Circular RNA 0000654 facilitates the growth of gastric cancer cells through absorbing microRNA-149-5p to up-regulate inhibin-beta A
Han Liu & Wen Dai
Circular (circ) RNAs are differentially expressed in gastric cancer (GC) and participate in the biological growth of tumor cells. Given that, investigations were performed to unravel the function of circ_0000654 in GC. GC tissue and normal tissue specimens were obtained, in which circ_0000654, microRNA (miR)-149-5p, and inhibin-beta A (INHBA) levels were examined. GC cell line (BGC-823) was transfected to alter circ_0000654 and miR-149-5p expression, thereby observing cell malignancy. Stably-transfected BGC-823 cells were injected into nude...

Intrauterine adhesions (IUA), characterized by endometrial fibrosis, is a common cause of uterine infertility. We previously demonstrated that partial epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and the loss of epithelial homeostasis play a vital role in the development of endometrial fibrosis. As a pro-survival strategy in maintaining cell and tissue homeostasis, macroautophagy/autophagy, conversely, may participate in this process. However, the role of autophagy in endometrial fibrosis remains unknown. Here, we demonstrated that autophagy is defective in endometria of...

Hong-Bo Zhang, Xiang-Ming Qiu, Yi-Chao Zhang, Ting-Ting Huang, Zhan-Jie Zuo & Tao Zhang
Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has increased morbidity and mortality rate worldwide. The current NSCLS therapies are associated with poor outcomes and need further improvement. CircRNAs were shown to regulate NSCLC progression. However, little is known re garding the functions and mechanisms of circ_0017639 in NSCLC, which requires further extensive studies. The circ_0017639 expression in NSCLC tissues and cell lines was evaluated via qRT-RCR. Moreover, using ectopic plasmid incorporation and shRNA assays, we analyzed the...

Wenjing Xiao, Jianqun Wang, Xiaojing Wang, Shuang Cai, Yanhua Guo, Lin Ye, Dan Li, Anpei Hu, Shikai Jin, Boling Yuan, Yi Zhou, Qilan Li, Qiangsong Tong & Liduan Zheng
Macroautophagy/autophagy is a conserved cellular process associated with tumorigenesis and aggressiveness, while mechanisms regulating expression of autophagic machinery genes in cancers still remain elusive. Herein, we identified E2F4 (E2F transcription factor 4) as a novel transcriptional activator of cytoprotective autophagy crucial for zinc homeostasis in cancer cells. Gain- and loss-of-function studies showed that E2F4 promoted autophagy in a cell cycle-dependent manner, resulting in facilitated degradation of MT (metallothionein) proteins, elevated distribution of Zn2+ within autophagosomes,...

In this paper, we investigated the electro-optical properties of the dilute magnetic polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) prepared with the liquid crystal colloids containing low concentrations of γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles. The doped nanoparticles have hardly changed the morphology of PDLCs, but they have significantly changed the threshold voltage, saturation voltage, and contrast ratio of PDLCs. Such changes result from ionic adsorption in competition with the concentration of the nanoparticles. When the concentration of the nanoparticles was...

Aminoglycosides exhibit ototoxicity by damaging mitochondria, which in turn generate reactive oxygen species that induce hair cell death and subsequent hearing loss. It is well known that damaged mitochondria are degraded by mitophagy, an important mitochondrial quality control system that maintains mitochondrial homeostasis and ensures cell survival. However, it is unclear whether dysregulation of mitophagy contributes to aminoglycoside-induced hair cell injury. In the current study, we found that PINK1-PRKN-mediated mitophagy was impaired in neomycin-treated hair...

β2-microglobulin amyloidosis was first described in the 1980s as a protein deposition disease associated with long-term haemodialysis. More recently, two inherited forms resulting from separate point mutations in the β2-microglobulin gene have been identified. In this report, we detail a novel β2M variant, P32L, caused by a unique dinucleotide mutation that is linked to systemic hereditary β2-microglobulin amyloidosis. Three family members from a Portuguese kinship featured cardiomyopathy, requiring organ transplantation in one case, along with...
