Jahrhundert

Hans-Christian Maner
The “long” 18th century, which historiography also calls the “great century” or the “century of happiness”, was neither “great” nor “happy” for a large part of the inhabitants of Transylvania. This thesis of an early modern historian is to be examined and substantiated. Using the example of some petitions from greek catholic clergy, the article examines strategies, processes and mechanisms of emotionalization. The focus is on the content of petitions from bishop Inochentie Micu-Klein and...

Multi-proxy, localised reconstructions of climate and weathering from cave speleothem samples

Christopher Day , Philip Pogge von Strandmann , Franziska Lechleitner & Heather Stoll
Speleothems (secondary calcium carbonate formations) offer significant potential for recording environmental processes above caves, an area increasingly referred to as the Critical Zone. Speleothems grow for hundreds to millions of years, with absolute chronology from U-Th and U-Pb chronometers. The solution properties of rainwater infiltrating the soil and underlying caves respond to environmental controls. These environmental signals can be preserved within speleothem carbonates. Recent efforts to calibrate, model and interpret this complex geochemistry has progressed...

Tanja Betz, Alexa Meyer-Hamme & Arne-Christoph Halle

Implications of Asymmetry Risk for Portfolio Analysis and Asset Pricing

Fousseni Chabi-Yo, Dietmar Leisen & Eric Renault
Asymmetric shocks are common in markets; securities' payoffs are not normally distributed and exhibit skewness. This paper studies the portfolio holdings of heterogeneous agents with preferences over mean, variance and skewness, and derives equilibrium prices. A three funds separation theorem holds, adding a skewness portfolio to the market portfolio; the pricing kernel depends linearly only on the market return and its squared value. Our analysis extends Harvey and Siddique's (2000) conditional mean-variance-skewness asset pricing model...

A new flavonol derivative and other compounds from the leaves of Bauhinia thonningii Schum with activity against multidrug-resistant bacteria

Guy Raphael Sado Nouemsi, Jean-Bosco Jouda, Peron Bosco Leutcha, Valaire Yemene Matieta, Virginie Flaure Tsague Tankeu, Jenifer Reine Ngnouzouba Kuete, İlhami Çelik, Victor Kuete, Norbert Sewald & Alain Meli Lannang
Investigation of the leaves of Bauhinia thonningii Schum led to the isolation and identification of a new flavonol derivative, 6-C-methylquercetin-3,4'-dimethyl ether (1) together with eleven known compounds (2–13), with two of them (10 and 11) obtained as a mixture. Their structures were established by extensive spectroscopic analyses. Antibacterial activity of compound 1 as well as the reference antibiotic, ciprofloxacin was tested on Gram-negative multidrug-resistant bacteria overexpressing active efflux pumps, and against methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus...

Advances in terrestrial and marine carbonate archives – novel proxies and innovative techniques to decipher past climate variability

Dana Felicitas Christine Riechelmann , Maximilian Hansen , Sophie Warken & Michael Weber
The use of carbonate-based paleoclimate archives has gained increasing importance to obtain reliable and detailed information on past climate and environmental variability in order to better understand the modern climate regime and the influence of anthropogenically induced global warming. In the last decades, the diversity of geochemical proxies available in carbonate palaeoclimate archives have emerged rapidly and significantly. Trace elements and traditional stable isotopes of oxygen and carbon have been supplemented with numerous non-traditional stable...
