Biotransformation of asiatic acid by Cunninghamella echinulata and Circinella muscae to discover anti-neuroinflammatory derivatives
Yanni Wu, Youjia Lu, Ying Yi, Andong Wang, Wenli Wang, Min Yang, Boyi Fan & Guangtong Chen
In this study, the biotransformation of asiatic acid by Cunninghamella echinulata CGMCC 3.970 and Circinella muscae CGMCC 3.2695 was investigated. Scaled-up biotransformation reactions yielded eight metabolites. Their structures were established based on extensive NMR and HR-ESI-MS data analyses and four of them are new compounds. C. echinulata could catalyze the regioselecitve hydroxylation, carbonylation and lactonization to yield five metabolites. C. muscae could selectively catalyze hydroxylation, acetylation and glycosylation to yield four products. Furthermore, all the...

Potentilla kleiniana Wight et Arn(PK, ‘Wu Pi Feng’ in Chinese) was recorded as Miao ethnic medicine for treatment of fever, cough, ulcer, and erysipelas for thousands years. This study aimed to evaluate the antiviral activity of four PK extracts and seven compounds by using HIV-1 protease (HIV-1 PR). In addition, Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography and High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-HRMS) was employed to identify the bioactive components. The toxicity assessment of the extracts was done...

Vortex and its implication on separation performance in an electro-swirling coupling device
Ye Peng, Bao Yu, Haohua Zhang, Yuan Fang, Xinxin Liang, Haifeng Gong & Yunqi Liu
An electro-swirling coupling device coupled with electric field and centrifugation can achieve demulsification and dewatering of emulsion efficiently and economically. But, the vortex structure and its implication on separation performance under the coupling condition are unclear. Accordingly, a vortex analysis for the coupling separator was conducted numerically, and the effect of eccentricity on the efficiency was investigated. The results show that the iso-vortex surface is twisted and fluctuates. And there is a vibrational radial deviation...

Design and synthesis of a new bioactive compound for marine antifouling inspired by natural products
Jiyong Zheng, Haiping Gao, Guanglong Zhang, Zhiyong Sun, Jinwei Zhang, Li Wang & Cunguo Lin
A marine antifouling compound, N-octyl-2-hydroxybenzamide (OHBA), inspired by ceramide and paeonol molecules, was created. First, methyl salicylate was synthesized with salicylic acid and methanol, followed by n-octylamine through an ester-amine condensation reaction. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry confirmed the characteristic structure of the OHBA compound. Bioassays showed that OHBA inhibits the growth of typical marine fouling organisms, such as Vibrio azureus, Navicula subminuscula, Ulva pertusa, Mytilus edulis, and Amphibalanus...

Pre-concentration of quartz from sea sand through superconducting high gradient magnetic separation technology
Yongkui Li, Suqin Li, Xiaodong Pan, Xin Zhao & Penghui Guo
In this study, a superconducting high gradient magnetic separation (S-HGMS) technology was used to separate and extract quartz from sea sand. Under optimal conditions (i.e., a magnetic flow ratio of 0.085 T·s/m, slurry flow velocity of 400 ml/min, and pulp concentration of 40 g/L), the SiO2 grade increased from 79.45% of the raw material to 91.35% of quartz concentrate, and the removal rate of Al and Fe reached 91.97% and 82.10%, respectively. Weakly magnetic particles...

Prevalence and significance of large granular lymphocytes in patients with immune thrombocytopenia
Caroline Gabe, Yang Liu, Joanne Duncan, Melanie St John, Kayla J. Lucier, David Kimmel, John G. Kelton & Donald M. Arnold
The association between T-cell large granular lymphocytes (T-LGL) and ITP is uncertain. The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of T-LGL in patients with ITP and to describe its association with ITP disease severity. We analyzed flow cytometry results for T-LGL (using a threshold of 0.3 x109 or greater cells/L) or positive T-cell receptor clonality in patients with ITP and nonimmune thrombocytopenia. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize the association between T-LGL...

Cooperativity and reactivity properties of medium-sized boron clusters: a combined density functional theory and information-theoretic approach study
Wenbiao Zhang, Yilin Zhao, Xiaoyan An, Jia Fu, Jingwen Zhang, Dongbo Zhao, Shubin Liu & Chunying Rong
In continuation of our previous work of small boron clusters [Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 23, 24118 (2021)], we systematically examined the neutral and negatively charged boron clusters Bn/Bn′ − (nε{8–38}) with planar or quasi-planar conformations, whose exotic properties have aroused considerable interest in the literature. We make use of two total energy partition schemes, conceptual density functional theory, and the information-theoretic approach to appreciate the cooperativity and reactivity properties. We found that neutral boron clusters...
