slow process under anaerobic conditions. In the present study, effects of graphene oxide (GO) and graphene on the anaerobic transformation of BPF were studied in detail. Results showed that GO (2–10 mg/L) and graphene (2–20 mg/L) could increase the anaerobic biotransformation rate of BPF. For GO-mediated system,...

Efficacy and safety of pembrolizumab for treating advanced non-small-cell lung cancer: a meta-analysis of phase II and III randomized controlled trials

Tianyao Gong, Lei Liu, Yufei Liu, Ke Liu, Yang Yang, Liuying Li & Chuantao Zhang
We conducted a meta-analysis to systematically review the efficacy and safety of pembrolizumab for advanced NSCLC. Databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) treated with pembrolizumab till July 2021. Seven RCTs and 3988 patients were included. Our analysis suggests that pembrolizumab was more effective at improving PFS (HR, 0.59; 95% CI: 0.43–0.79; p = 0.0005), OS (HR, 0.65; 95% CI: 0.55–0.76; p < 0.00001) and ORR (RR, 1.85; 95% CI: 1.64–2.09; p < 0.00001)...

Genome-wide identification of the SWEET gene family in Phaseolus vulgaris L. and their patterns of expression under abiotic stress

Sugar Will Eventually be Exported Transporters (SWEET) proteins function as sugar transporters that play key roles in plant growth, development, and biotic and abiotic stress responses. However, little is known about the SWEET gene family in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). In this study, 24 putative PvSWEET genes were identified. They can be categorized into four subgroups based on a phylogenetic analysis, exon–intron structure, cis-regulatory elements, and MEME motifs. A collinearity analysis showed that three...

Enhancing International Students’ Experience in the UK through the Development of a Higher Education Co-opetition Framework: An Examination into Welsh Universities’ International Collaboration and Student Recruitment Activities

Yi He
Co-opetition is an increasingly popular hybrid corporate strategy, combining cooperative competition and competitive cooperation (Bengtsson and Kock, 2014). It offers organisations five commonly utilised co-opetive models, namely strategic alliance, joint venture, franchising, licensing and co-branding, in which business partners work together to achieve mutual goals, as well as compete in a healthy marketing environment (Leitao et al., 2014). The core of co-opetition, known as the value net framework, provides organisations a guideline to create sustainable...

Efficient synthesis of 3-hydroxy chromones via oxidative cyclization mediated by lipase

Jiapeng Li, Yue Yu, Yaning Xu, Fengxi Li, Yuqi Liu, Yifei Sun, Chunyu Wang, Peng Chen & Lei Wang
In this work, an efficient synthesis of 3-hydroxy chromones was accomplished through oxidative cyclization mediated by lipase. This enzymatic process has salient features of environmental friendliness, mild reaction condition, satisfactory yield, green reusable biocatalyst, and short reaction time. The proposed method expands the application of lipase in organic synthesis.

Adsorption behaviour and mechanism of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons onto typical microplastics in a soil solution

Zhen Li, Lina Sun & Hui Wang
Microplastics (MPs) have a tremendous potential to sorb hydrophobic organic contaminants in the soil environment. The effects of MPs in the soil systems, however, remain largely unexplored. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of polyethylene and polystyrene MPs on the transport of the benzo[a]anthracene (BaA) and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) in soil matrices. In this study, we investigated the sorption process of BaA and BaP in batch sorption experiments in a laboratory and...
