Mariam K. Maducolil, Sawsan Al-Obaidly, Tawa Olukade, Husam Salama, Mai AlQubaisi & Hilal Al Rifai
Background We aimed to study the maternal characteristics and obstetric and neonatal outcomes in pregnant mothers with chronic hypertension (CHTN) compared to non-CHTN. Methods The study was a population-based cohort study, and a PEARL-Peristat Study (PPS) for the year of 2017. There were 20,210 total births including 19,762 singleton and 448 multiple births. We excluded multiple gestations from the analysis as they differ in fetal growth, duration of gestation and have a higher rate of...

Genetic polymorphisms associated with obesity in the Arab world: a systematic review

Salma Younes, Amal Ibrahim, Rana Al-Jurf & Hatem Zayed
Background Obesity, one of the most common chronic health conditions worldwide, is a multifactorial disease caused by complex genetic and environmental interactions. Several association studies have revealed a considerable number of candidate loci for obesity; however, the genotype–phenotype correlations remain unclear. To date, no comprehensive systematic review has been conducted to investigate the genetic risk factors for obesity among Arabs. Objectives This study aimed to systematically review the genetic polymorphisms that are significantly associated with...

Klebsiella pneumoniae (81, 54.4%) and Escherichia coli (38, 25.5%) were the most common species. Genes encoding metallo-β-lactamases were detected in 68 (45.8%) isolates, and OXA-48-like enzymes in 60 (40.3%). blaNDM-1 (45; 30.2%) and blaOXA-48 (29; 19.5%) were the most frequent. KPC-encoding genes were identified in 5 (3.6%) isolates. Most common...

Eman Alhmoud, Osama Abdelsamad, Ezeldin Soaly, Rasha El Enany & Hazem Elewa
Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a pandemic affecting many countries worldwide. Given the increasing incidence especially in elderly and individuals with comorbid conditions, it is advised by health authorities to stay home if possible, maintain social distancing and stay away from those who are sick or could be infected. Patients with comorbidities especially cardiovascular disease are at higher risk of getting infected with COVID-19 and have worse prognosis. Among efforts to safely manage warfarin patients...

Ayman Al-Dahshan & Vahe Kehyayan
Potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) often lead to sub-optimal or poor health outcomes in older adults. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and predictors of PIM prescription among older adults in Qatar. This was a cross-sectional, retrospective study using data from the electronic medical records of Qatari patients (age ≥ 65 years) attending the 23 primary healthcare (PHC) centers in Qatar from April 1, 2017 to September 30, 2017. PIMs were identified...

Onasemnogene abeparvovec (Zolgensma®) is a novel gene therapy medicine, FDA-approved in May 2019 for the treatment of SMA. This study aimed to describe Qatari experience with onasemnogene abeparvovec by reviewing the clinical outcomes of 9 SMA children (7 SMA type 1 and 2 with SMA type 2) aged 4‒23 months treated between November 2019 and July 2020....

Quality of diabetes care in patients with schizophrenia: a case-control study in Qatar

Mustafa Abdul Karim, Nadeen Al-Baz, Sami Ouanes, Ali Khalil, Ahmed H. Assar, Abdulkarim Alsiddiqi, Zeinab Dabbous, Mahmoud Zirie, Peter Woodruff, Rayaz A. Malik & Peter M. Haddad
Background Patients with schizophrenia are at least twice as likely to develop diabetes mellitus compared to the general population. This is of significance in Qatar given the high prevalence of obesity and diabetes. Furthermore, the lifespan of people with schizophrenia is shortened by approximately 15 years, partly due to long-term microvascular and macrovascular complications. High quality diabetes care can significantly reduce morbidity and mortality. We assessed the level of diabetes care delivered to patients in...
