Interoperability Intersection: Partnerships in Open Science Infrastructure

Eric Olson
Enabling interoperability throughout the research lifecycle often aligns with or is a key component of the missions of open source tool providers. Even before the introduction of the FAIR framework, open source tools and infrastructure have emphasized opportunities to connect the systems and workflows that researchers rely on so that research communication can be faster, more efficient, and more secure. OSF, like many of our friends in the open science infrastructure space, is strengthened both...

Digestibility kinetics of polyhydroxyalkanoate and polybutylene succinate adipate after in vitro fermentation in rumen fluid

Hailey Galyon
The objective of this study was to determine polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) and copolymer ruminal degradability and kinetics. Commercial PHA, polybutylene succinate adipate (PBSA), PBSA:PHA copolymer blends, and forage controls were incubated in rumen fluid for up to 240 h. Mass loss was measured after each incubation time, and digestion kinetic parameters were estimated. Thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry analyses were conducted on incubated samples.

Association of soft drink and 100% fruit juice consumption with all-cause mortality, cardiovascular diseases mortality, and cancer mortality: A systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies

Bei Pan, Long Ge, Honghao Lai, Qi Wang, Qian Zhang, Min Yin, Sheng Li, Jinhui Tian, Kehu Yang & Jiancheng Wang
Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), artificially sweetened beverages (ASBs), and 100% fruit juices are frequently consumed and have been documented that they could lead to serious disease burden. However, inconsistent evidence on the association between SSBs, ASBs, and 100% fruit juices consumption and mortality have been presented. PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and PsycINFO were systematically searched. We conducted a random-effects meta-analysis and dose-response meta-analysis to assess the association and calculated...

Leveraging Open Ecosystems to Enhance Reproducible Workflows

Claire Riss, Eric Olson, Nicole Pfeiffer, Aaron Wolen, Lenny Teytelman & Steffen Bollmann
Open source infrastructure has paved the way for mission-aligned research stakeholders to create a united vision of interoperable tools and services that accelerate scholarly communication, fill technology gaps, converge solutions, and enable access and discoverability. Hear from a panel of research groups that have taken advantage of interoperable infrastructure to leverage more robust workflows to support rigorous, reproducible research. We also discuss the steps stakeholders and institutions can take to integrate OSF’s open API with...

Cessation of collisional tectonism and rapid crustal uplift recorded by 430–420 Ma igneous rocks in the South Kunlun belt, northwest China

Jing Chen, Bing-Zhang Wang, Fu-Cheng Yu, Jie Han & Wu-Fu Li
The Wanbaogou granitic plutons are exposed along with coeval volcanic rocks, and provide an opportunity to investigate Silurian tectonism in the South Kunlun belt, northwest China. This study presents new whole-rock geochemical, and zircon U–Pb geochronological and Lu–Hf isotope data for Silurian intrusive rocks of the Wanbaogou area. We analysed four samples: a porphyritic monzogranite and dioritic dike from the Wanbaogou pluton and a granodiorite and monzogranite from the Wudaogou pluton. Zircon U–Pb dating yielded...

An energy use, energy production, and building air leakage dataset for a zero energy commercial building

Philip Agee & Leila Nikdel
This is an open dataset of measured energy use, solar energy production, and building air leakage data from a 328 m2 (3,531 ft2) all-electric, zero energy commercial building in Virginia, USA. Over two years of energy use data were collected at 1-hour intervals using circuit-level energy monitors. Over six years of solar energy production data were measured at 1-hour intervals by 56 microinverters. The building air leakage data was measured post-construction per ASTM-E779 Standard Test...

A Systematic Literature Review of Assessment Practices in Engineering Education: Past, Present, and Future

Johnny Woods, Homero Murzi, David Kniola, Isil Anakok & Andrew Katz
Assessment practices in the STEM fields remain grounded in historical approaches such as tests, research papers, and projects. One overlooked barrier to student success is assessment, where inequity disproportionately negatively affects diverse students. It is well documented that inequities in the classroom impact academic engagement, retention and degree completion rates, and learning outcomes. So while pedagogical approaches have evolved to promote equity in the learning process, the strategies and methods used to evaluate students have...
