February 2020 Southland flooding evacuation and response: Results of a survey

Lucy H. Kaiser, Finn R. Scheele, Sally H. Potter, Maureen A. Coomer & Joshua Stewart
In February 2020, the communities of Gore, Mataura and Wyndham in Southland, Aotearoa New Zealand, were impacted by a significant flood event, leading to a mandatory evacuation of the community and numerous flooded properties. A survey of the communities of Gore, Mataura and Wyndham was conducted in July 2020 to gather residents’ perspectives and experiences during the flooding event and ensuing evacuation. Topics included risk perception, weather and flood warnings, evacuation, impacts and demographics. Of...

Expropriation Risk and FDI in Developing Countries: Does Return of Capital Dominate Return on Capital?

M. Akhtaruzzaman, Nathan Berg & Christopher Hajzler
Previously reported effects of institutional quality and political risks on foreign direct investment (FDI) are mixed and, therefore, difficult to interpret. We present empirical evidence suggesting a relatively clear, statistically robust, and intuitive characterization. Institutional factors that affect the likelihood of an abrupt and total loss of foreigners’ capital (i.e., return of capital) dominate those that affect rates of return conditional on a strictly positive terminal investment value (i.e., return on capital). A one-standarddeviation reduction...

Price-Level Dispersion versus Inflation-Rate Dispersion: Evidence from Three Countries

David Fielding, Christopher Hajzler & James MacGee
Inflation can affect both the dispersion of commodity-specific price levels across locations (relative price variability, RPV) and the dispersion of inflation rates (relative inflation variability, RIV). Some menu-cost models and models of consumer search suggest that the RIV-inflation relationship could differ from the RPV-inflation relationship. However, most empirical studies examine only RIV, finding that RIV is high when inflation is high. We examine city-level retail price data from Japan, Canada and Nigeria, and find that...

Variation in milk fat globule size and composition: A source of bioactives for human health

Caroline Thum, Nicole C. Roy, David W. Everett & Warren C. McNabb
Milk fat globules (MFGs) are secreted from the mammalian gland and are composed of a triacylglycerol core surrounded by a triple membrane structure, the milk fat globule membrane (MFGM). The MFGM contains complex lipids and proteins reported to have nutritional, immunological, neurological and digestive functions. Human and ruminant milk are shown to share a similar MFG structure but with different size, profile and abundance of protein and polar lipids. This review summarizes the reported data...
