MIR-300 in the imprinted DLK1-DIO3 domain suppresses the migration of bladder cancer by regulating the SP1/MMP9 pathway
Huaqing Yan, Jiangfeng Li, Yufan Ying, Haiyun Xie, Hong Chen, Xin Xu & Xiangyi Zheng
Emerging research has suggested that miRNAs play a significant role in oncogenesis and tumor progression by regulating multiple molecular pathways. Here, we investigated miR-300, which inhibited bladder cancer (BCa) migration by regulating the SP1/MMP9 pathway. miR-300, belonging to the DLK1-DIO3 miRNA cluster, is frequently expressed at lower levels in BCa tissue than in adjacent normal tissue due to DNA methylation. Reinforced expression of miR-300 significantly suppressed the migration of BCa cells. We carried out a...
A new functionalized reduced graphene oxide adsorbent for removing heavy metal ions in water via coordination and ion exchange
Chao-Zhi Zhang, Bin Chen, Yuan Bai & Jing Xie
Heavy metal ion pollution has become a serious problem. In this paper, a new type of adsorbent, reduced graphene oxide grafted by 4-sulfophenylazo groups (RGOS), was synthesized to adsorb heavy metal ions in an aqueous solution via two kinds of adsorption modes, ion exchange and coordination. The maximum adsorption capacities of the RGOS for Pb(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), Cd(II) and Cr(III) were 689, 59, 66, 267 and 191 mg/g, respectively. Adsorption equilibrium time of RGOS for...

Epsilon-toxin (ETX) is produced by types B and D strains of Clostridium perfringens, which cause fatal enterotoxaemia in sheep, goats and cattle. Previous studies showed that only a restricted number of cell lines are sensitive to ETX and ETX-induced hemolysis has not previously been reported. In this study, the hemolytic ability of ETX was examined using erythrocytes from 10 species including murine, rabbit, sheep, monkey and human. We found that ETX caused hemolysis in human...

The VraSR regulatory system contributes to virulence in Streptococcus suis via resistance to innate immune defenses
Peixi Chang, Weitian Li, Guolin Shi, Huan Li, Xiaoqing Yang, Zechen Xia, Yuan Ren, Zhiwei Li, Huanchun Chen & Weicheng Bei
Streptococcus suis is a highly invasive pathogen that can cause sepsis and meningitis in pigs and humans. However, we have limited understanding of the mechanisms S. suis uses to evade innate immunity. To investigate the involvement of the two-component signal transduction system of S. suis in host immune defense, we examined the expression of 15 response regulators of S. suis following stimulation with polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs). We found that several response regulators were significantly up-regulated...
