In-situ co-remediation of PAHs contaminated agricultural soil using blood meal and celery: An agricultural greenhouse field study

Hao Wu, Hui Wang, Tony R. Walker, Xiaoxu Wang, Yinggang Wang & Lina Sun
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contaminated agricultural soil is widespread globally. To develop a cost-effective remediation technique to effectively degrade PAH contaminated agricultural soil without disturbing crop production, an in-situ co-remediation of PAH contaminated agricultural soil using blood meal and celery was assessed in an agricultural greenhouse. Results showed PAH dissipation rates increased significantly in agricultural soil when co-remediated by blood meal and celery. Planting celery and addition of 5 g•kg−1 blood meal removed 53.13% of...

Ecological quality assessment and monitoring using a time-series remote sensing-based ecological index (ts-RSEI)

Chao Sun, Jialin Li, Yongchao Liu, Luodan Cao, Jiahao Zheng, Zhenjie Yang, Junwei Ye & Yue Li
Ecological quality assessment is fundamental to revealing changes in ecological environments before the development of effective ecological conservation policies. The complex ecological environment can be assessed more reliably when multiple remote sensing indices are integrated, such as in the use of the prevalent Remote Sensing-based Ecological Index (RSEI). However, for effective ecological quality assessment, the requirement of acquisition time consistency for images has become an outstanding issue for broadening the application of the RSEI. In...

A novel hybrid strategy of drug coated balloon and stent for coronary bifurcation lesions

Hongbo Yang, Yanan Song, Jiatian Cao, Jing Chen, Feng Zhang, Zheyong Huang, Juying Qian & Junbo Ge
Background. Provisional side branch (SB) stenting strategy is the default approach for the majority of bifurcation lesions, but outcomes of SB is suboptimal. Though drug coated balloon (DCB) improving SB outcomes attracts an increasing attention, sequence of DCB hasn’t yet been determined. We presented a novel hybrid strategy of DCB and stent for bifurcation lesions. Methods. With lesion preparation, DCB was persistently inflated in SB kissing with main branch (MB) stent deployment and balloon post-dilation...

Functional Data Analysis and Extensions for Financial Data

Ting Wei
It’s worth noting that functional data analysis greatly enriches existing data analysis methods. It brings a broader perspective to investigate data structures. Thus, this thesis focuses on the field of functional data analysis and its extension methods. We begin by revisiting the fundamental methodologies of functional data analysis that support the overall concept of this thesis. After this explanatory stage, this thesis contributes three main parts. Part one concentrates on the application of the functional...

Identification and quantitative analysis of bioactive components from Potentilla kleiniana Wight et Arn with anti HIV-1 proteases activity

Yong Qiang Zhou, Su Mei Li, Xin Wei, Xin Yang, Jun Wei Xiao, Bo Wen Pan, Shou Xia Xie, Ying Zhou, Jian Yang & Ying Wei
Potentilla kleiniana Wight et Arn(PK, ‘Wu Pi Feng’ in Chinese) was recorded as Miao ethnic medicine for treatment of fever, cough, ulcer, and erysipelas for thousands years. This study aimed to evaluate the antiviral activity of four PK extracts and seven compounds by using HIV-1 protease (HIV-1 PR). In addition, Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography and High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-HRMS) was employed to identify the bioactive components. The toxicity assessment of the extracts was done...

Dipping Pattern and 1-year stroke functional outcome in ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack

Xia Ding, Yilun Zhou, Yuesong Pan, Jie Xu, Hongyi Yan, Xingquan Zhao, Yilong Wang & Yongjun Wang
This study aimed to explore whether a relationship exists between dipping patterns and 1-year functional outcome in patients with acute ischemic stroke (IS) or transient ischemic attack (TIA). Data from the Blood Pressure and Clinical Outcome in TIA or Ischemic Stroke Study (BOSS), a nationwide, hospital-based, longitudinal cohort study, was used for this study. Patients with acute IS or TIA were recruited within 7 days after onset and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring was performed during...

Chemical profile, anti-hepatoma activity, anti-acetylcholinesterase and antioxidant activity of aerial part of Aconitum carmichaeli Debx

Jiani Yu, Jie Xia, Jingxuan Xu, Shengliang Chen, Yan Zhang, Feng Yin, Jiahao Fang, Lietao Cai, Baohua Zhang, Yifei Zhan, Xiaodan Zhang, Zhongda Zeng & Zongsuo Liang
Five extracts of the aerial parts of Aconitum carmichaeli were obtained by different solvent extraction or macroporous adsorption resin purification: ethyl acetate layer extract (EAE), n-butanol layer extract (BuE), water layer extract (WE), extract eluted by 10% ethanol from macroporous resin (10), extract eluted by 80% ethanol from macroporous resin (80). Antioxidant activities of the five extracts were determined by ABTS, DPPH, FRAP assays, anti-AChE activities by modified Ellman’s method, in vitro anti-hepatoma activities by...

The role of the epigenetic modifier MLL1 in producing an effective and tailored B cell response to the pathogen-influenced microenvironment

Yan Zhang
Diseases caused by infections, such as helminth infections or viral infections, pose a major human health problem worldwide. In particular, one key reason why helminths cause long-term health and economic burdens is that there is currently no effective targeted vaccine for human use. B cell responses – resulting in the production of antibody – underpin most successful vaccine designs. This thesis uncovered MLL1 as a novel regulator of B cell responses to different pathogens, and...
