Role of intestinal extracellular matrix-related signaling in porcine epidemic diarrhea virus infection

Yuchen Li, Jianda Li, Xiuyu Wang, Qingxin Wu & Qian Yang
Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is emerging as a major threat to the global swine industry. Clinical PEDV infection is associated with severe intestinal lesions, resulting in absorptive dysfunction and high mortality rates in suckling piglets. The extracellular matrix (ECM) is an important component of intestinal tissue, providing a structural framework and conveying tissue-specific signals to nearby enterocytes. In this study, we investigated the extensive ECM remodeling observed in intestinal epithelial cells infected with PEDV...

Shan Jiang, Zuoxiang Zeng, Weilan Xue, Zhijie Mao & Ying Wang
This work studied the physical properties of three deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and their catalytic activity in the esterification of palmitic acid and ethanol. Three types of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were successfully prepared using p-toluene sulfonic acid monohydrate (PTSA) as hydrogen bond donor (HBD) with dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DTAC), tetradecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (TTAC) and octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (OTAC) as hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA). The freezing points of DESs were measured in...

Yuangang Xu, Dongxue Li, Pengcheng Wang, Qiuhan Lin, Lujia Ding, Tianyang Hou, Yuan Yuan & Ming Lu
A new cyclo-pentazolate anion-based energetic cocrystal NH4N5 · 1/6NH4Cl was synthesized. The structure, thermal behavior, sensitivity, and detonation properties of NH4N5 · 1/6NH4Cl were studied. Cube-shaped NH4N5 · 1/6NH4Cl crystallizes in the Fd-3 m space group, and is formed by hydrogen bonding interactions. DSC-TG-MS combined techniques show that NH4N5 · 1/6NH4Cl has better thermal stability than NH4N5. The cocrystal exhibits low impact and friction sensitivity, and largely reduces the mechanical sensitivity of NH4N5. Furthermore, the...

On the Quantification of Boundary Layer Effects on Flame Temperature Measurements Using Line-of-sight Absorption Spectroscopy

Liuhao Ma, Kin-Pang Cheong, Min Yang, Chaokai Yuan & Wei Ren
We studied the boundary layer effects on flame temperature measurements using line-of-sight (LOS) absorption spectroscopy. The primary objective is to quantify the measurement uncertainty of the LOS-determined temperature, which is influenced by the thermal and species boundary layers existing in standard laminar premixed flames. The boundary layer thickness (δ), central flame temperature (Tc) and species concentration (Xc) are the major factors investigated in this work. Typical absorption lines of H2O in the wavelength range of...

Ubiquilin 1 suppresses the cancer stem cell–like traits of non-small cell lung cancer cells by regulating reactive oxygen species homeostasis

Ting Liu, Qianqian Ma, Wenjie Li, Yan Hu, Jun Yang & Qi Yao
Cancer stem cell (CSC) has been confirmed to trigger tumor occurrence and progression and CSC can develop strategies to maintain a lower reactive oxygen species (ROS) level compared to cancer cells. However, the mechanisms contributing to ROS homeostasis in CSC are still lacking key elements. In the current study, we found that reductive redox states and ROS levels were suppressed in non-adherent spheres formed by non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells, which were confirmed to...

Folic acid-modified ROS-responsive nanoparticles encapsulating luteolin for targeted breast cancer treatment

Yu Wang, Qianmei Wang, Wei Feng, Qian Yuan, Xiaowei Qi, Sheng Chen, Pu Yao, Qing Dai, Peiyuan Xia, Dinglin Zhang & Fengjun Sun
Luteolin (Lut) is a natural flavonoid polyphenolic compound with multiple pharmacological activities, such as anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor effects. However, the poor aqueous solubility and low bioactivity of Lut restrict its clinical translation. Herein, we developed a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive nanoplatforms to improve the bioactivity of Lut. Folic acid (FA) was employed to decorate the nanoparticles (NPs) to enhance its targeting ability. The size of Lut-loaded ROS-responsive nanoparticles (Lut/Oxi-αCD NPs) and FA-modified Lut/Oxi-αCD NPs...

Xingfa Li, Dandan Liang, Chaoxu Wang, Yongguo Li, Runbin Duan & Li Yu
A new type of metal-free catalyst was successfully prepared by doping boron (B) in the carbon nanotube. The catalyst had 99.4% removal of phenol in 60 min at pH 7 by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). In order to explore the origin of the high catalytic activity, the samples were characterized by Raman and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and the reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the process of catalytic degradation were investigated. The Raman results showed that...

Rui Yang, Lu Wang, Song Cao, Ming Chen, Chu-Jun Wu, Floyd Silva, Man-Jun Shen, Jin-Dong Chen, Mi-Mi Tang & Bi-Lian Liu
Patients with depression have a high prevalence of developing dyslipidemia. In this study, we aim to investigate the difference of serum lipids, including total cholesterol (TCH), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglycerides (TG), between the depressed patients and healthy controls. Sex differences in lipids and their psychological correlations were also included. The study included 56 healthy controls (males/females =26/30) and 110 first-diagnosed drug-naïve outpatients (males/females =35/75). A total of 42 patients...

Yan Chen, Da Lin, Changxuan Shi, Liang Guo, Linhua Liu, Lin Chen, Ting Li, Ying Liu, Chengchao Zheng, Xintong Chi, Chun Meng & Yaoming Xue
Insulin resistance (IR) is a complex pathological condition resulting from the dysregulation of cellular response to insulin hormone in insulin-dependent cells and is recognized as a pathogenic hallmark and strong risk factor for metabolic syndrome. The present study aims to elucidate the molecular mechanism of the pathogenesis of IR. Here, we used human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) to establish the IR cell model induced by 1 × 10−6 mmol/L insulin. After 48 h, reactive...
