Critical review of catalysis-assisted nanofiltration for micropollutants removal: Catalytic coupled nanofiltration system vs catalytic nanofiltration membrane
Tingting Zhu, Xin Li, Xuewu Zhu, Bin Liu, Junyong Zhu & Jianquan Luo
The integration of nanofiltration with catalysis enables high-efficient removal of micropollutants due to its remarkable high selectivity and superior degradation efficacy. Meanwhile, the catalysis-assisted nanofiltration can largely alleviate the issues of inferior low-molecular-weight micropollutants selectivity, membrane fouling and tradeoff limitation. Two different technical routes, catalytic coupled nanofiltration system and catalytic nanofiltration membrane, have been developed based on nanofiltration module and material design for micropollutants separation enhancement. In this review, we first summarize the underlying governing...

Chemotherapy is the primary treatment for advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, related dose-dependent toxicity limits its clinical use. Therefore, it is necessary to explore new strategies for improving the clinical outcomes while reducing the side effects of chemotherapy in the treatment of NSCLC. In this study, we designed and synthesized epidermal growth factor (EGF)-modified doxorubicin nanoparticles (EGF@DOX-NPs) that selectively targets the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) overexpressed in lung tumor cells. When administered in...

Purpose: Oncology studies employing digital dissection methodologies have provided some insight on the biological features of tumor microenvironment of Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), but molecular diagnostics rarely have therapeutic impact. We aimed to identify a novel prognostic biomarker to investigate immune characteristics of TNBC using transcriptomic features. Patients and Methods: We extracted whole transcriptome from breast cancer tissue of 30 TNBC patients and then used bioinformatics approaches to characterize the different immune cell contents in...
The role of the epigenetic modifier MLL1 in producing an effective and tailored B cell response to the pathogen-influenced microenvironment
Yan Zhang
Diseases caused by infections, such as helminth infections or viral infections, pose a major human health problem worldwide. In particular, one key reason why helminths cause long-term health and economic burdens is that there is currently no effective targeted vaccine for human use. B cell responses – resulting in the production of antibody – underpin most successful vaccine designs. This thesis uncovered MLL1 as a novel regulator of B cell responses to different pathogens, and...

Peixiao Wang, Yan Zhang, Tao Hu & Tong Zhang
Accurate traffic flow prediction on the urban road network is an indispensable function of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), which is of great significance for urban traffic planning. However, the current traffic flow prediction methods still face many challenges, such as missing values and dynamic spatial relationships in traffic flow. In this study, a dynamic temporal graph neural network considering missing values (D-TGNM) is proposed for traffic flow prediction. First, inspired by the Bidirectional Encoder Representations...

Comparing dose levels to placebo using a continuous outcome in a small n, sequential, multiple assignment, randomized trial (snSMART)
Fang Fang, Roy N. Tamura, Thomas M. Braun & Kelley M. Kidwell
Identifying optimal treatments for patients living with rare diseases is challenging due to the small numbers of individuals affected. One design used to address this challenge is known as the small n, sequential, multiple assignment, randomized trial (snSMART). To investigate the efficacy of an active drug measured by a continuous outcome tested at a low and high dose compared to placebo, we propose a new two-stage snSMART design. In stage 1, patients are randomized to...

Yan Zhang, Xiujuan Chen, Yuan Lin, Chengying Lian & Xiumei Xiong
Heterotopic pregnancy (HP) is a rare but potentially life-threatening event with a high risk of maternal death, which also jeopardise the coexisting intrauterine pregnancy (IUP), thus an early accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment can decrease adverse complications. We aimed to explore the early predictors for pregnancy outcomes of HP. We reviewed patients with HP following assisted reproductive technology in our institution between January 2013 and December 2020. The relationships between pregnancy outcomes and clinical features...

Robust parameter design of mixed multiple responses based on a latent variable Gaussian process model
Cuihong Zhai, Jianjun Wang, Zebiao Feng, Yan Ma & Haisong Deng
Traditional robust parameter design methods mainly focus on the optimization of quantitative quality characteristics. However, computer experiments involving qualitative and quantitative mixed input and output occur frequently in the manufacturing industry, which prompted the authors to develop an effective meta-modeling and optimization technique for such experiments. This article combines the latent variable Gaussian process (LVGP) model and fuzzy set theory to create a mixed multi-response LVGP (MMR-LVGP) model involving qualitative and quantitative mixed input and...
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION from Sensory evolution in a cavefish radiation: patterns of neuromast distribution and associated behaviour in Sinocyclocheilus (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae)
Bing Chen, Tingru Mao, Yewei Liu, Wenzhang Dai, Xianglin Li, Amrapali P. Rajput, Marcio R. Pie, Jian Yang, Joshua B. Gross & Madhava Meegaskumbura
The genus Sinocyclocheilus, comprises a large radiation of freshwater cavefishes, are well known for their presence of regressive features (e.g. variable eye reduction). Fewer constructive features are known, such as the expansion of the lateral line system (LLS), which is involved in detecting water movements. The precise relationship between LLS expansion and cave adaptation is not well understood. Here, we examine morphology and LLS-mediated behaviour in Sinocyclocheilus species characterized by broad variation in eye size,...

With the aim of shedding further light on the role of environmental factors in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) etiology, we hereby conducted a historical narrative review to critically appraise the published reports on ALS geographical clusters using the modern interpretation of the Bradford Hill criteria for causation. Our research hypothesis was that the more criteria were met, the greater was the evidence supporting a causal association. We found that cluster studies that met the greatest...
A high-dimensional neural network potential for molecular dynamics simulations of condensed phase nickel and phase transitions
Hao Deng, Jeffrey Comer & Bin Liu
A high-dimensional neural network interatomic potential was developed and used in molecular dynamics simulations of condensed phase Ni and Ni systems with liquid–solid phase coexistence. The reference data set was generated by sampling the potential energy surface over a broad temperature-pressure domain using ab initio MD simulations to train a unified potential. Excellent agreement was achieved between bulk face-centred cubic nickel thermal expansion simulations and relevant experimental data. The same potential also yields accurate structures...
