Can Ownership Limit the Effectiveness of EU Consumer Contract Law Directives?

Wolfgang Faber & Claes Martinson
Does the acquisition of ownership form a strict barrier to the application of EU consumer contract law rules? In particular: does the acquisition of ownership prevent a national court from reviewing unfair terms in a mortgage agreement? The CJEU said so in its recent judgement C-598/15 Banco Santander, where a bank itself acquired a mortgaged apartment in a forced sale. We consider this a too formal way of reasoning. In order to make a constructive...

Pilgrimage and Ancestors: the importance of return

Jorgen Hellman
Drawing on ethnographic material from pilgrimages on West Java I argue that understandings of pilgrimage will benefit from including the return home in order to fully appreciate the meaning it holds for pilgrims. If we include into the study an extensive period after coming home, it facilitates situating the practice in a specific socio-cultural context and helps to understand how a pilgrimage partakes in these settings rather than being a ‘ “one off” transient and...

Clinical outcomes in cancer patients with COVID-19 in Sweden

Lisa Bondeson, Anna Thulin, Lars Ny, Max Levin, Johanna Svensson, Magnus Lindh & Zhiyuan Zhao
The results of studies on the relationship between cancer and COVID-19 have been conflicting and therefore further studies are needed. We aimed to examine the incidence of COVID-19 among patients at one of the largest oncology departments in Sweden, and to evaluate and identify risk factors for poor outcomes, hospital care and death, associated with COVID-19 among cancer patients. This retrospective study included cancer patients at a single center who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 by...

E74 Like ETS Transcription Factor 3 is a Negative Regulator of Pathogenic Lamina Propria T Helper 17.1 Cells in Murine Colitis

Bo Hu, Hao Wang & Fei Xiao
Interleukin-17A (IL-17A)-expressing T cells, including T helper 17 (Th17) and T helper 17.1 (Th17.1) cells, play a significant role in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs). Identifying the mechanisms underlying the heterogeneity and plasticity of IL-17A-expressing T cells is crucial for understanding and controlling their pathogenicity. The role of E74 like ETS transcription factor 3 (ELF3) in regulating the pathogenicity of IL-17A-expressing T cells has not been studied before. Dextran sulfate sodium was used to induce acute...

Expectation-Driven Term Structure of Equity and Bond Yields

Ming Zeng & Guihai Zhao
Recent findings on the term structure of equity and bond yields pose serious challenges to existing models of equilibrium asset pricing. This paper presents a new equilibrium model of subjective expectations to explain the joint historical dynamics of equity and bond yields (and their yield spreads). The movements of equity and bond yields are driven mainly by subjective expectations of dividend and gross domestic product (GDP) growth. Yields on short-term dividend claims are more volatile...

Study on Physicochemical Properties and Potential Applications of Chemically Treated Luffa Sponge Fibers

To explore and expand the application of luffa sponge (LS) fiber, three methods were used to chemically modify the LS fibers. The nanoindentation (NI) results show that the LS fibers exhibit a high elastic modulus (12.4 GPa) and hardness (0.7 GPa). Upon treating the fibers with 5%NaOH-5%H2O2, the NI hardness of the fibers increases by 14.3%. However, when 10%NaOH-20%CH3COOH (method B) is used, the hardness of the cell walls decreases by 28.6%. In this case,...

Clinical outcomes and sick leave in relation to UDCA treatment in Swedish patients with primary biliary cholangitis

Ida Henriksson, Ruzan Udumyan, Emma Nilsson, Kristina Önnerhag, Fredrik Rorsman, Mårten Werner, Hanns-Ulrich Marschall, Staffan Wahlin & Nils Nyhlin
Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is an autoimmune liver disease that may progress into liver cirrhosis. Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) is known to prevent or delay the disease progression, but little is known about work incapacity in PBC patients. We aimed to compare clinical outcomes (transplantation-free survival; cirrhosis development) and sick leave in patients with PBC with and without UDCA therapy. The medical records of 526 patients with PBC diagnosed from 2004 to 2016 were reviewed retrospectively....
